23.01.2022 Tracys Journey with Active Opportunities "I found the Active Opportunities Hub through the Plus Social at Mermaid Beach. I had spent many years out of work after a spinal injury prevented me from continuing to work as a Medical Receptionist. Losing my job lead to depression and a feeling of grief and loss for a position that I dearly loved and enjoyed. I spent many years in chronic pain even after having spinal surgery. In 2018 I found a doctor who diagnosed me with Dysautono...mia and since then I have been able to manage my pain and my conditions that are associated with Dysautonomia. I wanted to return to the workforce and my support worker referred me to the Active Opportunities to assist me with returning to the workforce through completing the course that is offered via the Active Opportunities Hub. I have been coming to the Active Opportunities Hub now for the past 3 months. It has been life-changing for me to have a purpose and to have been surrounded by a team of very compassionate and understanding staff. Their support and encouragement have been just what need to help me with my feelings of helplessness and depression. Not only are the staff supportive they are a joy to be around and my days are filled with laughter and a purpose in being able to help out in the kitchen and with the students who need some support with their work or tasks. I have also been able to assist Cathy and Tamara with administration work and this has also been something I have really enjoyed. At the end of the day, it's rewarding to finish and see all that is achieved at the Hub with the meals that are cooked and to know that the meals we make are going to feed those who are less fortunate in our society and in need of support by the community. The Active Opportunities Hub is one of the best organisations I have seen on the Gold Coast. Their team and the work they do are invaluable to the community and for those with disabilities to have the opportunity to learn and to gain employment with the support of the team at the Hub."

The number of people who are finding themselves in hardship has significantly increased in 2020 due to the current climate we are living in, we need to band together to assist our community as much as we can. 22.01.2022 EMPLOYED! Well done Tracy! "I have thoroughly enjoyed my time and experiences at Active Opportunities. I have met so many interesting people and I have learnt how we can all give each other life long skills. It is not just the cooking that I have enjoyed. It is the privilege of cooking for the homeless and being a sort of mentor to the other students, who are younger.... Thank you for the experience, everyone is lovely and kind. I would also like to add, that I now have a job waitressing. Active Opportunities have been very helpful throughout my time with them. Having spent time in the kitchen refreshing and learning new skills needed for obtaining work. The Opportunities Hub has been a great place to do it. The staff and students, the relaxed but essential learning style suits anyone. They treat each and everyone with the utmost respect and understand we are all different with our learning levels and our own individuality. 21.01.2022 My name is Susan Reid. I live at Arundel and have two beautiful girls who have now moved out and I have a beautiful grandson who I adore very much. I previously worked in disability and Aged Care and love it. I finished up working in Aged Care in October as I got ill and haven’t worked since then as I have been focusing on my health. I believe I have a very positive outlook on life, and this has strengthened due to my illness. I realised life is precious but short-lived. I ...did a Certificate III in Hospitality and finished that in February 2020 including 120 hours of work experience at the Currumbin RSL. This is just before Covid hit. I am currently with my service provider GCESS and was told about a great little course that I could do at Active Opportunities Hub doing a Certificate II in Food Processing. I am currently loving the time I spend here and particularly like working with the team cooking for the homeless and of course we get to eat meals that have cooked. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere and I am hoping to get some part-time paid work when I have finished. I would also like to further my career and keep studying. My passion is to help heal people particularly End of Life and would like to acquire some counselling skills and End of Life skills on my journey. 04.01.2022 "Before The Opportunities Hub I was miserable, I slept all day because I had nothing to look forward to while my son was at school. My anxiety was at an all-time high, I just needed something to change!!! I thought about getting a job, but I had no experience and felt like no one would hire me. Then I heard about an amazing place that helped people in similar situations like mine, thanks to some great advice from a friend, I decided to give Active Opportunities a phone call.... Cheryl was amazing, she took me on a tour of the Opportunities Hub, she made me feel really welcome and comfortable. One week later, I started a Certificate III in Food Processing at The Opportunities Hub and I have never been happier!!!! My self-confidence has improved so much and I am excited about my future.
