14.01.2022 This week is National Farm Safety week and what an important week it is. Ultimately keeping farmers safe is a huge part of what Active Farmers are trying to ac...hieve. One story really stands out to me as a perfect example. I was chatting to an Active Farmer who had made the trek across from WA to attend our Active Farmers Games in Temora in 2020. He was explaining that a few weeks prior he was on the back of the ute and tripped on something, causing him to stumble backwards. In his mind he was thinking 'I'm going to fall here and it's not going to be good'. To his surprise he was able to spring off the back and land on his feet! Over the years I have heard time after time that farmers are already active enough on farm and they don't need to do more physical activity. Yes farmers are able to stay on their feet all day and lift heavy things, but by going to a regular exercise class core strength is improved, muscular strength is built, as well as cardiovascular strength. This is the best way to avoid injury, pain, long term health problems and reduced efficiency on farm. How many farmers do you know that have a bad back from lifting things??? In addition to the physical benefits come the mental health benefits. Mental fitness, termed by the legendary Gus Worland from Gotcha4Life is also vital for farm safety. We know that regular exercise has a major impact on strengthening mental health, especially when you attend an exercise class with your mates! We know that there will be another drought, flood, fire = undoubtably more tough times ahead, and this is when we really need mental fitness. Decisions on farm, especially when its tough are so important - so who doesn't want better mental clarity gained when physically and mentally fit? There are many things farmers can be doing to stay safe on farm, but from our Active Farmers perspective attending an Active Farmers class (or any exercise class!!!) once or twice per week can have a huge impact on the safety of farmers on farm, driven by improved physical and mental fitness. Investing an hour or two each week is not going to make the farm business fail - rather the complete opposite! Next week we will be announcing all the details about exciting 6 week challenge, kicking off 16th August. If you need some motivation to get to Active Farmers and keep yourself safer on farm this is the perfect opportunity!!! Stay safe and tag someone you know should be coming to Active Farmers!
