23.01.2022 Health Alert: Possible 'thunderstorm asthma' event Thursday 12th and Friday 13th November ACT Health have AGAIN warned that there is potential for a thund...erstorm asthma event in the ACT this Thursday and Friday. Thunderstorm asthma can occur when increased pollen levels occur followed by severe thunderstorms. Severe storms have the ability to burst pollen grains into much smaller particles, which can then be inhaled deep into the lungs triggering potentially severe asthma attacks. Whilst 'thunderstorm asthma' is a relatively rare event, it can be life threatening to asthmatics and individuals with allergies such as 'hay fever'. Individuals who have never experienced asthma symptoms, may have an asthma attack during a 'thunderstorm asthma' event. In November 2016, a thunderstorm asthma event in Melbourne resulted in 10 deaths and over 2000 calls for emergency assistance. Where possible, individuals at higher risk should avoid being outside during a thunderstorm this weekend especially in the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows. If you have your air conditioning on, turn it onto recirculate. If you develop asthma symptoms, follow your asthma action plan. If you experience asthma symptoms that are not relieved by your usual asthma treatment, you should seek further urgent medical advice. In the event of a medical emergency, call 000 immediately. Canberrans who suffer from asthma should be taking their 'preventer' medication, carry their 'reliever' puffer at all times, and ensure their treatment and action plans are up-to-date during the pollen season. People more likely to get thunderstorm asthma... -Those who get asthma and seasonal hay fever -Those with hay fever who have never had asthma -Those with past asthma or unrecognised asthma Common symptoms of asthma... -Wheezing or whistling sound coming from the chest while you are breathing -Breathlessness -A feeling of tightness in the chest -A persistent cough Asthma symptoms can be different for different people. All staff at ACTWell are experts in their field, not just trainers. Experienced Paramedics, Firefighters, Military Combat Medics, and experienced Emergency nurses... that’s who you will be getting trained by at ACTWell. A company founded by Firefighters and former school teachers, who’s goal is to directly or indirectly save 100 lives in the Canberra Community. Our aim is to increase public understanding of the need for EARLY CPR, to help First Aiders understand their role and how critical it is for them to start CPR before emergency services arrive, and most importantly, to build confidence and remove the common fears and misconceptions that First Aiders face. The quality lies in the experience of all of our trainers. No matter what course you undertake with ACTWell, you can be assured the trainer has had plenty of direct experience. Imagine being trained in emergency evacuation procedures by the people who will be attending your workplace in an emergency and helping you get out. Firefighters teaching you how to safely use extinguishers. A combat medic teaching you about controlling a critical bleed. A paramedic teaching you about quality CPR. 18.01.2022 I know we post this video every year... but please stay safe this holiday season, and have a merry Christmas Canberra! (WARNING: Graphic Footage) PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY THIS CHRISTMAS!... Let’s do all that we can to lower the ACT’s road trauma and lives lost this Christmas. Think of your loved ones. Think of emergency services. Think of other people on the road. Think of their loved ones... Fair warning Canberra, this video shows some graphic footage... Victoria’s Transport Accident Commission (TAC) aired the first of these commercials in 1989. This extremely powerful montage was put together 20 years later, when the state had more than halved its road toll, and gone from the most dangerous to the safest roads in Australia. Now it’s our turn. Don’t be a statistic Canberra. Be Somebody's Hero #BeSomebodysHero #ACTWell #cbr #canberra #canberrafirstaidtraining

18.01.2022 Every day should be R U OK DAY, but it is in fact today, the 10 September. It is also World Suicide Prevention Day both of these important initiatives strive to reduce the incidence and impact of suicide. If you think someone might be having a particularly hard time, reach out to them and ask them "R U OK?" Ask this question today, tomorrow, or any other day of the year that you feel someone you know might be struggling. Days of importance such as an individuals birthday, ...Fathers Day, Mothers Day or Christmas can be the hardest for some whilst others are focussed on happiness. Friends, family and workmates might be having trouble coping with the challenges of 2020. It has been a particularly difficult year for many. Families have been devastated. Homes destroyed. Lives lost. Families separated. Parents kept from their children. Loved ones of the deceased unable to farewell their fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters. This year has truly been the worst year ever for many, and they might not be OK. Checking in really can make a big difference. Asking ‘R U OK?’ Is a great first step in looking out for someone you care about, but it’s also important to know how to keep the conversation going. If your gut is telling you something isn’t right, knowing how to encourage them to get help could make all the difference. One thing you can do to mark today, and be prepared to help those around you, is taking part in the online ‘Question, Persuade, Refer’ training. This training can help you feel more confident in talking to someone about their mental health and wellbeing. 17.01.2022 A VR demo of what NOT to do in a kitchen fire when cooking with hot oil and fat... Do NOT use water. It will explode! When a single water droplet turns to steam, the vapour expands approximately 1500 times its original size. These much finer steam particles then carry the burning oil as they spread across the kitchen, causing a huge fireball to erupt in a small, confined area. ... The result is substantial fire spread, and often severe burns. Don't stop looking while you're cooking, and as always... 15.01.2022 DO YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING? With the easing of social distancing measures, we are slowly increasing the number of participants in our short assessment sessions. Whilst maintaining social distance measures, wearing gloves and a mask, and not coming in to contact with other participants, how would you feel about performing First Aid with another course participant?... We will still be using our 'covid proof' bubbles with 2 participants in each area. Participants will NOT be making direct contact with one another, but may be required to assist each other during practical demonstrations. Sterilisation of equipment occurs before and after each session, and hand sanitiser is available to all participants. Our courses will remain predominantly online, with just a short face to face assessment. Please let us know if you would feel comfortable participating, where all measures are taken to ensure your safety, working with one other student to demonstrate assessment tasks.
