24.01.2022 What is Aquaponics? Aquaponics is the synergy between Aquaculture and Hydroponics. Aquaponics, in other words, is a natural eco system in an artificial system. It uses the process of naturally occurring bacteria to break down ammonia (a toxic chemical that is produced by fish waste) and turn it into nitrites and nitrates in whats called the nitrogen cycle. This nutrient rich water is pumped through the grow beds, the plants take the nitrites and nitrates out of the water and ...returns fresh clean water to the tanks and fish. The grow media also acts as what we call a bio filter. This provides surface area for the good bacteria to grow on and the more bacteria the better the eco system will run. In Aquaponics the daily consumption of water is 10% of what the average crop will use. The only water lost is through the intake from the plants as they drink and a small amout of evaporation. Due to the wide spread delivery of water and nutrients throughout the grow beds the plants can be planted much closer together then traditional crops, saving lots of space. The fish may also be stocked higher then traditional fish farms as the filtration of the water is so efficient. My vision Adelaide Aquaponics has the vision of being the leading aquaponics business in South Australia. A friendly, helpful business that provides support in numerous ways to help all types of customers set up and run an aquaponics system suitable for their life style and residency. We will also provide an experience at our organic cafe where frequently used fruit, vegetables, herbs and fish are grown on site. An online order for pick up or delivery is also available from our grocery store, aswell as being able to pick your own fresh food when you shop in store. And a lake side setting, to come relax and fish with a high success rate. Another future goal for Adelaide Aquaponics is to introduce specialized systems into schools, retirement villages and homeless shelters. We understand the necessity and urgency of teaching the youger generation's about the importance of growing in a eco friendly was, self sustainability and the benefits of nutritious healthy foods.As humans age we seem to enjoy plant life a lot more. Having a system in a retirement village can help stimulate the resident's minds and bodys, keep them entertained aswell as reducing running costs for the village kitchen or the individual residents.Helping the homeless was a voul I took a few years, I was unsure how I could do that at the time. Now I see supplying good healthy food to the homeless and giving them hands on experience in a structured environment so they are able to set up and run a system within the walls of the shelter. 02.01.2022 Fresh water aquariums can easily be turned into an indoor aquaponics system, with a LED grow light for the plants . Didn't get any tomatoes or strawberries as the plants out grew the filtration box. But I have had a small harvest of basil, sage and chillies. It's is the perfect set up for growing mico-herbs.
