25.01.2022 #countdowntogoodbye - Final 3 weeks of Active Mama Fitness Classes at Miles Park. . Many of you will remember the view in this photo - the backdrop of our #activemamavirtualworkout during the WA COVID-19 Lockdown. During a time when many were locked out of their gyms and everyone had to stay home, Active Mamas kept on moving with help of ZOOM and we exited lockdown without losing our fitness and mental health. . This pandemic while stressful and difficult on so many levels,... allowed me to create a new way of delivering exercise to busy, time-poor and sometimes overwhelmed mums that are unable to attend classes due to factors outside of their control (ie sick kids). . Over the years while I was operating, the long standing issue during the cold winter months is a drop in regular attendance during to colds and flus. And given our mums and children mingle during the classes, many mums had to forgo their attendance to keep the rest of the kids and mums safe from germs. But with the introduction of our ZOOM Virtual Workouts, the problem was resolved and Mums could get their weekly exercise done from home and still get the guidance and motivation they would get in a face-to-face class. This new service model has got to be one of the highlights of my business. . My ultimate mission was always to create different opportunities to help mums achieve the recommendations of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week and this model of face-to-face+virtual online classes has definitely allow more mums to engage in more exercise per week. For me this one a big win because the circumstances encourage clients to embrace this set up. . Three more weeks to go, my emotions are all over the place but I am continue to give you my best until the end. See more

17.01.2022 Basking in the forest while the kids play. Finding moments for me in motherhood. We don’t have the luxury of being physically alone most of the time but we can find pockets of time to be in a moment of peace within ourselves while the kids are safely being busy. Finding mini breaks throughout the day is how I manage stress daily and keep my overall stress levels down at a healthy level. How are your stress levels lately, mama? And how do you manage it?

16.01.2022 Mobility is the ability to move freely and easily. At our Active Mama classes, we always warm up with some mobility moves to get the body ready for exercise. Mums often hold certain positions for long periods of time which leads to tightness in the upper back, shoulders and neck. That’s why there is some focus on exercises that promote mobility in areas that feel stuck for mums. ... Chew slowly, taste your drinks, eat to a point of satisfaction, not fullness. There is a difference between the two. Just because it is in front of you, does not mean you have to eat it. If you do, that’s perhaps something you need to work on, mumma. ... #eatwell #livewell #noguilteating

15.01.2022 Extensive evidence now supports the safety and benefits of prenatal physical activity to support the health and wellness of pregnant women. Therefore, it is cri...tical that women and exercise professionals shift their individual and collective perspective of prenatal physical activity away from the potential risks of exercise, and instead realize that an effective exercise prescription can improve health, with subsequent benefits to many other dimensions of wellness. 12.01.2022 If you are feeling angry, anxious, frustrated and worried by the current situation, utilise the 60 mins daily exercise allowance to help boost your mood and manage your mental health. . What this fact from the review article by Basso & Suzuki (2017) means is that even if you had never really exercised previously, doing just one session of physical activity such as walking, biking or jogging can improved your current state of mental health for up to 2 hours after. . If the s...moke from the bush fires affect you, you can also exercise indoors. Some ideas include doing some steps on a block or stairs at home, put on a free yoga or exercise video from YouTube. Or just put on some music and dance with your kids. . Finally, it comes done to you and how you make use of movement and exercise to support yourself during this time. . 09.01.2022 I follow @bec_sparrow on FB and she shared this and I just just love this message and it applies for mothers as well. So often when our role in life changes, there is this struggle that is not often spoken about. We are pulled in the direction of our old self as well as in the direction of the new. What is our new worth as a mother who stays with the kids 24/7, or as a mother that works? At every life stage, we need to find our tribe of people who know our worth. There is no ...need for anger or resentment for the lack of acceptance where you go. When I was doing my PhD with a baby in toil, it was truly a hard time for me and I often felt like the odd one out. But hard times make us grow and it makes me see what mothers need during a time of transition. Everyone is at a different stage in life, make different amount of money, has different vibes. We just have to make a plan and find the place that sees our new worth.

