23.01.2022 We have some new arrivals this week, and here is the handsome Cock responsible for the little ones

14.01.2022 Artichokes, all different shapes and sizes

13.01.2022 So... Asparagus Its a plant that we already have in the garden, and the one we have is going great, in its 3rd year and we have started harvesting shoots off it this year. Now, after tasting how good these ones are compared to store bought we are going to go big and plant out 60-70 more in a bed at the bottom of the garden. But Asparagus is not cheap, especially for 2-3yr old's. So I went to the garden shop and bought 4 of these little posts, 3x Green and 1x purple Asparagus.... At first glance they look to be one plant in each pot but taking them out of the pot and removing the potting mix you find they are lots of little seedlings growing together. So Grace and I re-potted these little ones into tubes left over from our native planting in Autumn. End result is 70-80 little Asparaguses kicking along in their own post. We will look after them and grow them on for a year and then plant them out with a thick dressing of compost in the lower garden next year. Each pot of seedlings was $4, so a good buy, if I could have found seed or kept some seed from our 3yr old plant this might have been cheaper, but I am a month ahead with the seedlings. The current price is about 19kg for Asparagus at the garden basket in town so it could be a good little cash crop in 3-4 years time. Stay tuned for an update next year :)

12.01.2022 The purple artichokes are starting to come out, now we just need to learn how to cook them...

01.01.2022 Supplying the bees, hoverflies, parasitic wasps and other helpful insects with some nectar is a great way to help get on top of bug problems in the garden, at the end of the garden beds we have planted a mix of flowering plants. Borage is great and self seeds well, there is some coriander that has been left to flower, Californian poppies and some cornflower that is just starting to come out. Don't bee in a hurry to cut off or pull out your coriander, parsley, rocket or other plants once they have started to flower. Go out on a sunny day and see all the insects making the new flowers home.
