25.01.2022 On this hot day, we thought we'd share a cooling photo. This lush little corner of Adelaide Botanic Garden can be found in the Bicentennial Conservatory, where the trees tower overhead and the smell of green is all around. Swimmingly lazily under the water lilies are orange-coloured fish and if you linger a while, you might hear the banjo frogs singing their songs. Plan your visit here: https://bit.ly/ABG_PYV
25.01.2022 Tune into Gardening Australia TONIGHT at 7:30pm and join Botanic Gardens of South Australia's Collections Development Officer, John Sandham, for a walk and talk with Sophie Thomson around the ever-popular Palm House. An exquisite, painstakingly restored Victorian glasshouse imported from Germany in 1875, the Palm House is thought to be the only one of its kind still in existence! Watch tonight or catch up on iView and learn about the building's incredible cultural and archite...ctural history and the spectacular botanical collections within. ----- 7:30pm Friday 16 October 2020 and repeated at 1:30pm Sunday 18 October 2020 on ABC TV + iview or stream via https://www.abc.net.au/gardening/
24.01.2022 The wait is killing us, but we're pretty sure our asparagus-looking friend will burst into bloom any day now! The Agave is monocarpic, meaning that it will flower once and then die, so once it blooms, it'll be well worth a visit
24.01.2022 To honour those who have fallen, Flanders Poppies (Papaver rhoeas) were planted in the Garden of Contemplation, near the Ginkgo Gate. They have started to bloom just in time for this Remembrance Day. #LestWeForget
23.01.2022 In line with the state government's announcement that South Australia will enter into lockdown to help contain Adelaide's COVID-19 outbreak, Adelaide, Mount Lofty and Wittunga Botanic Gardens will all be closed until Wednesday 25 November, 2020. While the gardens are closed, the plants will keep growing, flowers will still bloom and be enjoyed by bees, butterflies and birds ... and all the beauty will be here waiting for you when the gates can open again. Until then, kee...p safe and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Photo: Aaron Harrison

22.01.2022 Have you heard the news? WOMADelaide is going ahead in 2021 but not in Botanic Park. While we’re devastated we won’t be hosting thousands of visitors and artists in beautiful Botanic Park next year, we’re also delighted that the WOMADelaide team are able to present this important event in a 're-imagined' COVID-safe format. In 2021, WOMADelaide will feature Australian headline artists across four sunset concerts in picturesque King Rodney Park / Ityamai-itpina.... For information and to register for exclusive pre-sale tickets visit: www.womadelaide.com.au While this is unfortunate news for the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium, we look forward to working with the WOMADelaide team to deliver another fantastic WOMAD in Botanic Park in 2022 which will be the event’s 30th anniversary year since its first outing in Botanic Park in 1992!!
22.01.2022 This blushing beauty, Yarldarlba, grows in the western part of South Australia on deep red sands and rocky hillslopes.... but you don't need to go on a road trip to see it in person - just visit Adelaide Botanic Garden! Its sea anemone-esque flowers range from yellow to vibrant red but we reckon this pale pink bloom is a winner. Thanks to visitor aharro74 (on instagram) for this gorgeous photo of Eucalyptus youngiana.

15.01.2022 We would like to say a big thank you to the SA branch of the Australian Garden History Society for gifting us this wonderful replica Wardian Case. These nifty cabinets were used many moons ago to safely house exotic plant collections on long voyages both overseas and within Australia. Their secret is that they maintain a small ecosystem; the sealed box means that no water is lost, allowing plants to survive for many months where fresh water is sparse. These cases also o...nce lined the Main Walk of Adelaide Botanic Garden, providing a snug home for cacti collections. They were sadly removed in 1882 due to vandalism and theft of the fascinating contents within. You will be able to see this little piece of history up close when we display it in the garden and at our workshops in the future. Thanks again for this unique gift, Australian Garden History Society! See more

08.01.2022 It's National NAIDOC week, a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Australian Aboriginal people have an intricate understanding of the Australian environment, and a rich knowledge of plants developed over many thousands of years. Plants have been used for food, hunting, medicine, tools, ceremonies and in most other aspects of traditional life. ... In Adelaide Botanic Garden, you can find an ancient hollow tree in the Aussie Forest. The species is known as Karra to Kaurna people, and is now also known as River Red Gum or Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Burnt trunks like this were used as a basis for a shelter, made cosy and snug by blocking off openings exposed to the weather, and lining the floor with bark and animal fur rugs. A veranda, made of leaves, bark and branches extended the size of the shelter. The tree shelters - or wattowadli - were traditionally used in winter as family groups moved inland to escape the cold winds and flooded wetlands near the coast. Do you have a Karra near your place? They are such magnificent trees! #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe
