25.01.2022 If you’ve had a big week or a difficult time of late and need a little opportunity to unwind that doesn’t require buckets of money, there is a lovely offer for you tomorrow from 10am - 2pm in our Food Relief Hub at Gumbramorra Hall...

25.01.2022 Today marks the mid-point of History Week 2020. At Addi Road we are also middle of cataloging some wonderful historic photos that were anonymously donated to our Living Museum program. Check out these beauties from what we are calling our Shoebox Series (they were dropped into our office in an old shoebox). They were probably taken in the early 1980s, full of the creative freedom, and the slightly more relaxed approach to health and safety, of the era. They answer this year...'s History Week theme: History, what is it good for? by reminding us of the role community centres like Addi Road play in the history of a neighbourhood, of a city, of a nation - safe places of play and collaboration for children, artists, environmentalism and multiculturalism. Please get in touch if you can identify any of the people in the pictures. #HistoryWeek2020

22.01.2022 Prior to Covid-19 things were simpler. But the arrival of the virus and the issues it raised around everything from safe handling of food to concerns over how best to manage social distancing among our volunteers and customers forced us into using plastic bags as a health and safety requirement at Addi Roads Food Pantry Marrickville (and our new store at Camperdown). Weve been unhappy about this and are looking to reduce our dependency. Basically, we want to take a s...tep back towards saving the planet, as well as saving our fellow human beings! To do that, we need a business partner out there who can help us with a regular donation of paper bags about 8,000 BROWN KRAFT PAPER BAGS PER MONTH size F8/8F (28cm x 35cm) to be precise!!! You will be assisting us to reduce our carbon foot print and be boosting your companys contribution to sustainability as well as supporting our food rescue and food security programs. And we will all be happier, healthier and, yes, still safe in how we deliver our food rescue service to the community. 8,000 BROWN KRAFT BROWN PAPER BAGS SIZE F8/8F (28CM X 35CM) PER MONTH if you can help us, please call Addi Road Food Pantry Manager Damien Moore on our office number - (02) 9569 7633

21.01.2022 This weekend is the last chance for you to catch the first post-Covid performance at the Greek Theatre at Addi Road. 20.01.2022 Mayor Darcy Byrnes announcement this morning that the Inner West Council has decided to convert the Summer Hill depot into a reuse centre for non-government-organisations like Reverse Garbage and The Bower Reuse & Repair Centre is welcome news for us all. Both organisations will no doubt be rejuvenated by the news of their new premises and the move. We wish them well and look forward to visiting once Reverse Garbage and The Bower have re-established themselves at their new... home. We are especially happy they can remain just down the road in the Inner West. Its great, too, that the Inner West Council has stepped up to help struggling businesses like Reverse Garbage and The Bower and that the IWC are further promoting environmentally-minded practices in other ways across our community. Lets keep working together on this important vision. As a charity, Addison Road Community Organisation has been unable to provide the ongoing levels of support and rental subsidies that operations like Reverse Garbage and The Bower have required. In addition, significant construction works remain unresolved for each building due to a lack of funding. Thanks to the Inner West Council creating a new reuse centre especially for them, Addi Road will now be better able to develop workable and sustainable solutions sensitive to the heritage-site demands of the Centre here while Reverse Garbage and The Bower are provided with the perfect heavy-usage, purpose-built location and opportunity for their own regeneration. Its a happy solution for everyone. Addi Road feels confident that our centrally-located and brilliant community site here in Marrickville will attract new partners who can work with us on rejuvenating and renovating the historic buildings, whilst bringing fresh perspectives on sustainability and the environment. We welcome the opportunity to make our community a better and more dynamic place for everyone.

