20.01.2022 I'm now a "steeple architect"... "After 144 years, the steeple and cross atop Welsey Uniting Church in Anson Street has been given a makeover - and a hugely impressive one at that. An upgrade to the steeple, adorned with a copper cross, was finished on Wednesday as the newest part of the Orange skyline. Rain and the coronavirus pandemic meant putting the renovation together had taken longer than anticipated, but Reverend Andrew Cunningham said it had coincided well with the c...hurch building being shut due to restrictions. It’ll be quite impressive once the scaffolding comes down ... it’s a bright copper colour and will obviously dull a bit but it looks good, Reverend Cunningham said. The $200,000 project had half its funding tipped in by the NSW Heritage Council, while the other half has come out of the church community. It’s been in planning for a couple of years, but it’ll be well worth it, the steeple will last another 150 years so it’s incredible value for money, Reverend Cunningham said. He had the chance to inspect the new cross atop the church before it was put in place, along with the steeple architect James Nicholson and community member Ray Manchester. This is the first stage of the project, with the church set for internal renovations from October to completely re-do the interior. Reverend Cunningham said carpet and pews would be re-done and a lick of paint added to the entrance. The technology in the church is also due for a makeover, with lighting and audio-visual upgrades to come into play, which will help in the wait for a coronavirus vaccine. We’ve been very cautious, Reverend Cunningham said. We’ve got people from all ages who attend but plenty of people in the more vulnerable category, so we haven’t resumed in-person service yet, we’re still online. The building is closed but the church is open. The internal upgrades are planned for October. It’ll look totally different on the inside once it’s all done, Reverend Cunningham said." See more

18.01.2022 Well, this saga will finally come to a head. Unfortunately even if Council refuse this application it can be overruled by the State Government as it is a Crown application. I hope they don't do that.

17.01.2022 Ashford Roofing's video of the Old Wesley church spire, about to get a new copper skin.

14.01.2022 As an architect who works primarily with historic buildings, the burning of Notre Dame in Paris was particularly shocking. It isn't just an issue for the French people, or for Catholics, such an important building has historic, artistic and cultural value to every human being. I'm glad to hear reports are starting to come out that the damage is not as bad as originally feared, and that the work to the cathedral will be more of a repair than a rebuild. It is also good to know that the building was extensively recorded before the damage in digital point clouds, which will help with the repair work. - https://www.wired.com//the-notre-dame-fire-and-the-futur/

13.01.2022 A little bathroom fitout we did. Not built 100% to the plans but enough to be close.

08.01.2022 After a particularly difficult year it is nice to finally say "Merry Christmas" with hopes of a much better New Year ahead of us all. - Image: One of the stained glass windows at Orange Uniting Church about Christmas

07.01.2022 Well, my internet got knocked out by a close electrical storm in early January and it has been quite the journey since then. I went through three replacement routers, each time being told by the ISP technician that somehow residual current in my machine was frying the new router LAN sockets. That seemed increasingly unlikely with each change and when I found that other computers worked on my network it was time to realise that my network card is what was causing the problem. ...Unfortunately on my build the network card was on the motherboard, so I had to buy a new network card for PCI slot 1 and it arrived today. I was worried about how to put it in after I managed to stuff up my RAM slots last year, but it was a simple plug and play. I had downloaded the driver trying to fix the old one, and this one just worked so beautifully. Answer to prayer. So, I don't have to use a thumb drive to print anymore!

06.01.2022 Going to do my final inspection on this today.

03.01.2022 I've just been advised that Orange Uniting Church have received part of the grant we applied for. So, subject to the church deciding how the scope must change to accommodate the reduced funding, we may be about to reconstruct the spire in copper cladding. Very good news! Unfortunately the news was not good for Holy Trinity Orange who missed out on funding to fix their slate roof.

03.01.2022 It's been a while since I've posted anything. Here's a house addition I am doing in Orange, only at concept stage. Reconstructing the front verandah, and then adding a large living area and courtyard to the rear.

03.01.2022 This is not good news. The NSW Government continue their downgrading of heritage. Goodness knows what the system will look like after this, but they've been starving the office of funds for years already, and now the Office is gone and heritage has been separated from Planning and is going to the Arts. https://www.smh.com.au//vandals-nsw-environment-staff-fear
