25.01.2022 Superannuation guarantee amnesty On 6 March 2020 the government introduced a superannuation guarantee amnesty. The amnesty allows employers to disclose and pay previously unpaid super guarantee charges, including nominal interest, that they owe their employees, for quarter(s) starting from 1 July 1992 to 31 March 2018, without incurring the administration component ($20 per employee per quarter) or Part 7 penalty. In addition, payments of SGC made to the ATO after 24 May 2018... and before 11:59 PM 7 September 2020 will be tax deductible. Employers who have already disclosed unpaid SGC to the ATO between 24 May 2018 and 6 March 2020 dont need to apply or lodge again. Employers who come forward from 6 March 2020 need to apply for the amnesty. To apply for the amnesty, you must: download the approved SG amnesty form (XLS 613KB) (https://www.ato.gov.au///SPR/downloads/sg_amnesty_form.xls) If you lodge your amnesty forms to the ATO, you must make the payment to the ATO. Dont pay the amount of SGC owing direct to your employees funds or to a clearing house. The ATO will continue to conduct reviews and audits to identify employers not paying their employees SG. If we identify these employers before they come forward, they will not be eligible for the benefits of the amnesty.

13.01.2022 Claiming Donations in your tax return You can only claim a tax deduction for gifts or donations for organisations that are registered as a Deductible Gift Recipient or DGR. You can check whether they are registered on the ABN Lookup site. Type in the charitys name and enter. Then select the correct charity by clicking on the blue ABN. Scroll down the page until you get to the Deductible Gift Recipient Status. This will then provide the answer as to whether they are registered as a DGR or not.

10.01.2022 Tax Office to return money from inactive super accounts from Friday Its rare to get a cash injection without having to lift a finger but thats exactly what will be happening to millions of us within days. Surprise cash payouts are about to land in the accounts of millions of Australians and yours could be in line too. From Friday, an estimated 2.6 million Australians could find a welcome gift from the Australian Taxation Office in their everyday bank account or their su...perannuation account. Its all thanks to some new changes to superannuation laws, designed to reunite people with their lost super. In a nutshell, the changes mean people with inactive super accounts with balances of less than $6000 can now have that balance automatically transferred by the ATO into their active super account. However, if the balance is less than $200, that sum will automatically be sent to their bank account and if a person is aged over 65, the cash will be sent to their bank account regardless of the total. The law change means people with multiple super accounts they may have forgotten about, such as those who have started new jobs who were automatically signed up to a default fund without realising it, will no longer lose out on their hard-earned money. Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia deputy chief executive officer Glen McCrea said those who are set to receive a payment will receive a notification from the ATO once the cash has been paid, with most payments to be made by the end of November. Its a fantastic opportunity to engage with any lost or unclaimed super that individual members may have after all, its your money. The move is the result of the Treasury Laws Amendment (Protecting Your Superannuation Package) Act 2019, which means super providers are now required to report and pay accounts with a balance of less than $6000 to the ATO.

08.01.2022 Each tax time, there are always a few tax myths floating around. One of the most common? That everyone can automatically claim work-related expenses up to a certain value. Read on as the ATO set the record straight Myth: Everyone can claim $300 for work-related expenses, including $150 for work clothes or laundry, and 5,000km worth of car expenses. Fact: Not quite true! Theres no automatic entitlement in order to claim a work-related expense, you must have actually s...pent the money. And while some claims dont require up-front evidence, you must be able to demonstrate the expenses relate to earning your income and how you calculated the claims. If youre not sure what you can claim or how to calculate your deductions, read our info at www.ato.gov.au//Income-and-deduct/Deductions-you-can-claim or chat with a registered tax agent.

02.01.2022 From 1st July, the new minimum repayment threshold for study and training loans has been lowered to $45,881.00. This means that employees who earn $45,881 or above and have a study or training debt will now need to make compulsory payments for the first time. If this is the case, then you may need to fill out a new Tax File Number Declaration and declare yes at number 9. ... Give the new form to your employer and they will withhold additional tax to cover any compulsory repayments. This may avoid receiving a large tax debt at the end of the financial year. For further information or to view the new rates go to ato.gov.au/rates/HELP,-TSL-and SFSS-repayment-thresholds-and-rates/
