25.01.2022 Gross motor skills are very important for everyday life and refer to the large muscle groups of the body for whole body movement such as sitting, standing, crawling, walking, running, kicking, throwing, catching, climbing and jumping. Gross motor skills begin developing from birth with stretching, flexing, movement of arms and legs and we continue to develop into adulthood at schools, home, work and sports. Often gross motor skills are linked to sports and activities, however... we need them in day to day life such as getting in and out of bed / car etc as well as getting dressed, standing and walking. Gross motor skills assist in strengthening and fine tuning our fine motor skills (small muscle movements of the body such as fingers, toes, hand and feet) which are important for picking up small objects with our fingers, holding utensils for eating, buttoning a shirt as well as holding a pencil for writing and drawing.
