19.01.2022 What is a bursitis and why is it so painful? Bursitis is characterized by swelling of the bursae. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs which act as a cushion for the tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the body. Which allow smooth movements of the ligaments, muscles, and tendons. Sometimes the bursae become swollen which leads to the area around them becoming extremely tender and painful. This is what is called as bursitis. When the bursa of the hip is swollen then it is termed as bur...sitis of the hip. Bursitis is not limited only to the hips, but may also occur in the shoulder, knee or elbow. Bursitis in the hip may be acute or chronic. Overuse is the primary cause of bursitis of the hip which causes excessive stress on the hip joint. Additionally, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, gout, or pseudo-gout may also result in bursitis of the hip. In some cases, an injury or direct blow to the hip may result in bursitis of the hip. Bacterial infections are also known to cause bursitis of the hip. Individuals suffering from scoliosis are also predisposed to having bursitis in the hip. Hip Bursitis At Active Physio Health we can resolve your bursitis by identifying the common contributors to this pain, and guide you through a specifically targeted and gradually progressed rehabilitation https://activephysiohealth.com.au/physio-blog/hip-pain/

18.01.2022 Don’t let knee pain get you down! Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Runners knee Patellofemoral pain syndrome or Runner’s Knee is one of the most common knee conditions of both the young active sportsperson and the elderly. Patellofemoral pain syndrome is the term for pain felt behind and around your kneecap, where your patella (kneecap) articulates with your thigh bone (femur). This joint is known as your patellofemoral joint... Patellofemoral pain syndrome is mainly due to excessive patellofemoral joint pressure from poor kneecap alignment. What Causes Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome? Your patella normally glides up and down through the femoral groove. As your knee is bent, pressure between your kneecap and the groove increases. This retropatellar pressure is further increased if the patella does not glide normally through the groove, but mistracks, meaning it travels more to one side, making it rub against the femur. The most common causes of patellar mal alignment are an abnormal muscle imbalance and joint control Sports include running, footy, tennis, netball, football, volleyball, basketball, skiing and other jumping sports Untreated patellofemoral pain syndrome can also predispose you to other more serious knee condition Come see us at Active Physio Health to get an assessment on your knee. Our team are dedicated to give you an accurate diagnoses and the best treatment to get you back on track. https://activephysiohealth.com.au//do-you-have-patellofem/

16.01.2022 NDIS Misunderstood: Most kids have no trouble with organizing the information they get from their senses. Some may be oversensitive to sounds, sights, textures, flavours, smells and other sensory input. Others may be undersensitive to things like temperature and noise. These kids are often misunderstood. Getting a comprehensive assessment from a professional is imperative. Assessing their highest functional level in multiple facets of life, including physical, cognitive, beh...avioural, biopsychosocial and emotional factors. This information is usually obtained from the primary caregiver and patient. Working together to formulate common goals according to your set plan is our prerogative. The assessment format may be done through play, observation and interaction with surrounding environment. Getting to know the patient on a more personal level, often changes the treatment goals and the treatment approach becomes more holistic. https://activephysiohealth.com.au//services/ndis-providers/

08.01.2022 Cervicogenic headaches We at Active Physio Health see a lot of people who suffer from headaches. Many headaches originate in the neck. Technically, they are called Cervicogenic Headaches. They are a result of dysfunction within the top three vertebral segments of the spine Dysfunction in the neck causes head pain in two distinct ways. The 1st way... Convergence of nerves in the brain the upper cervical spine (neck) and one of the sensation nerves of the head (Trigeminal nerve) both send messages to a common origin in the brain. The brain mistakes messages from the dysfunctional cervical spine as coming from the head. This is a classic example of simple referred pain. The 2nd way Sensitisation of the brain Think of it like a pot of bubbling soup on the stove. If the soup gets too hot, it will overflow and create problems. The electrical messages from the neck are one strong source of input into the Trigemino-Cervical Nucleus that can heat up and cause sensitisation. If these messages are stronger than normal as with neck stiffness and pain, they can trigger brain sensitisation. So. What can we do about it? At Active Physio Health, we use highly trained manual therapy skills to identify movement and position faults of the upper three neck joints that specifically relate to the production of head and neck pain. We can confirm almost immediately if disorders in the upper neck are responsible for headache or migraine. Within four treatments, we expect every headache patient to be significantly improved. https://activephysiohealth.com.au//servic/headache-clinic/

07.01.2022 The dizzy patient Managing patients with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) I’m so dizzy, my head is spinning. Whilst a catchy song by Tommy Roe in the 1960’s, being dizzy is not an enjoyable experience and can be difficult for patients to cope with. One cause of dizziness can be due to Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. How Common is BPPV?... Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of vestibular dysfunction in Australia. An estimated 5.6 million patients present primarily with dizziness per year, and 17-42% of these are diagnosed with BPPV. In Australia, 30% of people over 65 experience vertigo, and similar rates of incidence of BPPV would be expected. BPPV is common in our elderly population, and is associated with increasing incidence of depression, falls and functional impairment. BPPV treatment Since the cause of BPPV is mechanical in nature, so is the treatment. We at Active Physio Health will guide you through a variety of very specific positioning manoeuvres in an attempt to reproduce a spinning sensation and to observe the subsequent nystagmus that presents with it. Based upon the manoeuvre that stimulated dizziness and the direction of the nystagmus observed, we will be able to pinpoint which canal in the ear has been affected. https://activephysiohealth.com.au/physio-blog/vertigo/

02.01.2022 Golfers elbow: What is Golfers elbow? Golfers elbow, or medial epicondylitis, is a painful inflammatory condition located over the medial aspect of the elbow, where the common wrist flexor tendon attaches to the medial epicondyle. It is aggravated by resisted contraction of the wrist flexors and supinator. ... It is a tendon pathology, and as a result it can clinically be classified as a reactive, or degenerative tendinopathy. Reactive tendinopathies are more acute in nature, and are more likely to occur in the younger population. Degenerative tendinopathies occur more commonly in older individuals, or younger individuals with a chronically overloaded tendon. Golfers elbow also occurs less commonly than lateral epicondylitis, or tennis elbow. What can we do for you? At the clinic, we will be able to assess your injury and accurately diagnose whether you have Golfers elbow, as well give you the best treatment plan depending on whether it is in the acute, or chronic stage. 02.01.2022 Muscle soreness after exercise DOMS. We have all experienced that feeling of aching sore muscles after exercise whether it is after the first session in a couple of years or after a particularly hard work out. This is commonly known as Delayed onset of muscle soreness or DOMS for short. DOMS is exercise related muscle pain which develops after exercise, this is due to microtrauma which occurs in the muscles resulting in an inflammatory process. The muscular soreness dev...elops and can last up to 24-72 hours but may last longer depending on the intensity of the workout. To prevent DOMs or decrease symptoms after future exercises the easiest way to do this is to gradually build up your exercise program apposed to going in guns blazing. Gradually building up the volume of training this is around 10% per week. If you are experiencing the symptoms of DOMS there are a number of ways in which you can self-manage these include get moving, don’t be afraid to use these muscles gentle exercise can assist in reducing the stiffness, there is a reason cyclist doing the Tour de France will go for a light ride of at least a 100km on their rest day. Foam rolling, using a spikey ball or trigger ball for self-massage and heat can help to relieve some of the symptoms associated with DOMs. Hopefully the tips above will keep your muscles feeling great after your workouts. If you have any questions or feel your muscle soreness has lasted longer than a week, then to book in to see your physiotherapist who can provide you with personalised instructions and advice. https://activephysiohealth.com.au//muscle-soreness-after-/
