25.01.2022 Great to have @thefijiancripples in clinic yesterday for some preseason / strength training work Both wingers, both injured at the same time with the same arm.....coincidence ..... Sometimes being injured in game scenarios is unavoidable....but it’s part of the job as an exercise physiologist to develop ways of training around an injury, with a focus of best practice injury rehab management principles. Don’t use being injured as a barrier to exercise. Get some hel...p and see an exercise physiologist to help in management of exercise when injured. To best prevent injury: = you can’t go wrong with getting strong = training load management is crucial = training variability is key = recovery is as important as exercise Shout out to @bennavo and @shea_lala for putting in the work in weights room for preseason #injury #rugby #rehab #exercisephysiology #beingactivematters @activemattersaep

18.01.2022 Callum Hicks with a sprinkle of pump at end of his session this morning featuring blood flow restriction with Occlusion Cuff - BFR Training The key considerations in BFR training are contraindications, occlusion pressure, # load %, and patient comfort. While contraindicated for some populations including pregnant women, or those with DVT Hx, there are great applications for rehab and performance in other applicable groups. Occlusion creates an environment of high metaboli...c stress, and this concentration of metabolites starts a chain reaction leading to hypertrophy and anabolic changes with loads far lower than traditional high-load resistance training. Current best evidence suggests loads of around 30% of 1RM, high-volume (75 rep total), and short rest periods of 30-60 seconds. #BFR #occlusiontraining #rehab #exercisephysiology #activematters #beingactivematters #occulsioncuff Effectus Physio See more

11.01.2022 #Repost @exerciseright_aus with @make_repost According to a national survey by the RACGP (Australian College of General Practitioners), many GPs will not initiate a conversation about physical activity with a patient they know to be resistant to changing long-term habits. As a result, GPs feel more comfortable prescribing medication, as patients more easily accept them ... So while Exercise Right for Doctors week is all about educating doctors and nurses to understand the importance of prescribing exercise to their patients, it goes both ways! We ALL need to embrace change and take accountability for our own health. 10.01.2022 Should we be introducing Nordic’s into conditioning programs for prevention of hamstring injury? Studies suggest the introduction of Nordics dramatically reduce hamstring injuries in teams (Goode et al 2015). But comparably so, hip extension based strength training interventions reduced injury more in comparison to Nordics - Bourne et al. (2018)... Research suggests that other exercises like stiff legged deadlifts have higher biceps femoris lateral head (BFLH) activation which is a common site for injury in high speed sport. What’s better? Nordics or Hip Extension? The answer is BOTH and more! The way we see it, piecing the research together a hamstring injury prevention program needs to encompass hip and knee concentric and eccentric focused exercises with a bias for eccentric work. We also know that injury prevention for Hamstrings should involve variability and high speed, low load and high volume reconditioning in return to sport #hamstrings #injury Effectus Physio #beingactivematters Shea Lalagavesi

08.01.2022 Anterior knee load is not the devil In rehab we strengthen movements that aren’t strong. It sounds simple, but that’s the most fundamental tool we have. There are many ways to perform a split squat and none of them are incorrect! As long as the exercise is prescribed with direction. ... Here @callanharker is exploring ranges through his hip, knee and ankle that he’s previously avoided, and he’s doing it regardless of what his pelvic angle is... you don’t have to reinvent wheel every time you do an exercise, just load it in a range your body can handle, and then slowly progress it #beingactivematters #injuredknee #injuredankle

02.01.2022 We love the recovery commentary in relation to this article If you want guidelines on how to manage soreness this is great general summary. Just because it makes you feel better it doesn’t actually mean that it helps you to recover

01.01.2022 #Repost @jonosteedman with @make_repost For the person who’s fought guilt and fear around foods, saying yes to a bad food is a win. Equally, for someone who’s struggled with moderation around certain foods, saying no is a win. ... There’s no right/one/best way to go about this. Unfortunately, II feel like we’re all told we need to sit at one end of the spectrum. If our focus is abs and butts, saying no to these foods and restricting them entirely is seen as good. While there’s nothing wrong with abstaining or reducing your intake of things to achieve some goals, this can be a slippery slope into a restrictive, damaging relationship with food. If we’re saying no to diets and listening to our emotional needs, eating the whole bag of chips is good. While there’s nothing wrong with a bit of emotional eating, this can be a slippery slope into an excessive, damaging relationship with food. Everyone is at a different point, and has different needs. You are allowed to have all of it. You are allowed to have some of it. You’re allowed to have none of it. Just make sure you’re doing it from a place of joy, and not in the place of something else. Anyway, this got a bit heavy sorry. Just trying to make up for sharing a meme this week I guess See more
