21.01.2022 These times are certainly challenging. I know a lot of people have struggled and hope you are all receiving the support you require. There are organisations that are here to help, so please make sure you reach out if required. There is one group that I have had particular contact with that I would like to focus on in this post, our teenagers. As a psychologist who works with teenagers regularly and has the research to back it up, I know that protective factors for teenagers ...include, participating in recreational activities, belonging to a group, having positive contact with healthy peers and having positive cultural experiences. Our experiences with COVID 19 have resulted in our teenagers not being able to go to school, having team sports and individual sports suspended and having other recreational activities stopped. This has caused a negative impact on our young people’s mental health including an increase in suicidal thoughts. Moving forward, it is vital those with the power and capacity ensure young people have the ability to participate in recreational activities to enhance their emotional well-being. I know there are multiple factors that need to be taken into account when activities return to the public in these times, however it is vital we make decisions that support and help our young people. We need to stand together and support our teenagers. Let’s ensure we do all we can to provide opportunities for young people to be connected, belong to a group and participate in activities that bring enjoyment to all!
