15.01.2022 One year ago today, the Cudlee Creek fire was burning. At around 10 am, the Basket Range CFS siren sounded, and a warning went out - if your plan was to leave, ...then leave now. At that time, the Cudlee Creek fire was around 5 km from the edge of Basket Range, and heading straight for us. Lucky for us, but not so lucky for other places, the wind changed, and drove the fire towards Lobethal, Woodside and beyond. Our two appliances were both out at the fire -doing what they could to protect life and property. Our 14 crew, were heading along a very smoky Stafford Rd, having been sent to a structure fire. The smoke was getting too thick, and the conditions too dangerous, so they crew were looking for a place to turn around, when they spotted a person in the smoke. They stopped, and dragged the man into the fire truck, before heading out of the fire. That man had been caught on a tractor in the fire, and had suffered serious burns. The crew used bottled drinking water to cool those burns, while taking the man to a safer place. The crew dropped him at the Lenswood Fire Station, with the police, who continued to cool the burns, until the man was handed over to SAAS. Because of the actions of the Basket Range Crew, the man has recovered very well, and has been able to return to work. Some parts of his body, which had been burnt, did not require any skin grafts - because the crew found him not long after he was burnt, and did the right first aid, which was continued by others. Our 24 crew were busy, initially around Lobethal, with asset protection - and along with other CFS crews from a wide area, were able to save many houses and sheds. The commitment to this fire continued with Basket Range providing a full crew and appliance on most days for the following week, to work on mopping up the fire. No doubt, this fire was the worst day of some people's lives - a terrifying beast to face, in some cases wrought destruction on homes and property, disrupted lives, and took one life. And while this was 12 months ago, many people are still suffering - residents, families, businesses - and firefighters. As difficult as this time is for many, take the time to appreciate the good things (no matter how small), and remember, if you need help, ask.

14.01.2022 Absolutely love seeing finds like this one
