24.01.2022 #SuccessProject contributor Ryan G. reminds us all to look for the small victories: Success to me can take many forms. Usually everyone associates success with... winning, either in sport or another contest form. I was one of these people at one point in my life. I could not be happy if I wasn't the best. I used this to motivate me in everyday training and life. But life has ways to throw curveballs and make you change your understanding of simple things. Almost a year ago I was in the best shape of my life. I felt like I could do anything and wanted to try any workout that was thrown my way. Then a herniated disc in my lower back rendered me incapable of doing the simplest of tasks. I underwent 2 surgeries in December 2012 and was told the road to recovery would not be an easy one. So to make time go by faster I made sure to enjoy the little victories. First I was able to sit up. SUCCESS!! Then I was able to walk to the bathroom. SUCCESS!! Next I was able to walk to the end of the hall. SUCCESS!! Finally got to sleep in my own bed. Might sound too simple but SUCCESS!! Was able to put the toilet seat down. (It was harder than you might think) SUCCESS!! Started walking a 1000 steps a day, then 2000, then 5000, then 10,000. SUCCESS.!! Finally I was allowed to drive and start lifting weights again. MAJOR SUCCESS!! Everyday I try something new, while trying to surpass the time when I was in the best shape of my life. Currently I am unable to run but I might have to try out for the Olympic Speedwalking team. I have learned more about myself while recovering from the worst injury in my life than I could ever imagine. It gave me a new motivation to push myself to become better everyday and make everyday a SUCCESS!!" See more
