24.01.2022 "The greatest thing, I think, that ever happened in the Adelaide Gaol was the contact visits they built the contact visiting area". Former Guard - D Somerville Oral History Collection OH19/26 Prior to building the visitor area, visitors and prisoners stood several meters apart on either side of the Sally Port and had to yell to each other across the gap.

24.01.2022 Honeycomb bricks surround the Gaol walls and once provided a cheap and effective way to keep prisoners within the yards. The noise made by the falling bricks would quickly alert security staff if someone tried to climb over a wall.

20.01.2022 If you have previously visited Adelaide Gaol you may have noticed an odd item for sale in the Gaol canteen. Budgies became available for purchase after one prisoner received approval to keep a pet bird, which led to other prisoners wanting the same privilege.

19.01.2022 With an expected temperature of 44 degrees this Friday Adelaide Gaol will be closed to ensure public safety. Stay cool and keep an eye on vulnerable members of the community.

Walking shoes, a warm jacket and an umbrella are re...commended. We encourage you to book your tickets online to ensure we are able to manage our capacity in relation to social distancing guidelines. 18.01.2022 The initial Gaol plan included four watch towers, but only two were actually built. The tower pictured was the only one completed to the original design (note the castellation at the top).

18.01.2022 You couldnt move a yard without getting permission, and the continual slamming of doors after you. You know, if you want to go ten yards youve got to get permission to go through that gate, then another gate, and if youre doing years, it can really wear you down. Former Prisoner - D Somerville Oral History Collection

14.01.2022 The first person hanged in South Australia was Michael Magee, a 25 year old Irish born immigrant who was found guilty of willingly attempting to kill the colony Sheriff, Samuel Smart. Magee was hanged from a large gum tree at the Government Iron Store on Montefiore Hill, which is today part of the Adelaide Oval carpark. A hangman proved difficult to find, not even the offer of 10 pounds (approximately $2500 today) could persuade an executioner to step forward. Eventually, the... cook of the South Australian Company was persuaded to complete the job, unfortunately the execution did not go to plan and Magee suffered a horrific death. Magee was likely buried in the grounds of Government House, next to a temporary jail that held prisoners while Adelaide Gaol was still under construction. 14.01.2022 One of the Adelaide Gaol’s infamous characters, Sarah Francisco, is brought to life with Heaps Good Productions

13.01.2022 Under the kitchen is completely hollowIf you stand there you can hear exactly everything the prisoners talk about, because it echoes down the tunnels, and the prisoners never ever knew thatThere was three times that I know of where escapes were planned, and they were foiled because of what was overheard in the cooks mess. Former Guard - D Somerville Oral History Collection

13.01.2022 Glen Sabre Valance was the last person hanged in South Australia. Below, a former inmate discusses how the day affected fellow inmates. Now that daythe whole place was damp, dismal, morbid. No-one caredabout anything. No-one was bright. Its a shocking place to be. I mean, alright, he committed an horrendous crimebut its still a terrible place to be on a day of an execution. Its not just the execution; its the actual death, because Ive seen the old fellows whove passed away in the Gaol during the night and it just affects the whole Gaol. Its a funny thing it is its just like a shadow goes over the place and its terrible. Just for that day though. Next morning its as if it never happened. Its a strange feeling. But yes, on the actual day of the execution its terrible. Inmate, 1964

12.01.2022 The Observation Tower in the centre of the Gaol was constructed after the multistory cell blocks were built too tall for the outer Watch Towers to view the yards. Guards on duty here were not permitted to leave, so a toilet was installed in the corner of the room- despite there being 360 degree windows!

10.01.2022 Glen Sabre Valence was the last person executed in South Australia, on 24 November 1964. Valence was 21 when he was hanged for shooting his former employer at Kooroon Station, near Bordertown. At the time opposition to capital punishment was growing and abolitionists mounted a determined campaign to spare Valence from the gallows, raising a petition of almost 3000 signatures and presenting them to Premier, Sir Thomas Playford. Despite this, Valences crimes were considered too heinous and he was sent to the gallows.

01.01.2022 Did you know... An urban legend used to circulate Adelaide that the distorted faces on the front building and towers of Adelaide Gaol were death masks made from the prisoners executed on site. The grotesques were actually for decorative purposes and in 1840 the elaborate towers which they appear on cost thousands of pounds.
