25.01.2022 Lest we forget.

25.01.2022 The SACE Board (South Australian Certificate of Education - SACE) have released their new Strategic Plan and it puts developing thriving learners at the centre of all that they do. SACE have created the Thrive Launchpad and we encourage parents and students to spend some time understanding the SACE Board’s vision for a thriving learner. Three of our students are featured on the Thrive Launchpad being contemporary learners at Adelaide Botanic High School, they experience daily what it is to be a thriving learner. Each answered the question "What does a thriving learner look like?". https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/thrive/

24.01.2022 Wednesday is Studio day! Students in our Bike Care Basics Studio were showcasing their skills today as they problem-solved a range of issues on their bikes. This included replacing broken spokes and truing rims, along with disassembling and regreasing headset bearings. The group has sent a donation of spokes and rims to the Adelaide Bike Kitchen, a volunteer-run community bicycle collective in Bowden. ... As always, a huge thanks to Sam, Vince and the amazing team at Treadly Bike Shop for sharing their incredible knowledge with our grateful students.

24.01.2022 Over the year our Bike Care Basics Studio collected donations from students and staff who had their bikes serviced. Today, this money was donated to Lighthouse Youth Projects Inc. to help them continue the awesome work they do. Lighthouse Youth Projects help young people at risk, empowering them for a successful future, mentoring them through bikes. ... Thanks must go to the incredible staff at Treadly Bike Shop for making our Studio the success that it was.

24.01.2022 Another fascinating trip to Parliament House for a different group of our Year 9 students. And thank you again to Rachel Sanderson - Member for Adelaide for sharing her knowledge and insights into politics and Parliament.

23.01.2022 This morning, more than 140 of our students participated in Walk a Mile in my Boots, raising over $1000 for the Hutt St Centre . This fundraiser is well aligned with the Yr8 Global Perspectives unit on Homelessness, where students investigate the issue of homelessness in Adelaide to find out why it happens, who it affects, and what they can do to help. Donations are still able to be made - link in the comments. #walkamile

22.01.2022 Happy World Teachers' Day! It's always lovely to get a personal message from someone, as our teachers can attest to. Here you can see some of our teachers with their handwritten notes of appreciation from their students in acknowledgement of World Teachers' Day. Such a heartwarming gesture! Thank you to our amazing teaching staff whose passion and dedication make learning so much fun for our students!

22.01.2022 Adelaide Botanic High School student, Sam Weavers is only 12 years old, but he is inspiring other children to pitch in and raise funds for kids with cancer. In 2018 he established a fundraising program called Kids4Kids. Although initially nervous about public speaking, Sam gives talks to schools, encouraging other students to help sell his fundraising popcorn pails, with the profits going to the Childhood Cancer Association. So far, Kids4Kids has donated nearly $10,000 to the... association. Westfield Local Heroes are nominated and voted for by their communities, with the three top finalists per Westfield centre each awarded a $10,000 grant for their affiliated organisation. If Sam is successful, the Childhood Cancer Association will use its grant to provide counselling to sick kids and their families via Skype. You can VOTE for Sam via Westfield Tea Tree Plaza here : https://www.westfield.com.au//6NUlsTYj7w/local-heroes-2020 (Voting closes on 14 September) See more

21.01.2022 What a treat! Students from our Bike Care Basics Studio called into Treadly Bike Shop today to check out their new workshop. 21.01.2022 Our Year 9 students have been immersed in The Great War as part of their Global Perspectives study. They started with a war memorial walk to reflect on the significance of memorials and recognising the sacrifices made by our soldiers, including our Indigenous soldiers. We have also had a number of guest speakers and presenters come in to work with our students, including veterans, historians and expert teachers on World War I. ... Our students worked with the Virtual War Memorial Australia - Schools Program (VWMA) to research service men, mostly from the local 32nd Battalion. The work the students did will be published on the VWMA for the benefit of soldier’s families, historical researchers and the community. Some of our students were able to research family members which enriched their learning. Upon completion of their soldier profile students had the experience of enlisting, where they completed their attestation papers and received their ration pack. Some of their work will be showcased on Remembrance Day when the Year 9 students will be taking on a leading role at the school assembly.

20.01.2022 This morning the team from Deja Brew Speciality Coffee presented to our Year 10 Café Culture students about what it means to start a small business. With their business being just 8 weeks old, they really were the perfect people to share their story.

10.01.2022 Our year 10 students have been using this week to make a start on their SACE Research Projects. This afternoon's activity was a lesson in creativity and teamwork. Students collaborated to design, make and present a School Formal outfit for a fashion parade. It may look like it was just a bit of fun, though the activity challenged students to work together and develop the skills in giving and receiving feedback, a key skill required in the Research Project.

09.01.2022 This week, Year 10 students studying Café Culture learned about the art of making GREAT coffee (among other things) In a course run by the Independent Institute Training Specialists, students were given the opportunity to learn key barista skills, and an understanding of customer service, selling and café duties. Students will use these skills later in Café Culture to create their own small café business.

09.01.2022 In Week 8, Adelaide Botanic High School (ABHS) played against Glenunga International High School (GIHS) in the full day 2020 Interschool Chess Competition, held at ABHS. ABHS and GIHS both raised funds for the World Vision Australia Beirut Appeal to support those affected by Lebanon’s recent devastating explosion and helping to provide medical supplies, food, and water for the estimated 300,000 people who are now homeless. The tournament, which was facilitated by internationally renowned chess coach and Founding Member of Chesslife, David Koetsier, provided students an opportunity to put their skills into practice while engaging in some friendly competition. Although Glenunga ended up winning after five consecutive rounds of dynamic play, each student put their best foot forward and had plenty of fun to boot!

09.01.2022 NAIDOC Week is a time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In celebrating this significant week, our students have been involved in some activities at school with more to come! In addition to NAIDOC Week, we celebrate and spotlight Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture throughout the year at Adelaide Botanic High School. For example, we run a weekly Breakfast Club for our Aboriginal and Torres... Strait Islander students, and a fortnightly Studio where we connect with the Walkabout Centre and Wirtlu Yarlu from Adelaide University. We hope you enjoy some of these photos which show the many ways we celebrate the rich cultures of our Indigenous peoples. #NAIDOCWeek2020 #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOC

04.01.2022 A few weeks ago we shared that our Year 8 students are working on something BIG with our Artist in Residence, Sue Ninham. While we started off small and in 2D, things have been jumping off the pages and coming to life. Here's a little progress update and next week we'll share some insight into how things have taken shape.

03.01.2022 Year 10 Café Culture students created a pop-up café, serving coffee to staff. Over the past three weeks, the class has undertaken a barista course to learn how to prepare and serve coffee. Students will use feedback from today’s pop-up experience to assist them to plan, prepare, create and run their own small café business by the end of this school year.

01.01.2022 Students undertaking Japanese and French Studios have recently visited the Art Gallery of South Australia. A Curator spoke with students about woodblock printing, then students spent time examining the art and looking at the way that stories are told through different mediums. The students from the French Next Level Studio are focusing on French art, starting with Impressionist paintings. They viewed works by prominent French artists and compared these to Australian works.

01.01.2022 What a way to finish 2020!