20.01.2022 FACES OF ADDI ROAD: SEBASTIAN Colombian classical musician and clarinetist, Sebastian, arrived in Australia seven months ago to study and teach music. In the wake of Covid-19 he encountered considerable difficulties as a temporary visa-holder who is not entitled to any benefits or support during the crisis. Right now I feel that the music of Brahms and this community [at Addi Road] break me free into some other feeling. I was here alone. This community help me. But it is abo...ut a lot more than food. I can see that Brahms and this community bring into my life the same things. They change my life. They make me go deep with people. They make me go deep into the music. 20.01.2022 Christmas Card from a father in Marrickville... Dear Mr Morrison, I have experienced life on Newstart for substantial passages of time prior to Jobseeker and the Corona supplement era. I am a parent of three teenage children, separated from my former partner but still having my children almost half the time. I fought hard as an unemployed person in my late 50s, to become employed again. It took a good year - mean, depressing, brutal. As a parent there were times I felt ashame...d. As a human being, times I felt crushed. The amount I was required to live on, let alone seek work was completely impossible. The thought of people going back to that fills me with old feelings of fear and sadness. Most unemployed people I have met want to work. Help them to help themselves. Don't cut the rate. Don't cut them down. #addiroad #ACOSS #RaisetheRateforGood #CovertheBasics #ScottMorrison See more

19.01.2022 Addison Road Community Centre is a special place, managed for community use and enjoyment and open 364 days a year. One of the many free services we provide is access to public toilets. These are used by people walking their dogs, taking kids to and from martial arts or drama classes, Food Pantry and Sunday markets customers, theatre-goers, people shopping for recycled furniture and craft materials, community gardeners, compostors and everyday visitors, along with the many a...rtists, musicians, social service providers and others whose work is based at Addi Road. The provision of good public toilets for all these many users costs a lot, but it's not something we can skip, which is why we applied for Community Builders Partnership funding to upgrade them, through our State Member Jo Haylen's office. Our grant application was called Skip to the Loo. We'd like to thank everyone who supported our application by voting for us in the Summer Hill Community Builders Partnership survey that closed yesterday. We hope to share news that we've been successful soon! Jo Haylen

19.01.2022 FACES OF ADDI ROAD - GAYLENE Gaylene is standing outside the Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown organising a small group of shoppers on opening day. They watch the speeches, the ribbon cutting, enjoy a free pink-iced donut. All of them have hand-sewn masks on. Gaylenes face is well-masked too. She keeps an eye on the road for a few more friends. The 470 bus stops right out the front of the Food Pantry at 31 Pyrmont Bridge Road, Camperdown. But she doesnt want them to go saili...ng by and miss the place. She says the opening of Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown is, A great idea. A lot of people will use it once they know its here." .... She likes the area around Camperdown and the other side of Glebe where I live. Its a pretty good place. Theres a lot of low-income people around here, so they will really appreciate having the Food Pantry. But you know, I see people in private accommodation that are struggling. Theres people in nice houses and they are finding it hard even to pay their mortgage. Gaylene feels sorry for them. Shes used to seeing other people struggle around her. This time its different, yet still the same. It almost feels like a good thing. Theres a lot of people living round here who have fallen on hard times. I met some people in the last couple of months who thought they were better than us and now theyre the same people who are struggling to pay their bills. Its nice. Youre getting to know your neighbours better. The community is better. I know that sounds like a silly thing to say. But its a 100% true. FULL story here.... https://addiroad.org.au/news/gaylene/

