25.01.2022 We have a big afternoon planned on Day 2 of the #hpsss2020, with a different format and a collective presenting on Injury prevention & rehabilitation research to practice. Leading the session will be Ryan Timmins. Dr Timmins is a Senior Lecturer at the ACU as well part of the High Performance team at the Melbounre Victory FC. Ryan has had various roles with the Queensland Academy of Sport Mens Football Program, Brisbane Strikers and Brisbane Roar. During his 10 years in el...ite sport, Ryan has been mainly working on athlete injury prevention and rehabilitation as well strength and conditioning. Ryan completed his PhD at the ACU in 2016, focusing on factors which are associated with an increased likelihood of injury and potential interventions to mitigate these risks. Ryan is a Level 2 Strength and Conditioning Coach with the Australian Strength & Conditioning Association. Ryan continues to undertake research within injury prevention and rehabilitation, now with a focus on programs which can be implemented in elite sporting environments. 24.01.2022 At the heart of each sporting body & club is a management team, they steer the ship and work towards helping athletes and athletic departments achieve their goals. Mr Dirk Melton is very familiar with the intrinsic operations of this and how good governance drives success. Dirk Melton is a scholar-consultant working as a senior lecturer at ACU. He also advises boards, CEOs and head coaches on the complexity of the elite sport athletic department high-performance system (HP...S) and how it can be best governed based on the lifecycle phase of the organisation. In addition to his teaching and research he is currently advising the QRL, Des Hasler (Manly), and Andrej Lemanis (Brisbane Bullets) and has previously consulted to numerous teams and conducted reviews of multiple athletic departments including the Wallabies, NSW Waratahs and NRL Dragons. Dirk has a chemical engineering degree (biomedical) from the University of Melbourne, an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management, and is in the final stages of completing a PhD in system dynamics at the University of Queensland in association with MIT, titled, Building a Resilient Elite Sport HPS. He disclosed his autism two years ago and has become an inspiration within the disability community and is acknowledged for his work with the Federal Government on the National Disability Strategy and Disability Royal Commission. 23.01.2022 Mr Josh Ruddy will be joining Jack, Ryan and Selwyn in the supper session on Day 2. Josh Ruddy is a member of the ACU Hamstring Injury Research Team and is currently submitting his PhD thesis. Josh completed his PhD in conjunction with the Melbourne Football Club and spent three years there in a sports science/PhD student role. The topic of Joshs thesis is the predictive modelling of injuries in elite Australian footballers. Josh has a high level of knowledge regarding dif...ferent statistical and analytical concepts and has been invited to present on sports analytics and data science at numerous internationally recognised conferences. He applies the skills he has developed to the collection, analysis and reporting of a variety of data related to the assessment of high performance athletes in consultation with a variety of sporting organisations including the English Premier League, AFL, NRL and A-League teams. 21.01.2022 We are pleased to have ACU alumni Mr Selwyn Griffith from Brisbane Lions present at the #hpsss2020. Selwyn Griffith has been an integral part of the Brisbane Lions High Performance Department for eight years, during this time he has held several positions in the medical and strength and conditioning departments. He holds masters degrees in osteopathy and high performance sport and has a keen interest in strength and power profiling and programming and return to performance s...trategies. His current role involves the development and implementation of strength and power programs for the AFL squad and return to performance programs for injured athletes, including strength and power assessments and programming, re-conditioning and training load management. 20.01.2022 We are pleased to have Professor Louise Burke back in the line up for the HPS Summer Seminar in 2020. Professor Louise Burke is a sports dietitian with nearly 40 years of experience in the education and counselling of elite athletes. She was Head of Sports Nutrition at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) from 1990 to 2018 and continues at the AIS as Chief of Nutrition Strategy. She was also the dietitian for the Australian Olympic team at the Summer Olympic Games from 19...96 to 2012. Professor Burkes publications include more than 300 papers in peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, and the authorship or editorship of several textbooks on sports nutrition. She is an editor of the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism. She was a founding member of the Executive of Sports Dietitians Australia and is a Director of the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition. She was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2009 for her contribution to sports nutrition. In 2014 she was appointed as Chair in Sports Nutrition for the Mary MacKillop Institute of Health Research at ACU in Melbourne. 17.01.2022 Dr Grant Duthie is a senior lecturer at ACU specialising in the analysis of team sport player tracking data. Grant works in conjunction with FIFA in establishing the validity of electronic player tracking systems. His other research interests include specificity of training, strength and power development, and statistics in sport. He has previously worked as an athletic performance coach at National Rugby League and Super Rugby teams. He also consults to numerous international rugby teams and National Basketball Association teams. 13.01.2022 We are lucky to have Professor Sam Robertson presenting alongside Dr Grant Duthie. Sam is a Professor of Sports Analytics at Victoria University. He leads the Sports Performance & Business research program at the university which includes over 100 researchers and HDR students. He oversees a number of the universitys sports knowledge exchange partnerships, including those with Tennis Australia, the AFL & the Western Bulldogs. Sam also consults to various professional team sp...ort franchises and organisations globally such as San Antonio Spurs, FC Barcelona and FIFA. Sams own research focuses predominantly on the application of machine learning to problems in sport, particularly those relating to the decision-making of athletes and organisations. He supervises 13 PhD students and 7 post-doctoral fellows, most of whom are embedded with VUs various industry partners. 