20.01.2022 BAKING SATURDAY The Black Forest Cake originates from Germany - Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, literally "Black Forest Cherry-torte. This cake is fluffy and moist, with light clouds of whipped cream, rich chocolate cake soaked with cherry syrup and lots of fresh cherries. It doesn't need any fancy ingredients which makes it so doable for any occasions.... INGREDIENTS For the cake: Sour cream 60g Buttermilk 118g 2 small eggs Coffee 177g Vegetable oil 88g Vanilla extract 1 teaspoon All purpose flour 180g Caster sugar 180g Cocoa powder 50g Baking powder 2g Baking soda 7g Salt 1 teaspoon For Decoration: Thickened cream 400g Caster sugar 30g Canned cherries in syrup 1 bar of bittersweet chocolate 1. Preheat your oven at 175C. Butter and flour a cake pan (I'm using a 15cm one - double the amount of the ingredients if using a larger sized pan). Sift together all the dry ingredients into a bowl and whisk to combine. 2. Likewise, add the wet ingredients into a large bowl and whisk together. Then pour the well mixed wet ingredients to the dry. 3. Whisk to combine. Make sure the batter is nice and smooth with no dry lumps of flour. Then pour the mixture into your cake pan and bake for about 55 minutes at 175C (or until a toothpick inserted in the centre comes out clean). 4. Allow time for cake to cool after taking it out of the oven. Then slice the cake into two layers. Make sure the cake is completely cooled before icing (you can store it in the fridge to make this process faster)! 5. Whip the cold thickened cream and sugar until soft peaks form. Brush or spoon some cherry syrup onto the cake layers. 6. Cover the first layer in whipped cream and place on as many cherry pieces as you would like (I went a bit crazy). 7. Then add another layer of whipped cream to cover the cherries completely. 8. Add the second cake layer, then cover the cake in a layer of whipped cream. Smooth the side and top with a spatula. 9. Make some chocolate shavings with a knife or vegetable peeler. 10. Gently press some chocolate shavings onto the sides and place some in the centre of the cake. Finish the cake with some whipped cream and cherries to decorate. Enjoy~

16.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday: A productive study tip. Do you easily get distracted while studying? Although you are sitting in the study room, you can't help but spend a couple hours on your phone before snap back into determination. As time goes by, you find yourself burned out, but in fact you have not done anything for a day. You have a very rigorous course choice this semester, you have to be productive, but you failed to do that every single day. Don't worry, the Pomodoro ...Technique can help you to manage your time better and improve your learning efficiency. The Pomodoro method () is a time management method developed in the late 1980s by Francesco Cirillo who named system Pomodoro which means tomato in Italian. The Pomodoro is a fluid system designed to help you produce higher quality work in a shorter amount time. You start out by deciding on a task, and estimate the amount of time that it will take you. Take a three-hour task as an example, in theory it would take you six Pomodoros. Then you work for those 25 minutes with absolutely no distractions, or you have to restart the Pomodoro. But after that hyper-focused work, you get reward yourself with a 5-minute break. For cycles of this pattern of twenty five- five minutes, and you can take a long break 15 to 30 minutes. You never know how much time you really have until you start to use it! Hope everyone can have a productive semester!

15.01.2022 Wellbeing Wednesday: A short guide to Hatha Yoga! Good afternoon everyone!! With classes mostly online and all, it is important that you regularly stretch your muscles that probably have stiffened a lot from crouching in front of the computer screen the whole day. ... ACYA ANU brings you a very short but helpful guide to Hatha Yoga!! Simply speaking, in Hatha Yoga, you maintain one position for a longer period of time - often around 3 minutes. This gives more time for blood to circulate from head to toe and your stiff muscles to loosen up! You will feel amazingly refreshed just by following the three poses listed below! Remember, the most important thing is to BREATHE!!! When you're in pain (which will grow to be pleasant, don't worry!), you will find yourself holding your breath. If you don't breathe, you may feel dizzy or even hurt yourself! Breathe in and breathe out!! !! - Cobra pose 1. Lie face down and with both feet flat against the ground. 2. Place hands next to your chest and with elbows tight against your body. 3. Press floor with both hands and slowly lift your upper body. Make sure your shoulders are pressed down away from your ears. 4. If you can, rest your head towards the back. - Revolved head-to-knee pose 1. Sitting up with legs spread out, bend one knee and push your foot close to your inner thigh, top of the foot facing the ground. 2. Spread your other leg out so that your knees align with each other . 3. Slowly bend down and put your elbow in front of the spread-out leg, and grasp your toe in a way that your pinky finger points upwards. 4. Slowly bring down your other arm next to your ear and grasp the toes. 5. Twist your body outward, as if your bent elbow is pushing your knee in. - Reclining hero pose 1. Sit up with both legs bent toward the back, your toes facing the back and the top of your feet flat on the ground. 2. Slowly lie down, elbows touching floor first and then shoulders. There will naturally be a gap between your lower back and the floor. 3. Spread your arms straight above your head.

