24.01.2022 COTM = What can a chiropractor do to help with a disc herniation. . We are continuing our understanding on disc herniations for condition of the month (COTM). We understand what a disc herniation is, what causes them, and what signs/symptoms show with them. For this post, we’ll dwell into what a chiropractor can do to help with a disc herniation. . From a chiropractic perspective, there are several things we can do to help with a disc herniation. After conducting a thorough e...xam, we would work on muscle regions that’ll be tight and stiff. Muscles will become tight in a person with a disc herniation as people utilise other muscle groups to help with protecting the disc. We would apply soft tissue techniques, as well as using other physiological therapeutics to help with muscle tension. . As chiropractors, we can perform spinal manipulation and mobilisations, however, this modality may not be suitable on the disc herniation site. This is due to the increased risk of exacerbating symptoms, depending on the disc herniation type. The more severe the herniation, the more likely we would refer over for medical intervention and imaging. We would go more for a low force modality to help with proper movement around the region of pain, rather than work on the painful region. . Depending on what movements relieve or exacerbate symptoms, depends purely on what exercises work best for a disc herniation. Since a disc herniation is generally caused by large amount of force on the low back/neck with biomechanical dysfunction, it’s important that exercises are incorporated to not only help strengthen weak muscle groups, but also help improve mobility and stability, as well as develop physical cues to have proper biomechanical function. . It is crucial for a healthcare professional to apply a thorough examination as well as thoroughly listen and ask questions about the complaint. The more information we have, the more we can do to help provide care, as well as refer to the most appropriate healthcare professional. If you thought this post was informative, give this post a big like. Be sure to not take this as advice and ensure to seek a healthcare professional for further advice. See more

20.01.2022 COTM = What is Whiplash Associated Disorder . At Active Movement Chiropractic, neck pain is one of the most common complaints people see a chiropractor for. There are various reasons people suffer from neck pain. One particular reason people come in may experience neck pain from some kind of trauma. In today’s post, I’ll cover a common condition people will see us for; Whiplash Associated Disorder (WAD).... . WAD is a common condition that generally arises from trauma, wherever it’ll be from a car accident, being pushed over, a collision to the head region, etc. When a person experiences this event, the head moves in various degrees of movement where the neck moves beyond it’s physical capability. This kind of movement is generally considered hyperflexion and hyperextension. Think of it like the neck and head moving very quickly like someone using a whip. . At the end of the movement, there is a recoiled mechanism that comes about afterwards where the head moves quickly in the opposite direction. At that point, the structures in the head and neck experiences overload where straining of muscles and spraining of joints and ligaments occur. Refer to the second image for clarification of this mechanism. . If you do experience pain and discomfort in the neck region following this kind of trauma, various types of signs and symptoms will generally arise. That why it’s important to get this kind of injury evaluated and treated by a healthcare profession. . If you thought this post was informative, give it a like. The next post will cover some of the signs and symptoms that generally arises from WAD. @ Yarram, Victoria

18.01.2022 COTM = What causes a herniated disc? . We are continuing our understanding on disc herniations for condition of the Month (COTM). Since we know what a disc herniation is, how does it occur? What kind of forces create this condition to occur? . Whenever a person believes to have a disc herniation, or a health professional suspect a disc herniation, it is crucial to create a proper case history to understand how it occurred. Most disc herniations occur from several factors. The... most common cause of disc herniation is from lifting a heavy object by using your back muscles, rather than muscles in your legs and hips. This heavy lifting with twisting and turning can potentially causes the disc to tear or rupture. Rarely does a disc herniation occur from a traumatic event, such as falling or a blow to the back. . It’s also important to know that as we age, the discs become less flexible and more prone to tearing. This is due to the decrease levels of fluid inside the disc when compared to a younger person. Another factor worth considering would be occupation. Depending on how physically demanding the job is, depends purely on increasing your risk of back injuries. Other factors worth considering for disc herniations maybe weight, genetics, and smoking. . In the next post for COTM, we’ll dwell further into what signs and symptoms occur from a disc herniation. If you thought this post was informative, feel free to give it a like and tag someone who may have a disc herniation. Please seek a health/medical professional for advice. @ Yarram, Victoria See more

15.01.2022 COTM = What are the signs and symptoms of a herniated disc? . We are continuing our understanding on disc herniations for condition of the month (COTM). We understand what a disc herniation is, as well as what causes them. For this post, we’ll dwell into what signs and symptoms are present for condition like this. . When a disc herniation is present, various signs and symptoms maybe present. If the disc herniation compresses onto the nerve roots of our spine, it can cause pai...n, numbness and tingling, overactive reflexes, and muscle weakness/spasms around the site of injury, or down the arm/leg. It is also possible to have a stiff neck/low back and decrease in walking ability (antalgic gait). The complaint may be relieved when standing up or leaning backwards, whereas sitting down, bending forward/twisting may aggravate your symptoms. . It is possible for someone to have a disc herniation that does not cause any signs and symptoms. This is generally called a disc bulge, where the bulge itself does not compress onto the nerve roots. . Just because you experience these signs/symptoms, does not mean you have a disc herniation. This is why it is important to consult your healthcare practitioner for further evaluation, as well as develop an appropriate management plan to not only help with the healthy process of the herniation, but also develop some movement strategies to help incorporate proper stability/control in the affected region. . If you thought this post was informative, give this a big like. Be sure to not take this as advice as this is for your information only. Please seek a healthcare practitioner for further advice. 13.01.2022 Due to the current situation regional Victoria is about to undergo, we have made an unanimous decision to close the clinic for at least two weeks. This decision is to ensure health and safety is our highest priority for not only the clinic, but the medical centre. For all bookings made will be postponed for the next month, unless we make another announcement to extend our closing period. I hope everyone understands the situation. It has not been an easy decision to make, but... we do feel it is the right decision. Keep safe and we will be opening up pretty soon Alex

13.01.2022 We’ve started using dynamic tape as our main biomechanic tape for musculoskeletal conditions. Unlike sports strapping tape and kinesiology tape (rocktape) dynamic tape stretches in all directions to help aid in function and mobility, but it also provides stability when applied correctly. The tensile resistance and recoil in this tape is very similar to a bungee cord where the forces exerted on the tape is dispersed load back into movement. . This tape is hypoallergenic, breathable, latex free, and you can wear it in the shower. It generally lasts on average 3 days before the adhesion wears off. . If you fee as though this tape can help aid, feel free to let us know.