13.01.2022 FACES OF ADDI ROAD: KEVIN In the middle of taking Kevins photo, I step backwards and trip over a dog bowl filled with water. I say Jesus! Kevin laughs and says, See, youre on the right track already. Kevin is in the Salvos. He does what he says is called their hotel ministry. All the hotels on a Friday night round here, preaching the Gospel. I do prison work too. And Kariong over here, the youth detention centre. ... He nods and points like these places are right in front of us. Kevin gets around. He found out about the Addi Road Food Pantry Marrickville at his water aerobics class. A lady there volunteers here. She told me all about it. This is my first time here. I heard what she said and thought I must come. And I am sure glad I did! Why is that? Well I worked in finance before the Salvos. Im a pensioner now. And this is fantastic. I spent $13 and I have fruit and vegetables, meat, breakfast, and I have some cans for lunch. And milk! I wasnt expecting that, I really wasnt. Kevin says getting things at that price from Addi Road Food Pantry Marrickvile is a big help. I bump into a lot of people in my travels, so I will be recommending here to them. He seems to know a few people already. A fellow around his age called Bill arrives and says hi to Kevin warmly. A young woman called Cathy stays by his side. Kevin is very friendly in return. If you take my photo can I keep my hat on. If I dont have my hat on people wont recognise me. He does take off his face mask. It fogs my glasses, he explains. 12.01.2022 Around the corner from Addi Road tucked away in a Marrickville industrial back street is one of Australia's finest food success stories. In an area known locally as the hub, the Simmone Logue Fine Food Company has been making beautiful, wholesome food locally for over 17 years. When Covid-19 hit, dramatically affecting their business, the company director looked for a positive response to the crisis and chose to become a proud donor to the Addi Road Food Pantry. Recently Sim...mone, founder and driver of the company, dropped in to check out the Covid food relief operations at Addi Road and she shared her story with us. Simmone cares greatly about supporting what is local and her company tries to source all their ingredients from local growers and manufacturers. Thank you to Simmone and her team for reaching out to us, it really does show that we are stronger together and that local is always best. 12.01.2022 "Ten minutes?! Can we make it five? For such a languid seeming guy, Paul is sure not keen on wasting any time. He apologises and says theyve just got their ticket to go shopping at Addi Road Food Pantry Marrickville. Social distancing and health regs means the numbers of people inside are restricted and you dont want to miss your turn in the line when your number is called. Hes with a group of housemates from Tempe. Theyve nominated him as their spokesperson. Why me? h...e cries. Then he bounces over to nearby bench and says okay. Paul tells me he is from Zimbabwe originally. He and house mates are all Australians he says, but they have the rest of the world in their system: Australian, Chinese Australian, Indian Australian. You know how it is. Theyve come down as a team to shop for their house. We like that its affordable. And its good to shop local, Paul says. And its a charity, so thats good to support. Stopping food going to landfill, helping the environment. I ask Paul if hes a student. He laughs a little and says, Yeah I study. Im a student of life. Then he starts to crack up like its the best joke he has had on himself all day. In fact, he says, he used to be a landscaper. Then he got into making films and documentaries. Now he is a founding member of Treason Flowers, who have contributed content to everyone from SBS to the Art Gallery of NSW and the Antenna Film Festival. Go check out their website, its a pretty cool operation. Paul agrees that the art scene has been hit hard by Covid-19. Lots of people are looking for work and losing their incomes. Especially with no more live concerts. Hes pretty excited about filming a classical music event next week at Sydney Town Hall. Its cause for optimism.... 12.01.2022 Instead of going out eating and drinking to celebrate their friend's birthday, this beautiful crew came to Addi Road today to help out in our Food Pantry and Food Relief Hub. Their muscle and energy were a brilliant boost on a rainy day, reminding us again us that #WeAreStrongerTogether. Happy Birthday, Adam, and many happy returns (really!) to you and Joe, Kristina, Lena, Linly, Darren, Gordon and Ilana.