08.01.2022 Good for your internal dialogue too

08.01.2022 Tag a new mum who needs to see and read this! I was walking through Belmont as I was doing my grocery shopping passing a couple of mothers with infants in their arms as they shopped. That reminded me it was time to do one of this post again. The infamous wrist drop on the left that new mother adopt with new babies that do not have neck control yet. ... We love our babies, we hold them a lot. One little adjustment on how we hold their necks can reduce your risk of wrist pain postpartum. Imagine your postpartum wrist in the left position in many hours of day, topped with the upward flicking of your wrist when you are picking up your babies - it’s a RSI waiting to happen. So mummas, open up your hand and straighten up your wrist when supporting baby’s neck x @ tag a new mum who needs to hear this!

08.01.2022 This is the last time I will be posting the message to set your exercise intentions for the week. It’s the last week of Active Mama Fitness Classes at Miles Park. I hope to see you for one final week

08.01.2022 On Sunday we had to act quickly to implement lockdown restrictions and stop the potential spread of COVID-19. The rules are complex - but we're committed to mak...ing sure they are workable and that they make sense. One frequent issue raised yesterday involved the rules around exercise for people with young children. This morning I can confirm that this direction has now been changed. Under the updated rule, a maximum of two adults from the same household and their children may exercise in their neighbourhood - up to a total of five people. That means that one adult may exercise with up to four children who are members of the same household, or two adults who are members of the same household may exercise with up to three children who are also members of that same household. Exercise is permitted within 5km of home, for up to an hour per day. All persons over the age of 12 must wear masks while exercising, and playgrounds remain closed. I know that lockdown can be particularly difficult for parents or carers of young children, so I hope this common-sense change helps over the coming days.

08.01.2022 #throwbackthursday Sorry about the grainy photo, it popped up on my memories and I though this is such a good photo to show you how NOT to carry your babies. It clearly highlights how I am depending on my skeleton and ligaments to hold my then baby on my hip. And I love to hang her on that side. What happens over time is a sore lower back and should neck and shoulders. Often it is not something we do on a one off that caused us issues, it’s what we do repeatedly on a daily... basis that caused discomfort and pain on our mummy bodies. So how can we hold our babies in better alignment? Try to keep your shoulder and ribs directly over your hips when holding baby on your side. Engage your deep supportive transverse abdominal muscles to support your and your baby instead of depending on your skeletal structure. However when your babies gets bigger and heavier, this can become more difficult as there is a tendency to thrush the hips out to the side. Awareness is the key. Alternate sides or use a good baby carriers to do a front or back carry so the weight of your baby is spread evenly on both sides of your body. Not sure how to engage your deep transverse abdominal muscles for your daily movements as a mum? Come to try out one of my Active Mama Classes and learn how! 04.01.2022 I always say we got to move in a way we enjoy! Could this be the new way we all move??

03.01.2022 This. What I love about what Sarah wrote is that it highlights the power of the words and language we use, sometimes I often say to the Active Mamas. How we phrase things when we speak and when we think has profound effect on our actions and behaviour. For Mamas experiencing difficulties with your firstborn, have a read of Sarah’s words

02.01.2022 A big congratulations to Rachel - her PhD project is now published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise! ACSM Journals Rachel completed a randomized cont...rolled trial investigating the impact of a structured aerobic exercise program on the sympathetic nervous system control of blood pressure in pregnancy. We looked at heart rate, blood pressure and the activity of the sympathetic nervous system in pregnant women who either A) completed an exercise intervention or B) did not complete an exercise intervention. The exercise intervention started at 20 weeks and went until 34 weeks gestation and included 25-40minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise for 3-4 days per week. We found that women who exercised during their pregnancies had lower resting heart rate and less active nervous systems than women in the control (non-exercising) group and none developed high blood pressure (hypertension) during their pregnancies. This is very exciting because we already knew that prenatal exercise can reduce the risk for developing gestational hypertension - but now we know one mechanism why! To all of the incredible women who volunteered their time to participate in this study - THANK YOU!!!
