23.01.2022 Nothing much changed for me when COVID hit (except Clint was working from home so I couldn't get my office work done when I wanted to ) I always worked a lot from home. Some of my sessions became virtual but that was it. Working from home is great but I do find that I will respond to emails at 8pm when I really should just leave it until the next day! ... So that is one of my goals moving forward. I want to set clearer working hours for myself & minimise sending emails/working of these hours. 22.01.2022 Go me! I'm amazing! Seriously, I struggle with quite a few "invisible illnesses" that make it hard for me to exercise & have energy. Yet here I am, riding up Mount Gravatt, dripping with sweat, my face matching my jersey, having ridden for 20 minutes at 190bpm up a mountain! Don't get me wrong, I "failed" a little this first ride, having to stop because my heart rate was so bloomin' high! I didn't feel as good about myself as I should have (I should have... been as positive as I was in the first paragraph!) but check out the next pic!!! I did it again a few days later & made it to the top without stopping, over 3 minutes quicker! WHOOP - HERES TO NOT GIVING UP! It is not natural for me to talk about myself positively. 22.01.2022 Just a quick throwback to February 2018... Before Hypothyroidism, before my Rib injury. I want you to APPRECIATE YOUR BODY! I remember my attitude towards my body at this point. I tried SO HARD to love my body, be positive about it & most of the time, I managed. Not going to lie, I still struggle with the same issues around body positivity. ... Looking back on this image, my body looks amazing, just as it does now! My body now has more fat and less energy but it does AMAZING for the health conditions it faces. I wish I appreciated my body more when I had fewer health issues. You should stop and think about all the amazing things your body can do. Can you run? Get up and walk to the fridge? Lift weights? Cycle? Do Pilates? Go for a walk? Guess what - so many people CANNOT do these "simple" things we take for granted! Point being - APPRECIATE WHAT YOUR BODY CAN DO AND DON'T WASTE IT! 21.01.2022 I have been so thankful for online HIIT, Pilates & Barre classes recently. I have been coming off of my thyroid medication (with guidance from my Doctor) and some mornings, I just need the extra sleep. All in all, so far it's been a good experience but on those mornings, I'm so glad I am able to get my @premiumpilatesandfitness workout in online. I can do it when I need & pick a workout duration that suits me that day! ... Also, Pilates for me does miracles for lower back/hip pain! 19.01.2022 Those of you who know me personally & professionally will know I am super open about my own personal mental health to endeavor to remove any stigma around it. I also like to be a safe place for friends, family & clients to be able to open up about their own issues. I personally have an anxiety disorder. I've battled with anxiety for as long as I can remember and have tried many different treatments including therapy, natural remedies, and anti-depress...ants. A few years ago, I was at my worst point. I would have panic attacks a few times a week, I would have depressive days where I was just so sad, I couldn't make any decisions (literally, I couldn't make the decision as to what musli bars to buy). My anxiety had become completely debilitating. With the support of my friends, family, and my more than amazing husband, Clint, I went back to my doctor to request going on medication again. The medication I am on now, to say it's a lifesaver, would be an understatement! I've been on a few different types and this one is by far the best. Now, why am I sharing this? A lot of people are becoming more comfortable with mental health & therapy etc... but there is still a lot of stigma around medication. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it should be your first option, but if you've tried other things such as improved diet, exercise, and help from a qualified psychologist, don't feel like you're failing by going on medication. Some mental health disorders are literally a chemical imbalance in your brain. That is not your fault. You have no control over what chemicals your brain produces. If you feel better on medication, don't feel ashamed about taking medication. Would you feel bad about taking medication for your heart? Or painkillers for your broken leg? No, you wouldn't. It takes time to load in all your recipes & foods that you eat but after a few weeks, it only takes a few minutes a day to log your calories. The app I use and recommend is My Fitness Pal. It’s the easiest by far and it’s free! You need to track every single thing that goes into your mouth! If you’re not tracking accurately you have no idea if you’ve gotten yo...urself into a calorie deficit or not. This is when you often hear people say I’m in a calorie deficit but I’m not losing weight. 14.01.2022 Why do other diets work? All diets or programs such as Keto, Atkins, Paleo, Vegan, Intermittent fasting, Shakes, Macro counting, will work if you’re in a calorie deficit. That’s what it comes down to burn more than you eat. Often our body can have a knee jerk reaction when you change up your diet drastically. For example, before I became a trainer I tried a lot of different diets / exercise programs to try and lose weight. ... One of the diets I tried was Keto. When I started I lost 5kg, it then all came back on without me changing anything. Why? I remember when I first started on my fitness journey I would have been lucky to drink one litre of water each day. Now, I average about 3L of water per day. To start with, I recommend working on building the habit of drinking 2 litres of water every day. This 2L is your core amount. Any water you drink while exercising is on top of your core 2 litres. 12.01.2022 2 Unfortunately, a lot of people view a fasting diet in an unbalanced way. They believe that as long as they fast for X amount of time (google all the intermittent fasting options there are a million & are all called different things: example the 5:2 diet) they can eat whatever they like. It just doesn’t work like this. If you eat 2500 calories per day normally and then still eat 2500 calories during your eating time, you’re not going to lose weight. Intermittent fast...ing is not a great solution for everyone. It really depends on you, your body & your health so make sure you see a doctor before you begin a fasting diet. So, how do I use intermittent fasting? I personally use it as a tool. If I am wanting to drop body fat I will skip breakfast therefore fasting & only have coffee. This way, I have more calories I can consume over lunch & dinner. I also use it if I know I am going to have a really big dinner somewhere, I’ll eat less during the day so I can have a big dinner. I am not a strict intermittent faster but we can all use different methods to make our lives easier even if you’re not strictly sticking to the guidelines of a specific diet. At the end of the day, you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight. If using intermittent fasting helps you to be in that deficit awesome! If it makes you cranky and annoyed all day maybe not the best option for you. The pressure to be skinner, fatter, be more toned, be less muscley, have a flatter tummy, have smaller arms, have straighter hair, have less frizzy hair, have clearer skin... the list could go on but let's not bring up every negative thought I've had about my body! 07.01.2022 I had the best positive speech win the other day! A client who I have been training for a few months would frequently feel like she couldn't do an exercise, vocalizing this by saying "I don't think I can do it". She always could and was never whiney but she felt that she couldn't. Last week, her speech changed. It was towards the end of our workout, she was getting tired, but instead of saying "I can't do it", she said, "I got this." We had a little c...elebration at that moment! This is what is really happening. You aren't making working out a priority so you won't find time for it. Now, don't get me wrong. I KNOW you're busy. I'm not discounting that at all! Some days, it may just be all too much. BUT, that doesn't mean that its no...t possible for you to workout at all. I train some exceptionally busy people, but they've made working out a priortity so are able to fit it into their schedule. Here are some tips for helping to make exercise a priority: Schedule your workouts in your calendar. Don't limit yourself to one form of exercise. You may do 10 minutes of skipping one day and an hour workout the next. It's all awesome! Include your kids &/ animals in your workouts! Get yourself a buddy or a PT that you are accountable to! Building muscle increases your RMR, so the more muscle you have the higher your RMR is. The higher your RMR is, the more you need to eat to maintain your body so you can eat more!