11.01.2022 People have been telling us how sweet we are for so long we decided to get serious about it and we mean 120 pallets worth of chocolate treats serious!, thanks to a big and very generous donation to us from Heinemann Asia Pacific Pte Ltd. Today and yesterday, Addison Road Community Organisation have been inundated with charities and community groups coming here to pick up boxes of chocolates to pass on to the people they are serving and working with. It’s been especially n...ice to share these treats with organisations and groups that have been working together with us here on site at Addi Road, supporting our community initiatives and their longer term social benefits. At this time of year something as simple as giving out chocolates naturally brings up the notion of gifts and giving more generally, and reminds us how much of a great collaboration of values this place really is and how much unity of spirit we share to get our work done. We hope our friends here enjoy a wonderful end of year and look forward to an even bigger 2021 working together again. Thanks Heinemann for such a big donation; and thanks everyone for dropping by to collect your chocolates. We hope we made your year a little sweeter. 11.01.2022 OPEN HEARTS OPEN THE VAULT As we emerge from lockdown and into the light, an amazing line-up of big-hearted artists is set to donate their time and talent for Addi Road and CrewCare at "Open the Vault" Vintage Poster Exhibition and Live Concerts on the 5th and 6th of December. Most of us know how tough performing artists like musicians and actors have been doing it this year of Covid, but the artists performing at Open the Vault recognise that many of the people who support l...ive acts have been doing it even tougher. Riggers, roadies, technicians, backstage crew of all kinds, already working highly seasonal and often physically punishing jobs have had almost no shows to support - and therefore no money for jam - this year. That's why we are so grateful to all the artists performing on the weekend 5/6 December and to Bartley Melocco for putting his amazing vintage poster collection on show. Their generosity means that revenue from ticket sales can go straight to helping people who need it most, through Addi Road’s no-questions-asked Food Justice program and CrewCare’s mental health and wellbeing support for entertainment industry workers and their families. Check out the incredible line-up below and buy tickets via https://addiroad.org.au/ - DJs Paolo Flores, Lady Chika and Kween G - Adams Hut with Linda Jansen from Wicked Beat Sound System and Adam Cox ex Good Buddha - Fifty Million Beers: George Jones's illegitimate sons Charlie Maclean, Mark Cornwall, Ross Fothringham, Graeme Griffiths & Lochie Dengate - Ilan Kidron from the Potbeleez with Harry Sunderland, Hamish Stuart, Jonathan Zwartz - The PINKS: Reg Mombassa, Andrew Doherty, Continental Robert Susz, Hamish Stuart, Brendan Gallagher & Jonathan Zwartz - Genesis Owusu's Black Dog Jams: Kofi Owusu, Andrew Klippel, Kirin Callinan, Michael Di Francesco & Julian Sudek - La Boheme: our favourite Colombian quartet - Ray Beadle Organ Trio with Clayton Doley and Andrew Dickeson - Friends of El Taller with Justo Diaz and Fernando Coloma - AfroMbollo featuring Yacou Mbaye and Kween G Kibone And if you can't make it, you can still help by buying a SUPPORT TICKET!

10.01.2022 We are serious about health here, and seriously grateful for a third and final (for now!) donation of comfortable cloth face masks made for us by Celia Callow. Addi Road Food Pantry staff and volunteers at both Marrickville and Camperdown are being well looked after, thank you, Celia! #WeAreStrongerTogether

09.01.2022 NSW Health strongly encourages people to wear facemasks when unable to physically distance, particularly in indoor settings to keep everyone safe. Masks are particularly recommended in indoor settings such as on public transport and in places where people congregate, such as places of worship and entertainment areas. Masks should not be worn by young children or anyone who has trouble breathing or who is unable to remove the mask themselves without assistance. For multilingua...l information about using facemasks in various settings, see here. http://ow.ly/zdUv50BhL49 For translated information about how to safely wear facemasks, see here. https://www.dropbox.com//nqfstd/AAB_GqFvOIsLisMzUwTvcSdma They also encourage keeping up our state's high rates of testing, practicing physical distancing and good personal hygiene. 09.01.2022 Alex Smith, the Manager for the Vic on the Park Hotel, dropped by yesterday to give us a cheque for $5,280. The money will go to our food rescue and food security programs, and help us in all the work we are doing with our Food Relief Hub and our two low cost grocery stores, Addi Road Food Pantry Marrickville and Addi Road Food Pantry Camperdown. We gave Alex a tour of our Food Relief Hub and the new kitchen we are building to supply freshly cooked meals as a part of our p...lans for 2021. She was most impressed and happy to see what was going on and the difference donations like those from the Vic really do make. We have to say Vic on the Park Hotel have just been fantastic this year, giving us a ton of support on many levels. It’s been a real community bonding experience for us. Alex says the team at the Vic chose a few local charities to support. It comes from our guests as well at the hotel. It really is a local thing. They all want to do something, especially since Covid-19 hit. Now that things have started coming back, we know there are people out there who are needing extra support to make the come back with us. Alex talks about how live music has really suffered. We’ve started doing seated shows at the Vic, and we’re doing our best to support the local music community too. It’s been such a crazy year. But now, being careful about it, we’re getting back to normal. We just the want to see the community happening and we’re glad to get involved with helping Addi Road do all this amazing work with food as part of that. It really is a community thing for all of us. + YOU can support Addi Road's food rescue and food security programs by donating here: https://addiroad.org.au/donations/donate-now/

