24.01.2022 Research from the Journal of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience shows acupuncture can increase your bodys overnight secretion of melatonin, a hormone strongly tied to your circadian rhythm or internal clock. The research also showed the acupuncture helped people fall asleep faster, reach deeper sleep and sleep longer. Each of the patients presented with anxiety tied to their insomnia, and the acupuncture also proved to reduce their anxiety. #acupunctureworks #acupunctureforinsomnia #helpwithsleep #naturalremediesforsleep #naturaltherapiesforsleep #acupuncture #research #insomnia #Yinstudio #Kenmore #Brisbane
23.01.2022 Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are all about balance. When an imbalance occurs, symptoms start to appear - pain, injury, insomnia, digestive issues, stress, hormonal problems, allergies, low immunity, depression, anxiety etc. Your bodys natural healing intelligence never forgets how to restore balance and vitality to every cell, tissue, and organ. All you have to do is give it the right support. Research has shown that acupuncture works by helping the body to get more out ...of its own natural healing resources. Our bodies produce a wide range of natural pain relieving substances, natural anti-inflammatory chemicals, hormones, immune system enhancers all without the need for outside drugs. In fact, some of the most effective drugs are man-made synthetic copies of the chemistry our body makes naturally (like cortisone). At Yin Studio in Indooroopilly, you are an active participant in the healing process. You will be educated on the proper way to get your healing system back on track via a targeted, customised treatment plan that will include one or more of the following: acupuncture, nutrition, herbs, lifestyle/mind-body coaching. Why not book in for a free 15 minute consultation with Cathy to discuss how your symptoms can be alleviated. www.yinstudio.com/book-now
23.01.2022 A good article about how exercise can help to protect your knees from injury and can improve knees that are already damaged. A little prevention goes a long way. https://www.smh.com.au//how-exercise-saved-my-clicky-knees
23.01.2022 Self-care is a fundamental pillar of health; it includes making choices for a healthy diet, getting adequate exercise and sleep, as well as stress management. Self-care is an essential part of health care. Some place self-care on the opposite end of the continuum of health-care providers, but I do not see it that way. As a practitioner who is passionate about preventative medicine and optimising quality of life, self-care is everything. Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupun...cture is a holistic treatment system that takes into account the physical, mental-emotional, and spiritual aspects of your current state of health and wellbeing. Acupuncture can calm an over-stimulated nervous system, or nourish a depleted one. I use it frequently for increasing motivation and helping patients reduce negative health behaviours such as smoking and emotional eating. It is extremely beneficial for anyone experiencing anxiety, panic attacks, or depression. Over time, patients become more body aware, and begin to notice more quickly when they are becoming out of balance, which allows them to take hold of the situation before it advances. Many of my patients use regular maintenance acupuncture as a healthy, preventative method of self-care that keeps them feeling more relaxed, better able to cope with stress, and more capable of managing anxiety and depression. Patients often comment also that it helps them sleep more soundly and reduce pain and body tension. Self-care is not just a trendy phrase. Learning to be in touch with our physical and emotional needs and actually acting on them is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. This is not being selfish or maybe it is, but this is selfishness for all the right reasons when we feel well, everyone benefits. As the old adage goes, you cannot pour from an empty cup. I take care to remember this as well; how am I to serve patients if I have not first served myself? Many of us spend a fair portion of our day thinking about and caring for others; now, who takes care of you? 22.01.2022 I had a patient just yesterday say that they had never heard anyone say anything negative about acupuncture. Everyone they knew had had a positive experience and experienced good results. It is certainly becoming well known that acupuncture is an incredibly effective treatment for pain relief. Acupuncture has been scientifically proven to promote the release of the bodys own natural pain killers. This coupled with Acupunctures mechanism for promoting circulation to an a...ffected area means that your body heals faster while managing its own pain without the use of pain medications. 21.01.2022 Having acupuncture treatments weekly for 12 weeks leading up to an IVF cycle has been shown to reap the most positive results. This is shown here in this diagram in the first column marked Whole System Acupuncture TCM combined with IVF alongside IVF treatments alone. While more research is needed, the results of this 2015 study by LE Hullender Rubin et al of 1069 women comparing IVF only, IVF + day of transfer Acupuncture or IVF + 12 sessions of Acupuncture showed higher birth rates (actual babies!) and lower miscarriage rates (biochemical preg/spontaneous abortions) in the Whole System Acupuncture group.
20.01.2022 Studies have shown acupuncture to be effective for the treatment of urinary incontinence. Several controlled investigations find acupuncture safe and effective for reducing the amount of urine leakage and frequency of uncontrolled urine leakage. The investigations reveal that acupuncture outperforms medications and enhances the effectiveness of Kegel exercises and herbal medicines. The treatment should increase ones ability to hold urine, decrease the number of times one uri...nates at night, decrease urinary urgency, and create a smoother urine flow. In addition, patients will usually see an improvement in sexual function over the same period of time. Together with dietary suggestions to eliminate bladder irritants, pelvic exercises and a physical program to retrain your bladder out of its bad habits, treatments will help you to regain a sense of control once again. 20.01.2022 "Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the PAST and IMAGINE their world anew. THIS one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next. We can choose to WALK through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks + DEAD ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us. OR we can walk through lightly, with little luggage... READY to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it." ~ Arundhati Roy

19.01.2022 The term "anti-inflammatory diet" gets thrown around in nutrition conversations a lot these days. But why is inflammation bad for us, anyway? And what does food have to do with it? Inflammation is a part of your bodys normal response to infection or injury. Its when your damaged tissue releases chemicals that tell white blood cells to start repairing. But sometimes, inflammation is low-grade, spread throughout the body, and chronic. This chronic inflammation can do damage t...o your body. It can play a role in the buildup of plaque in your arteries that can up your risk of heart disease and stroke. Its also associated with a higher risk of cancer, diabetes and other chronic conditions. How your food can help or hurt The choices you make at the grocery store can have an impact on the inflammation in your body. Scientists are still unraveling how food affects the bodys inflammatory processes, but they know a few things. Research shows that what you eat can affect the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP)a marker for inflammationin your blood. That could be because some foods like processed sugars help release inflammatory messengers that can raise the risk of chronic inflammation. Other foods like fruits and veggies help your body fight against oxidative stress, which can trigger inflammation. So where do you start? Read the article below to find out what comprises an anti-inflammatory eating plan.
19.01.2022 I was so pleased to receive this email from a patient I am currently working with who is going through her first round of IVF. It is very satisfying and rewarding work.

17.01.2022 Unsurprisingly, many of us have been feeling more than a little stressed lately! But stress manifests itself differently from one body to the next, so how might seeing an acupuncturist help you with your own stress? At your appointment, an acupuncturist makes a Chinese Medicine diagnosis based on your presenting symptoms and also through looking at your tongue and taking your pulse. Things such as your sleep patterns, physical aches and pains, digestive problems and your emo...tions will be discussed to see if what you're presenting with may actually have been triggered by your stress levels. You will be offered treatment information and advice that will help you to better understand your body and an acupuncturist may offer strategies to bring down your stress levels and reduce the load on your body. This may include recommendations for specific lifestyle adaptations and relaxation techniques. See more
16.01.2022 When we take care of ourselves, we are able to better take care of the people we love. When we are in a state of balance, our bodies stay healthy on their own, without much effort on our part. When we are out of balance, our bodies signal alarms. These alarms can show up as fatigue, pain, hormonal symptoms or anxiety/depression to name just a few. I believe that for a self-care routine, acupuncture and Chinese medicine is second to none. It is designed to be a preventative me...dicine. Numerous studies about how effective acupuncture is in relieving stress, including ones showing how acupuncture lowers the stress hormone cortisol and stimulates the release of endorphins in the brain. Acupuncture is also very helpful with getting good sleep! Studies show that acupuncture improves sleep activity and quality, as well as melatonin production. Patients receiving acupuncture fall asleep faster, are less active at night and are less stressed. Thats a good start to a self care plan. If everyone listened for these signals and took action when they happenedfor example, made a diet change or started going to bed earlier there would be a lot less chronic disease in our society. 16.01.2022 What you feed yourself has a direct effect on your mental health. Nourishing our brain will benefit us even if we dont suffer from a mental illness. Here are some easy additions that will help your brain to flourish and hopefully reduce that foggy head, poor memory and feelings of being overwhelmed and out of control. EAT MORE HEALTHY FATS: Good sources of omega-3 fatty acids are salmon, herring, sardines, and anchovies, as well as meat and eggs, flaxseeds, walnuts, and om...ega-3 fish-oil supplements GET MORE PROTEIN: A healthy brain depends on the steady creation of neurotransmitters. The basic building blocks for these transmitters are amino acids that come from the protein in our diets. Experts suggest that 20 to 25 percent of our diets should come from high-quality protein like meat, eggs, dairy, beans, and legumes. And its a good idea to begin the day with a solid helping of protein. AVOID SUGAR HIGHS: The brain has an enormous need for glucose, and our blood supplies this essential fuel as it circulates through the brain. This supply needs to be slow and steady, without the peaks and valleys caused by simple sugars found in junk food. Stick to the complex carbohydrates found in vegetables, whole grains, and many fruits. BUFFER STRESS WITH B AND C VITAMINS: Stress bombards even the most ordinary lives, both from the outside a hectic schedule, an angry coworker, commuting to work in heavy traffic and from the inside, such as when our bodies battle infection and illness. A steady stream of cortisol and other stress hormones can weaken neurotransmitters. Protect them with vitamins C and B especially niacin, or B3 which together can regulate and protect these neurotransmitters. #naturalmentalhealth #foodsformentalhealth #foodstonourishthebrain
10.01.2022 Parents..... Dont let your daughters put up with period pain and heavy bleeding. No matter what anyone tells you, period pain and heavy bleeding is not normal. Do not think that because you had menstrual issues, and had to put up with them, that your daughter does too. There is lots that can be done naturally, without the intervention of contraceptive pills. Left too long, some disease states can cause internal damage, long term ongoing health issues, and also affect a yo...ung womans future fertility. If your daughter is suffering from period pain, heavy bleeding and other associated menstrual issues, it is time to seek some help. #yinstudio #periodpainisnotnormal #heavybleedingisnotnormal #notawaytolivelife #seeanexpert #acupuncturewomenshealth
10.01.2022 Leg Cramps? Muscle cramps and tight muscles? University of Bridgeport in Connecticut researchers found that eating a medium baked potato (with skin on) reduces painful muscle spasms by as much as 65%. They believe that potatoes' unique combo of phytonutrients and being rich in potassium combine to help proper muscle contraction and stay fully relaxed when not in use. That's easy. Time to give it a 2 or 3 day experiment to see if it works?
10.01.2022 We have come to think of our bodies as machines. We see our GP as a mechanic whose job is to find the broken parts and fix them. For at least a century this has been our primary metaphor for talking about sickness and health, about how our bodies work and break down. Unfortunately for complex issues like womens health and hormones, this approach has its problems. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine helps return the body back to a natural balanced environment. It is about encou...raging strength and resilience in the body. When you turn your focus away from fixing whats wrong and instead towards supporting and strengthening whats right, nature can then take over to repair whats wrong. 08.01.2022 Almost two years ago a middle-aged man came to see me with severe shoulder pain. He told me that he had suffered from this for 6 years. He previously had 5 cortisone injections and 2 operations, none of which solved the problem of his shoulder. After his fifth session of acupuncture, his shoulder pain had completely cleared. The result of the treatment is no surprise - I see it regularly. Once you give your body the right conditions, it can heal itself very quickly. 07.01.2022 Today, June 21st, is Winter Solstice. It marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. Seasonal changes and shifts are important themes in Chinese medicine. Youve surely seen the symbol of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang is the basis of Chinese Medicine, a concept of dualism - where opposite and seemingly contrary forces are actually complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world. The winter solstice exemplifies this philosophy. Today, Yin wi...ll be at its peak. It is the shortest day of the year and the longest night of the year. The solstice brings forth the Yin (the earths movement toward increasing darkness) transition to Yang (the earths movement toward increasing light). In this exact moment of the transition, there is believed to be a mysterious blending of the yin and yang that opens the possibility of new creation and rebirth. Here, the seeds of Yang will begin to grow, and the days will incrementally grow a little longer. However, winter is still considered Yin time. This is a time of stillness to sit deep within ourselves and embrace introspection. Ironically, the unshackling of restrictions in Queensland brings forth Yang-type activity. We have a million things to do, people to see, shopping to do etc. This extroverted expenditure of energy is the opposite of what we need at this time of year so please exercise some restraint. May this winter solstice be a reminder to honour your mind, body, and spirit. Make time for self-reflection, take a rest when you need it, nourish yourself with warming soups and stews, try mindfulness activities like breathing exercises and meditation, and give thanks to the people and things in which we are grateful.
