25.01.2022 Do you live with a tween, teen or young adult who is struggling? This life stage can be a challenging time that involves raging hormones, identity confusion, social pressures, and relationship issues. This can be worsened by grief and loss, academic expectations, childhood trauma, anxiety, addictions and life changes. Counselling allows young people to discover their strengths and passions, safely explore their identity, consider their future goals, increase their self-estee...m and overcome or manage trauma, grief, stress, addictions, fears and life changes. Counselling can help identify which hormones are having the biggest impact and how to compensate. A young person living with large doses of adrenaline may be restless, distracted, hyped up, chatty, demanding and display increased conflict (Fuller, 2014). Those experiencing high levels of cortisol may struggle to express thoughts, be a worrier, experience tummy aches or somatic symptoms, be defensive, negative and/or upset easily (Fuller). A young person with low levels of dopamine may struggle to focus, experience tiredness, low motivation, low energy levels, lack pride and display low flexibility (Fuller). A young person with low levels of serotonin may be moody, sad or depressed, struggle to get going in the morning, be uncommunicative, difficult to please and unrespondant to praise (Fuller). If you live with a young person and need some help, or if you are a young person who is struggling, consider booking a counselling appointment. Active Counselling Services uses the young person’s interests to engage the young person and facilitate the counselling process. Sessions for children, teenagers and students cost $80, adults cost $90. For more information contact Laura on 0424 08 4443 www.activecounsellingservices.com.au References Fuller, A. (2014). 17.01.2022 How are your relationships travelling? Today I have been considering how to make good relationships great! One of the most precious gifts we can give someone is our time. To really make the most of that time, I recommend taking a genuine and active interest in the person’s passions. Bob Goff said in his book ‘Everybody Always’, There’s a big difference between knowing what someone’s doing and being with them while they do it. We don’t necessarily have to share a love for th...eir passion, the gift is watching their face, seeing their delight and knowing that you get to truly understand what makes them happy. I often marvel at the connections people have within sports team and I think the fact that they get to live and breathe the other’s passion and feel each other’s successes and losses is incredibly bonding. Try some of the tips below to bring your relationships closer. Know and understand the passions and interests of your partner, friends, family and children. Spend time actively involving yourself in these passions. Ask your loved ones about their passions and listen actively to their response. Invite others to know and experience your interests. Pick up the phone, drop in or plan catch ups to ensure deeper connections. Love is a verb and so often the little acts mean the most, show up for your loved ones and stick to your word. Don’t be afraid of being silly together, so often the silliness is the best bit. Gain time by actively reducing things that take time away from your relationships e.g. technology, phone, overtime, gaming, tv. Be vulnerable in regards to your emotions, vulnerability adds depth and provides the opportunity for understanding and empathy. Choose to see the best in the people that surround you. Encourage those you love to do what they love. If you feel like you or the person you are wanting to build a relationship with, does not have a passion in their life, it is the perfect opportunity to try new things! Passion can be found in many many places. E.g. creativity, sport, learning, environment, animals, adventure, travel, reading, water activities, play, decorating and so much more! If you need help finding your passion or putting quality experiences into your relationship, consider booking a counselling appointment with Laura on 0424 08 4443. P.S. If you have engaged in an activity with someone where you saw their purest form of joy, pop it below as it might inspire someone else. For example, today I squealed and laughed out loud while jumping on the trampoline with my nephew!

15.01.2022 I like buts and I cannot lie! Has life thrown you some curve balls lately and left you feeling in a negative place? Today I am going to teach you a technique called the But Technique. It is a very simple technique to help you see the positives in an experience. It allows you to express any feeling you feel at any given moment with the addition of a but at the end of the sentence. For example, I had a terrible day at work, but I had a lovely lunch with my co-worker. Adding a b...ut statement to the end of the sentence allows you to find hope or gratitude in that situation. It can also help you find understanding and empathy for someone and grow resilience within you. Here a few more examples. Try it yourself! My partner is working late again, but I appreciate that we will have the money to take a holiday soon. I feel sad that my friend has not been returning my calls, but I know her marriage is struggling and chose to show her grace. My teenage daughter is moody all the time, but I know her brain and body are changing at an alarming rate causing all sorts of symptoms. My neighbour’s party kept me awake last night, but I enjoyed hearing them laughing and singing. I feel frustrated that my dog chewed up his bed again, but how I love to cuddle him. That customer was so rude to me, but I wonder if she is struggling emotionally as she looked close to tears.. I will pray for her. The weather is terrible, our outing must be postponed, but we could plan a fun indoor games day instead. My best friend is sick, but I will be there for her no matter what. I didn’t get the job. I feel so disappointed, but the interview was great practice and I will not give up. If you need help seeing the positives in an experience, consider booking a counselling appointment with Laura on 0424 08 4443.

