25.01.2022 New feature: 'Heroes of Active Living Longer' - Faye Le Poidevin Faye has been an ALLong member for 20 months and is a regular attendee at our Bathurst Clinics at CSU. Faye says this about what she has achieved from being a member - "We enjoy hiking in different parts of Australia and until I started this program I always used a hiking stick because I was unsure of my balance. I now have so much confidence with my balance and walking generally that I no longer need a stick. With more attention to what I eat I've also lost 12 kgs since joining. The best part is that coming to clinics give me a sense of purpose in starting the day, and that gives me more energy through the day". Well done Faye! #csugym #activelivinglonger #exercisebathurst #activelifestyle #exerciseright #heartfoundation

18.01.2022 Health: It's all about you. Edition #8, 2020: Harvard Medical School - Improve Your Balance...Strengthen Your Back...Increase Flexibility, and more! The following words are extracts from a book published by Harvard Health Publishing, and they are reflective of the theme underscored by our own Active Living Longer program, emphasising that long term maintenance of your physical self is a lot more than just strength building: Exercising your core muscles isn’t about chiseling ...out a set of six-pack abs (although they can get you a flat belly if that’s what you’re after), it’s about improving your flexibility and stability and making it easier to do everything from swinging a golf club or tennis racket to reaching for groceries on the top shelf. Because these moves help improve your balance and stability and reduce your risk of falling, they are also critical to helping you keep your independence. A strong core can even help make sitting easier! Believe it or not, sitting at a desk, working at your computer, or making phone calls all day can lead to back pain and stiffness unless you have a strong core. Which workout should you start with? If you think you have balance issues, you may want to try a floor core workout. This workout allows you to practice essential core moves like bridges and planks while lying down on a stable surface. There is no special equipment, but you may want to use a mat for comfort. Make sure you check with your doctor to ensure it is okay and then try these two moves. As you do the exercises, focus on proper form. If you find either of them difficult, do fewer reps, or follow the tips to make an exercise easier or more difficult. Attached find two basic core strengthening exercises. If you are confident, you can try these at home, or talk to one of the Active Living Longer team members on-line or when you next visit our CSU Bathurst Clinic sessions. 06.01.2022 "Health - It's All About You" - Edition #20, 2020 - Exercise for Older Adults. A simple tool that can encourage healthy ageing is movement and exercise, and age should not be see...n as a barrier for anyone to participate. From increased independence, improved mental health and the prevention of falls, movement allows ageing Australians to maintain their daily living activities whether it be lifting the groceries or playing with their grandkids. This eBook then also highlights how the common conditions and illnesses that older adults live with can be treated or prevented through expertly prescribed exercise programs. 02.01.2022 "Health - It's All About You" - Edition #19, 2020 - Strength training can help protect the brain from degeneration...... Research coordinated by The University of Sydney has found that just six months of strength training can help protect brain areas especially vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease up to one year later. Mild cognitive impairment involves a decline in memory and other thinking skills despite generally intact daily living skills. Targeted exercise actually slowed t...he natural shrinkage of the critical hippocampal of the brain in older people. "As much as 30% of all late-life dementia could be associated with preventable lifestyle factors." Their conclusion? Given this (exercise) was also linked to protection from cognitive decline, the message is clear - resistance exercise needs to become a standard part of dementia risk-reduction strategies." 02.01.2022 "Health - It's All About You" - Edition #6, 2020: Strength building exercises strengthen your Nervous system too This article from Newcastle University (UK) explains that even if you are just starting out with doing some muscle strengthening exercises your nervous system is getting immediate benefits. Professor Baker explains: It is known that when people start working out at the gym, they initially get stronger by increasing connections in the nervous system, not by growin...g bigger muscles, but the details of which pathways (in the central nervous system) change wasn’t clear. This is important, since we’ve shown in the past that this (central nervous system) pathway also helps people recover after a stroke. Improving the function of a hand rendered weak by a stroke might be using the same mechanisms as strength training in a healthy young body builder. 01.01.2022 Last chance to book! Extract from CSU press release, 8 October: Put on your 'dancing' shoes! (Actually any shoes will be just fine).... A new Zumba dance-exercise class is being trialled at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst on Wednesday evening 14 October and you are invited! Come alone or bring a partner or friend. Dr Eevon Stott, CEO of CSU based Active Living Longer (ALLong), said, Music is a must for some people during exercise and there is research showing that music can provide motivation, increase efficiency of movement, and in general, make exercise more enjoyable." But it is not easy to plan a music set, so I asked Sue Newstead (pictured), a Zumba dance-exercise leader I met at the PCYC in Bathurst, for help. Sue is very experienced and leads her classes with moves that are safe and fun". Sue and I share the objectives of getting people returning to exercising together with proper safety practices, and for this experience, Sue has planned a 45-minute set for beginners, she said. This event provides a Zumba ‘sampler’ experience to the Bathurst community, with Charles Sturt as our generous venue sponsor. The trial Zumba session starts 5.15pm on Wednesday 14 October at the Charles Sturt University gymnasium (building 1220) in Bathurst. The cost is only $8.00.