06.01.2022 Do you have a spring in your step this Spring?? If not, why not! If we dont change, then nothing changes. If you dam a river, the water stops flowing, the water turns stagnant and becomes full of slime and dead material. Humans can also suffer stagnation, which then results in conditions such as pain, increased pain, fatigue, mental health issues, and a whole range of illnesses. This is why it is so important to get the body, and the mind moving again. It is literally li...ke breaking down the dam wall and letting the river flow again. It wont happen overnight, but like a river that is allowed to flow, the body starts to flourish and return to its normal state of health and vitality again. When stagnation in the body is cleared, it results in more energy, more nutrients getting to where they are needed, more oxygen and a clear, calm mind free of clutter. Chinese Medicine is the best treatment there is to deal with stagnation and a general feeling of malaise. Why not talk to Cathy at Yin Studio to see how Chinese Medicine and acupuncture could help you get that Spring in your step again. www.yinstudio.com/book-now See more
06.01.2022 Patients often ask me why I got into Chinese Medicine. In short, I loved the fact that it has existed for around 4,000 years yet this ancient natural therapy is such an effective medicine to apply in everyday life. Especially with our current way of life causing many of our modern health problems prolonged sitting, staring at computer screens, long work hours, unhealthy diet, high stress, hormonal imbalances, lack of sleep Sometimes the solution is as simple as finding a healthy balance, focussing on what we do to, and put into, our body, and resetting. That’s what Chinese Medicine is all about and it works so well - I see amazing results every single day.
06.01.2022 So many women put up with debilitating hormonal imbalances every month. Symptoms like fluid retention, bloating and weight gain, increased appetite, breast swelling and tenderness and mood changes. The good news is that you dont have to put up with this. It can be fixed completely, not covered up with bandaids like oral contraception, but actually fixed by working with your own bodys natural resources to regain the correct balance. Thankfully women are starting to wake up t...o the fact that we dont have to put up with this any more. Especially if you are considering starting a family at some time in the future, its a good idea to get this sorted well in advance. 06.01.2022 The connection between stress and infertility has long been a controversial topic in reproductive medicine. Though there are studies that show an increase in stress-related cortisol levels that affect pregnancy outcomes, it is often hugely overlooked. From a Chinese Medicine perspective, stress can be a BIG game changer. Any emotional disturbance will have a direct functional and physiological impact on the Liver. Stress will block the free flow of energy to the pelvic regi...on. This can translate to inconsistent ovulation, performance issues, poor sleep, inconsistent sex and more. If you have ever heard of infertile couples falling pregnant when they were not actively trying, it is likely due to the emotional barriers being reduced. Supporting the parasympathetic nervous system is important when trying to conceive. If you would like to talk more about how Chinese Medicine can help to improve your fertility outcomes, why not book in for a free 15 minute consultation with Cathy at Yin Studio, Indooroopilly. www.yinstudio.com/book-now See more
05.01.2022 Get out into nature this weekend. Forest bathing has been shown in studies to have very beneficial effects both mentally and physically. Do some deep breathing and enjoy the feeling of a circuit breaker.
03.01.2022 Intrauterine insemination, or IUI, is a common step on the fertility journey. In this procedure, a processed sperm sample is inserted directly into the uterus, allowing a greater quantity of sperm to meet an egg in the fallopian tubes by bypassing the need for travel through the cervix. An IUI cycle is frequently assisted by medications which encourage development of follicles and trigger ovulation. Couples often choose IUI because it is both less expensive and less invasive ...than IVF. An IUI cycle can work well for situations such as less than ideal cervical mucus, the need for sperm donation, issues with sperm motility, or erectile dysfunction. Overall success rates for one IUI cycle are about 15-20%, or as high as 40% when fertility medications are used during the cycle. Including acupuncture and Chinese medicine in your fertility efforts can increase these chances even more. A 2012 study comparing standard IUI to IUI plus acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine found that the group receiving Chinese medicine had success rates of 65.5%, compared to 39.4% in the standard group.
03.01.2022 I love my houseplants and love to move them around from room to room to change things up a bit. Now heres a plan of how to get the best out of their placement.
02.01.2022 ! While many women are told pregnancy is not possible after 40 or IVF is the only way, Grace is proof that believing in your body and doing the work to change fertility is actually possible! ... Grace’s Story : I entered Cathy’s office a few weeks before my 41st birthday following two miscarriages in the proceeding six months. My husband and I were determined to conceive naturally, and did not want to use any interventions such as IUI or IVF despite being recommended to do so. We had conceived naturally six years earlier, and knew it was possible. I had a deep-seated belief that my body was out of balance. Cathy believed the same. I committed to weekly acupuncture, daily herbs, nutritional changes, stress reduction, and was open to trusting that we would become pregnant. Through this time, Cathy was my guide, and just over six months later we became pregnant. I continued weekly acupuncture and herbs along with eating in the way that Chinese Medicine promotes to nourish a pregnancy. I am now 36 weeks pregnant with a baby girl due in December. We can’t thank Cathy enough for her support and knowledge through this journey! See more