03.01.2022 Motivational Tuesday Good morning Here’s a sweet Chinese proverb and romantic legend to help you feel more motivated on Tuesday.... describes people in fate, no matter how far apart, will finally meet. The Covid-19 pandemic has reshaped our personal relationships in unprecedented ways, social distancing measures have isolated us from our friends and wider communities. Many single people may feel more alone in this crisis than ever before, and many couples separate by travel ban. Hope everyone can meet together the person whom you miss most soon. Today is Double Seventh Festival () also known as a Chinese Valentine's Day. It falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month on the Chinese calendar. It’s based on a romantic legend about a weaver girl and an ox herd. There once was a young, poor, but kind-hearted cowherd called Niulang, and an old ox. The ox actually was once the god of cattle, but downgraded as he had violated the law of heaven. Niulang once saved the ox when it was sick. In order to show its gratitude, the old ox helped Niulang get acquainted with Zhinü (a fairy, the seventh daughter of a goddess and the Jade Emperor) when she escaped from her boring life in heaven to look for fun on earth. Zhinü soon fell in love with Niulang and they got married without the knowledge of the goddess. Niulang and Zhinü lived a happy life together; Niulang worked in the field while Zhinü did weaving at home. After a few years passed, they had two children, one boy and one girl. However, the Goddess of Heaven (Zhinü's mother) found out that Zhinü, a fairy girl, had married a mere mortal. The goddess was furious and sent celestial soldiers to bring Zhinü back. Niulang was very upset when he found his wife was taken back to heaven. Then his ox asked Niulang to kill it and put on its hide, so he would be able to go up to heaven to find his wife. Crying bitterly, he killed the ox, put on the skin, and carried his two beloved children off to heaven to find Zhinü. Just before he caught up with Zhinü the goddess of heaven took out her hairpin and created a huge river between them, and they were separated forever by the river that later became known as the Milky Way. Heartbroken, he and his children could only weep bitterly. However, their love moved all the magpies to take pity on them, and they flew up into heaven to form a bridge over the river, so Niulang and Zhinü could meet on the magpie bridge. The goddess was also moved by their love, so she allowed them ameeting on the magpie bridge on that day every year (the seventh day of the seventh lunar month). And our virtual language exchange today is at 3pm.

03.01.2022 Welcome again to cooking with ACYA ANU! Tonight we have arguably one of the most popular ISO foods - homemade banana bread! This recipe is easy to follow, it uses those old bananas you have at the bottom of your fruit bowl, and it tastes so good! This recipe is taken from Sunbeam and has been tried and tested by my Mum and myself! ... Ingredients: 180g butter, room temperature, chopped (I just melt mine in the microwave) 1 cups raw sugar (I prefer caster sugar, but you can use any sugar except for icing sugar) 2 eggs 2 cups self raising flour teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon (you can change this depending on your preferences I like a lot of cinnamon in my banana bread!) teaspoon nutmeg cup buttermilk (you can use normal milk. If you have lemon juice or white vinegar, combine 1tbsp of either option to 1 cup of regular milk to make buttermilk!) 1 teaspoon vanilla essence 1 cups of very ripe mashed banana PRO TIP: roast your bananas in the oven at 180c for 15 min (or until they are soft and juice is leaking out of them) this makes your bananas extra sweet, and is especially helpful if you don’t have ripe bananas! Method: Preheat oven to 180c. Grease and line a cake pan (can be any size/shape you want we don’t need to be fancy). Don’t forget to sift your dry ingredients (flour, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg) to make sure there are no lumps! Mix the butter and sugar until well combined. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well between each addition. Add your sifted dry ingredients and combined buttermilk/milk and vanilla. Add your mashed bananas and mix until combined. You can use a mixer for all of this, or you can just hand mix everything either option works (just make sure you mix it thoroughly if you’re doing it by hand!) Pour mixture into prepared tin and bake for about 40 minutes or until it’s cooked. Test with a skewer/fork to see if it is cooked through (it should come back with only light crumbs on it) Allow cake to cool in pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool. Again, you can do what I do and eat it straight away and burn your tongue, but this is not recommended. You’re done! Feel free to add whatever you like I add chocolate chips, and sometimes I put swirls of Nutella and/or peanut butter through it before baking. You can also add nuts, and even dried fruits could work well! The choices are endless, so go bananas! Photos: my attempt to write ACYA in chocolate chips failed, but here is the final product!
