21.01.2022 This Crystal-clear Lake Is Home to a Sunken Forest of Upside Down Trees Nestled in a forested area in the Tian Shan Mountains, Kazakhstan’s Lake Kaindy invites those who visit to take a swim in a surreal underwater world. Created by an earthquake that took place in 1911, the freshwater lake is home to an array of fir trees that not only jet out from its waters, but that call those who take a dive to explore an entire forest sunken under its clear waters.... When the earthquake hit, it created a natural dam that slowly filled with rainwater over the years, leaving the trees that were damaged during the earthquake submerged in the water, according to representatives from Almaty’s tourism board.

13.01.2022 9 Treescapes Dramatically Shaped by Wind While earthquakes and tornadoes can strike land with such a force as to uproot trees completely from the ground, strong gusts of wind are sometimes enough to dramatically shape treescapes. Often brought about by heavy, consistent, and prevailing winds, these distorted trees, from Twisleton Scars in the English countryside to the tropical city of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, give landscapes an eerie and whimsical bent. Here are nine treescapes around the world that are dramatically shaped by the wind.
12.01.2022 Today for NAIDOC Week we take a look at some different plants and trees traditionally used by Indigenous Australians to create things such as medicines, tools and hunting and fighting equipment. These technologies have been used for thousands of years and passed down through generations to be still used today in some remote communities. "The application of knowledge to create technologies is an integral part of the heritage and future of Australia. It is also essential to sustainable development. In traditional Aboriginal societies science and technology were used to manage the environment for the benefit of all people. 10.01.2022 TEAM MEMBER STORIES JORDANA McCALLUM Human Resources Business Partner Jordana McCallum had never envisaged herself working in the arboriculture industry, but a temporary contract with Active Tree Services two years ago quickly opened her eyes to a sector she describes as both ‘exciting and ever-evolving’. Jordana explains she had initially come from a hospitality background, and it was an industry she grew up in, courtesy of the fact her family owns and runs the Lonsdale ...Hotel south of Adelaide. 09.01.2022 As we celebrate NAIDOC Week around the country, we at Active will be sharing some posts that highlight the cultural significance trees have to our Indigenous Australian culture. Today we look at the dendroglyphs or ‘carved trees’ of the Gamilaroi and Wiradjuri people in Western NSW, as photographed by Clifton Cappie Towle before his death in 1946. The Wiradjuri people of central NSW carved complex designs into trees to mark the burial site of a celebrated man whose passing had a devastating effect on the community. It has been suggested that the carvings were associated with the culture heroes admired by the man in life and were thought to provide a pathway for his spirit to return to the sky world. 08.01.2022 Tree is a virtual experience that transforms you into a rainforest tree, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2017 New Frontier. With your arms as branches and body as the trunk, you experience the tree’s growth from a seedling into its fullest form and witness its fate firsthand. With precisely controlled physical elements including vibration, heat, fan, and body haptics, the team created a fully immersive virtual reality storytelling tool, where the audience no longer watches but is transformed into a new identity, a giant tree in the Peruvian rainforest.

04.01.2022 Today for NAIDOC Week we take a look at ‘tree scarring’. This may be familiar to many people around Australia as we can still see the remnants of Indigenous Australian labour that assisted in the creation of objects such as canoes and shelter. Scarred trees have special significance to Aboriginal people today and a large number of scars can be directly connected to Aboriginal activities.
