20.01.2022 ANXIOUS SOCCER TRIALS? Soccer trials are anxious times for many parents and players. I recently did a presentation about perspective in youth sport for a tennis organization in UK. I thought it was a good opportunity to share some points from this presentation. ... It is likely that many parents and players believe they need to play in a good JPL team/club to develop. Otherwise, they may not make it Well, if this is true we should see an abundance of exceptional players all around Australia. We should have heard many great stories of professional contracts being signed. But the facts are, 60% drop out before they even finish high school and no more than 1 in a 1000 play A-league or above. Let’s put those stats in perspective. If they live to 80 years of age, youth sport is 1/6 of your child’s life. Based on these stats, what is the most important goal for 2022 season? WHAT IS SUCCESS? Only you and your child can work that out. Which points aligns best with your thinking? -Winning. -Play at the highest level. -Develop skills. -Enjoyment. -Develop great friendships. -Learn to be a great team mate. -Long term enjoyment. -Develop empathy and other useful life skills. -please add to the list. Based on your perspective, is playing JPL still important? WHO WANTS IT MOST? Anyone who continue playing soccer (professional or amateur) have developed an intrinsic motivation for the sport. Enjoyment, friendship and competence are key components of intrinsic motivation. I am sorry to say that enthusiastic and proud parenting does not lead to long term success without above and much more. Supportive parents are great, but it is still up to your child to enjoy the sport. Please share your opinion on this by contributing with comments below. If you like to discuss your experience in private, feel free to dm me directly.
19.01.2022 This is what I am working on. Mark Upton, My fastest mile, is instrumental in guiding my efforts to provide an authentic understanding of youth sport in its current form. No fluff, no hidden agenda, real people, real stories. I believe this can help us reduce the dropout rate. My question is, who is with me?

08.01.2022 According to AusPlay 2019 study, over 10,000 left soccer in SA between ages 12-14 & 15-17. I am doing a community research project and ask any parent with a child who quit soccer to dm me direct. I’m interested in the reason for quitting the sport. If it it was because it stopped being fun, I like to understand the reason why it stopped being fun. Names of parents, kids, clubs and coaches will remain confidential.

01.01.2022 This is brilliant for all growing families. Well done
01.01.2022 Futsal SA finals time. A stressful time for many parents and some coaches. Generally, it is the adults who put a lot of pressure on kids to perform. There is no need for that, they actually play better if they just enjoy the game. They will do their best anyway. So enjoy watching them play and don’t analyse.