04.01.2022 ARMISTICE DAY - NOVEMBER 11 - MARRICKVILLE This is a fitting day to remember that the vibrant Addison Road Community Centre was once a place of enlistment for men volunteering to serve in World War One, in which more than 9 million military and 6 million people died. Addi Road was an Australian army facility from 1916 until 1975, and our Living Museum program has confirmed the details of more than 50 men who enlisted for WWI here, many of them going on to battles in France an...d the Western Front. This research work is part of our 'Anzacs of Addi Road' project, which aims to convey the impacts of the war through the individual experiences of local men, using material such as maps, photos, letters and military records. Biographies of the men will trace the complex web of their movements, originating here and branching out to faraway places in the name of war, adventure and Empire. One of them was George Redman Featherstone. He enlisted at Addison Road on 23 May 1916, aged 25. He travelled to England, France and Belgium and was killed in action in October 1917. More than three years after her son’s death, his mother Emily received a letter from the Australian Imperial Force Base Records Office asking her "whether there are any nearer in blood relations than yourself". The Deceased Soldiers Estates Act 1918 placed mothers at number five on the list of "suitable" next-of-kin relationships for receiving the deceased person's War Medals, after the "widow, eldest surviving son, eldest surviving daughter, father..." #lestweforget2020 The photo is of one of seven World War One period buildings at Addi Road, Drill Hall no. 2, now occupied by the Ultimo Project Studios.

01.01.2022 EVERYDAY WAYS OF BEING Were in Sydney, Australia the nations busiest, most densely populated city. Airplanes yelling their metallic-mouthed roars overhead, cars caught in traffic, people rushing out their front doors, to work, from one appointment to the next Everything is fast-paced and hectic. There isnt enough time, and no ones getting enough sleep. Especially now. In perhaps the most difficult year of our lives, none feel this stress and unsettled energy more than... our children. Its a need that Niv Rajendra answers with her yoga practice, with two different sets of yoga lessons developed for teenagers and for children below the age of 12. With younger-aged children, she works on building skills for focus, but also relaxation. Its important for their brains to be able to switch off, Niv says, discussing how the lives of children and young people these days are so highly stimulated. Using movement, Niv helps the children in her workshops to develop physical coordination, flexibility, and strength in ways that also promote mental, emotional, and spiritual balance. Everything is connected. With teenagers, Niv develops conscious spaces of safety, support, and inclusion. In these workshops, engaging in mindful movement is an avenue into having conversations about self-love, body positivity, and mental health ... 01.01.2022 At the height of panic buying around the country we all remember the empty shelves where the pasta once sat. No one was under more pressure at the time than Barilla Australia who worked around the clock to bring more stock into the country. Their warehouse supplies were stripped bare. As long time food donors to the Food Pantry, we also saw the pressure to maintain supplies through this time. Wanting to maintain their commitment to their community, they offered Addi Road thei...r commercial kitchen for us to make pre-prepared meals that went out to people in need and to health workers. Thank you to Carly and her team for staying with us through the hard times, it really does show that we are stronger together.
