12.01.2022 SA’s first forecast 40C scorcher is upon us and our animals and local wildlife depend on our help. Here’s what you can do: Fill up a bird bath and multiple containers to leave around you back and front yard for the birds and bees, koalas, lizards and other animals that will need a drink. ... If you have fish in an outside pond, make sure to keep topping it up with cool water. Make sure your pets have shade and plenty of fresh water. Place a clam shell pool in the shade and fill it with water so your dog can wade in the water to keep cool. If your pet seems to be in discomfort, try wetting their feet and misting water onto their face. This is an option for dogs, cats, ferrets, poultry and caged birds as many animals control their inner temperature through their feet. Consider freezing fruits such as watermelon and strawberries to feed to your chickens to help keep them cool. Small pets, such as rabbits, guinea pigs and birds, are particularly susceptible to heat. If you can’t bring them indoors, consider draping their cages with a wet towels. You can also provide a sturdy icepack or frozen water bottle for the animal to lean against. And please, if you have elderly or unwell neighbours, ask if they and their animals are ok. Small backyard pools are perfect for keeping dogs hydrated and cool in summer - they are also the ideal sized water bowl for Great Danes