05.01.2022 Ward off the winter blues by booking an active counselling session. Active Counselling Services Half Price Winter Special: Buy 5 sessions for $250! Active thera...py involves talking while engaging in a physical activity. Active therapy allows the release of feel good chemicals in the brain and burns up cortisol which is often in abundance when stressed. The most common form of active therapy offered by Active Counselling Services is counselling while walking. Walking can reduce the symptoms of depression. The University of Wisconsin study found that exercise appeared to be as effective as psycho-therapy at relieving moderate depression thus combining walking and therapy suggests twofold benefits. Some clients find it easier to tackle tough topics while walking and often respond more openly when there is less direct eye contact. Additionally, when you're walking at your own pace, your cognitive performance improves - more specifically your working memory is better than it is when you're sitting still (Augustin, 2010). The benefits don’t stop there. Walking outside allows the body to absorb Vitamin D. Vitamin D allows calcium to build strong bones and helps regulate the immune system and the neuromuscular system. A walk outside can promote better sleep by improving circadian rhythms. A study by two scientists from the University College London discovered over the course of an 11.3 year study that walking reduced the risk of cardiovascular events by 31%, and it lowered the risk of dying throughout the study period by 32%. Walking also promotes stronger muscles and increased fitness. A walking counselling session enables a sense of accomplishment and allows walkers to notice, enjoy and be present to the ‘bigger’ world around them. At Active Counselling Services you will walk at a pace you are comfortable with. Many tree lined streets are in walking distance of the practice and walks will be on footpaths and quiet streets as close to nature as possible. You will need to wear comfy clothes and shoes and bring a bottle of water. Should you have any health concerns, please contact your General Practitioner and ensure your ability to walk for 50 mins at a pace you are comfortable with. Let’s get walking! 04.01.2022 DOES WORRY OR FEAR STOP YOU ENJOYING LIFE? Constant worry can be incredibly debilitating, often distancing you from friends and life experiences. Physical symptoms, like panic attacks, chest tightness, shortness of breath, stomach aches, restlessness, hot and cold flushes, dizziness, headaches, weakness in the legs and sleep problems can play havoc with your body. When anxious you may experience catastrophic or obsessive thoughts, feel frightened, on edge or overwhelmed and f...ocus on the worst case scenario. To others you may appear ‘in your head’ and not present within the moment. When feeling anxious you may avoid situations or turn to alcohol, chocolate, coffee etc to increase confidence. This can worsen symptoms or trigger panic attacks and in some cases have a depressant effect. The good news is that there is help available and you can learn to control or minimize anxiety. Active Counselling Services offers counselling to children, teenagers and adults. Counselling will assist the person to notice and understand physical symptoms, be aware of thoughts that increase anxiety and foster healthy thoughts, teach breathing and relaxation techniques, practice being present in the world, foster problem solving skills and letting go of the unsolvable. Counselling will consider and address underlying causes of anxiety, challenge fears, develop healthy coping strategies, improve self-care and help rediscover interests and previously enjoyed activities. For those who experience social anxiety, social skills will be taught and practiced, confidence will be addressed and the client will be encouraged to reengage back into life through a process of small manageable steps. For more information or to book a counselling session, contact Laura on 0424 08 4443. www.activecounsellingservices.com.au P.S. Your anxiety will probably tell you that you can’t make an appointment or that there is no hope for you. It may even tell you that leaving the house to talk to someone would be far too difficult. I am trained to make you feel calm and safe. Stand up to your anxiety and show anxiety who’s boss! Don’t let anxiety control your life!
