18.01.2022 A salesperson once told me he sold industrial adhesives. Glue? I asked. We compromised on expensive glue. When asked to tell me more, he launched into a well-rehearsed pitch. Words like ions, polymers, bonding & viscosity described his glue as a noun. I asked him to describe glue as a verb. After a pause he said an aerospace application. Rivets used to affix skins, add weight, weaken the structure & increase drag. Adhesives can make aircraft lighter, stronger, more fuel-efficient & are cheaper to apply than rivets. I got it. Executives are interested in usage & outcomes, not offerings. Good Selling! Deb

04.01.2022 Gaining access to executives during sales cycles is difficult. When granted access, failure to relate can cause abrupt ends to opportunities. Sellers are comfortable with lower levels. Discussions are product-focused. Extensive product training prepares sellers for these calls. Executive calls require more focus on uncovering business outcomes and then asking relevant questions buyers can answer to determine what is needed to improve business results. Visions articulated at capability vs. feature levels provide executives a conceptual understanding of what theyre buying. Without help mapping capabilities against business outcomes, sellers are on their own in executive calls. A small percentage will be successful.