10.01.2022 We welcome Mr Alex Natera back to the HPS Summer Seminar in 2020, he will be covering the fundamentals of speed on Feb 4. Alex Natera has been a strength and conditioning coach in elite sport for the past 20 years. He has held positions internationally in professional team sports and across several Olympic sports within national sporting institute systems in Europe, the Middle East and Australia. He has predominantly worked with track and field sprinters over the past deca...de but has recently moved back to team sports and is starting his third season as Head of Strength and Power with the GWS Giants. Alex holds a BSc in Sport Science, an MSc in Applied Sport Science and is currently completing his PhD on repeat power ability. Alex consults to sporting franchises and institutes of sport globally, is a sought-after speaker and has published in peer reviewed scientific journals. Kicking off Day 2 - Feb 5 will be Dr Billy Hulin the Science and Conditioning Coordinator at St George Illawarra Dragons RLFC. Billy has worked with the Dragons for seven years. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Wollongong. He has a masters in workload-injury associations, as well as a PhD in relationships among workload, physical performance and injury risk in ...professional rugby league players and is an accredited Level 2 sport scientist with Exercise and Sport Science Australia. Billy has published numerous articles in scientific journals, including studies that have demonstrated differences in activity profiles between successful and less-successful teams, and the accuracy and reliability of player load and sub-maximal testing measures in rugby league. 10.01.2022 ACUs Associate Professor Shona Halson will be joining the line up on Day 2 (Feb 5) of the #hpsss2020 delivering the topic sleep in elite athletes. She was a senior physiologist at the Australian Institute of Sport for 15 years. She has a PhD in exercise physiology and has over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of sleep, recovery, fatigue, and travel. She is an associate editor of the International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance. Shona was selected as the Director of the Australian Olympic Committee Recovery Centre for three Olympic Games. Shona also provides consultancy services to the Australian Open Tennis Tournament and Nike as part of the Nike Performance Council and Nike Scientific Advisory Panel. 07.01.2022 We are excited to have Professor David Martin as the key note speaker in February 2020. He has accumulated 25 years of experience working with Olympic and professional athletes and is widely recognised as an innovator and leader in high performance sport. Professor Martin is also an accomplished applied sport scientist with more than 110 peer reviewed publications investigating topics such as talent identification, demands of competition, fatigue management, competition analy...sis, altitude training, and thermoregulation. At the Australian Institute of Sport, Professor Martin was a senior physiologist, a National Sport Science Coordinator for Cycling, the lead on cycling and skeleton talent identification projects, and a Director of Performance for the AIS Combat Centre, an initiative he spearheaded that was designed to raise international competitiveness in four Australian Olympic combat sports. He recently worked in the NBA where he served as the Director for Performance Research and Development for the Philadelphia 76ers (20152019), he now is a Professor in the School of Behavioural and Health Science at ACU and the Chief Scientist for APEIRON, a US start-up company focusing on performance and healthy aging. 05.01.2022 Dr Harry Brennan brings a wealth of experience to the #hpsss2020 line up. He will be talking about the challenges of managing and leading sports science practitioners in a high performance environment. Dr Brennan has been involved in High Performance sport for thirty years, and over this time course held a number of different management and leadership roles. He is currently the Sports Science and Physical Preparation Manager at the Victorian Institute of Sport leading a tea...m of 17 staff delivering support across 13 different sport programs. Prior to his role at the VIS, Harry was the National Technical Lead for Strength and Conditioning at the English Institute of sport. During his time at the EIS he worked primarily with British Rowing and GB Hockey as well as co-ordinating the S&C team for their SE Region. Harry started his career as a sports scientist with a PhD in exercise physiology before pursuing a career as a Strength and Conditioning Coach, which has led to his current focus on leading and managing sports science staff. Dean has successfully worked across Olympic and professional sport for many years. His experience has been with the Australian Institute of Sport, Queensland Academy of Sport, Athletics Australia, Brisbane Broncos, Adelaide Crows, Leicester Tigers, Brumbies Rugby, Australian Wallabies and Melbourne Storm. Dean has also consulted in France to Racing Club Narbo...nne Mditerrane, Fdration Franaise de Rugby, Japan Rugby 7s/15s programs and World Rugby. Deans most recent role was as Head of Sport Science to England Senior Rugby Team. He is currently consulting to the Melbourne Rebels. Throughout his career, Dean has been able to move along the coaching-management continuum, functioning effectively either as a coach, performance director or performance consultant. 04.01.2022 Part of the #hpsss2020 super afternoon session on Day 2 - Feb 5 is Dr Jack Hickey. Leading the way in injury prevention & rehabilitation, Jack will share the latest on return to play research. Dr Jack Hickey is a lecturer in the School of Behavioural and Health Sciences at ACU, his research and teaching is in exercise rehabilitation for musculoskeletal and sports injuries. Dr Hickey completed his PhD in hamstring strain injury rehabilitation with the ACU hamstring injury re...search group under the supervision of Dr David Opar. Jacks PhD research has received several awards including the ASICS medal for best paper at the 2017 Sports Medicine Australia conference, young investigator award at the 2018 Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) conference and the 2018 ESSA medal for best PhD thesis in exercise science. Jack is an ESSA Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) with over seven years clinical experience working in musculoskeletal and sports injury assessment and rehabilitation. 02.01.2022 Dr Jonathan Weakley will be kicking off the HPS Summer Seminar on Feb 4, 2020 with a presentation on Velocity-based training:From theory to application. Dr Jonathon Weakley is a lecturer at ACU and an associate research fellow at Leeds Beckett University (UK). His primary areas of research are strength and power development and he has more than 40 peer-reviewed publications on strength and conditioning, and sports science. In 2018, Jonathon won the Young Investigator of the Y...ear award at the ASCA conference for his work into augmented feedback and physical adaptations in rugby union players.
