25.01.2022 Im so troubled by this news and what it says about Human Nature. My first personal response was a scathing critique on the selfish and entitled behaviour I keep witnessing when trying to maintain social distancing in any Brisbane location. Then my Health and Safety Risk brain switched on. What is it about our perception of risk, that let these young women think this was acceptable? Is it that the action, then the consequences are so far removed from each other, that these young women believed it wouldnt happen to them, and everyone would be safe. I cant let myself believe that it was just pure selfishness, but a feeling of invincibility and disbelief. Come on fellow safety nerds, whats our next wave in social marketing to get people to take this threat seriously?

23.01.2022 After yet another sobering ANZAC day where we remember those who lost their lives in Military conflicts, its a good time to remember all those who we commemorate were at work. These were people that joined the military knowing full well the risk to their life, and they are brave and selfless for this. For those that go to work, not expecting conflict, and not expecting to lose their life there is another commemoration. A National Day of mourning for those that have lost thei...r lives at Work. Shane Webcke will be in attendance, and I have seen him before deliver a talk about what it is like to lose a parent to a workplace accident. It is sobering and heartfelt, and difficult to not shed a tear. It reminds me of why we do this job. One of the most vilified roles in the modern workplace, being a safety professional truly is about helping organisation to realise the importance of sending everybody home safe. https://www.worksafe.qld.gov.au//queensland-workers-memori

18.01.2022 Joe Hildebrand has summed this up beautifully. Understanding the outrage and sadness that attaches us all to the dreadful incident at Dreamworld. The thing I keep thinking is how many other lower profile workplaces are just the same? There are so many workplaces where the training is cursory, the engineering is outdated, the management is weak and it does result in serious injury or death. https://www.news.com.au///9936db87bd77bc1bb4b87520a4933621
17.01.2022 How healthy is your workplace? Health and mental health have been a huge focus in the WHS space the last year or two, and the regulators have been very helpful providing a great deal of information and free tools to help us deal with this. In the link provided is an eye opening table of data (from Work Health and Safety Queensland), that describes the main manageable risk factors that contribute to poor health by industry. The data highlights groups that were significantly ...worse than the general population and examines: - Body Mass Index (ratio of weight and height), - Waist Circumference (indicator of visceral fat and higher risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes), - Poor eating habits, - Unhealthy drinking habits. Have a look at your industry category, and see if the data rings true for you personally or the people around you. Post and share with your work colleagues. It might be time to start the discussion in your workplace, about how you can all get healthier and happier, and how work can help you do it. Maybe bring it up with your safety committee, supervisor or General Manager to see what theyre doing about health at work. As a WHS Practitioner, Ive seen first hand how an unhealthy worker can make for some pretty unhealthy statistics... think about how a minor incident or injury can be exacerbated if the person already has significant health issues. A minor slip is more likely to become a slip disc or serious soft tissue injury if a person is morbidly obese. A minor injury is more likely to become a systemic infection if a person suffers from Type 2 Diabetes. The recovery from a musculoskeletal injury in an already inactive person is likely to take much longer. The compounding issues of an unhealthy workforce are a reality. Consider the more positive aspects of improving the health in your workforce. By showing your workforce that you CARE about their well-being in and out of work, isnt it just possible that workers may feel CARED ABOUT, and improve their participation, collaboration and hopefully productivity. Taking action doesnt even need to take a lot of money. To develop a health and wellbeing program at work, Work health and Safety Queensland also have lots of FREE tools to help you identify health issues and plan activities to improve health at work. And of course (here comes the plug), our highly skilled staff at Actum can help your workplace assess and plan for a healthier workplace, if you find the FREE stuff a bit tricky, or youre just time poor. http://www.healthyworkers.gov.au//publish/Content/industry http://www.healthyworkers.gov.au//publish/Content/industry
15.01.2022 I dont know if anybody else watched this story on Australian Story last night. But seeing this follow up story on the ABC this morning has me feeling outraged! How can a nurse who is lured out of her home on an on-call arrangement to attend to another person, and is then subsequently murdered NOT be a work-related death. Had it not been for her duties as a nurse working in that capacity she would not have been murdered. Watching the employers response to this incident sad...dened me greatly, as they were caught between being able to protect their workers and not being able to fund the service! There are multiple and grievous wrongs here! The state of our health care system, that an essential remote service can not be adequately funded to also support the health and safety of its workers is deplorable. The acceptance of the employers that it has to be one or the other - service OR safety- is appalling. The ongoing acceptance by nurses that some level of violence will probably occur in the line of their duty is terribly sad. As a society we should be ashamed that this can and does occur. We need to be providing accessible health care to all, and we need to look after our frontline health care providers! http://www.abc.net.au//gayle-woodfords-murder-not/9494792
14.01.2022 Looking forward to some Professional Development at the SIA Mindful Employer Workshop.
13.01.2022 Some food for thought and relevant to all management practices, including the health and safety space. It demonstrated why understanding safety culture is so important.

10.01.2022 This is an interesting and quick read where a principal contractor did not make the area safe enough for a sub-contractor to work in. Hazards were raised generically with the flooring contractor, but not specific identification of a void in the floor. Both PCBUs have pleaded guilty, and I guess this is because of the obvious nature of the hazard and how easy it would have been to control. A lesson I think in owning your risks. #safety #constructionsafety #contractormanagement #riskmanagement #reasonablypracticable #ohs "The magistrate indicated the defendant had entered the contract to complete the work, expecting the profit that came along with that work, and knew of the duty it owed, saying the duty of care owed by the defendant could not be contracted out of and contracting others does not lessen culpability."
10.01.2022 Because Im happy- the hidden driver of success. Happy people live longer!
09.01.2022 I saw Rachel speak at a conference years ago, and I have to say her words still resonate with me. I continue to quote (or misquote) her words and sentiments to clients frequently. So I thought Id share an article reflective of her presentation. Check out her book if you think her words make good sense. I think they do. Good sense for all organisations going through change or tough times.

07.01.2022 Now this is an interesting proposition. I wish to know more...
07.01.2022 This is an interesting article, and while it doesnt offer up solution to the problem, it certainly opens the discussion. Ive been in many workplaces recently focussed on mental wellness in the workplace, and yet Im wondering if it has any real impacts. Id be really interested to hear of any businesses that have tried to actually measure the impact of their mental wellness programs. From an OHS perspective, I think the best place to start is with genuine, planned risk as...sessment, that considers the psychological effects of work and particularly the psychological impacts of change. Please share your thoughts and experiences. https://www.hrmonline.com.au/re/message-suicide-workplace/
06.01.2022 As a follow-up to my recent post about Asbestos and home renovators, Id like to share this really simple guide published by Australian Department of Health. Some quick things to think about... Asbestos risks arise when the fibres are disturbed and become airborne. They become disturbed when the materials break down or is broken, cut, sanded, drilled etc. So you can generally control the risk by keeping the fibres suppressed by- coating the material, wetting the materials, w...rapping the materials..and protecting yourself from inhaling the fibres with a P2 level dust mask, and disposable clothing. There are strict guidelines about how you dispose of the asbestos containing materials. Have a good look through this guide, its really easy to understand, and gives very practical advice. Have fun home renovators. http://www.health.gov.au//publishing./Content/asbestos-toc
