We are making 120 recommendations about the role and operation of the Powers of Attorney and Agency Act 1984 (SA) including changes to the law and practice to clarify and improve the use and operation of EPAs in South Australia, says the Director of SALRI, Professor John Williams. 14.01.2022 A landmark law reform! The Statutes Amendment (Abolition of the Defence of Provocation and Related Matters) Bill 2020 has received strong cross-party support in the South Australian Parliament. The Bill is based on the two major Reports of the SA Law Reform Institute based at the Adelaide Law School. The Bill will abolish the offensive and outdated 'gay panic' defence and the wider defence of provocation to murder and make linked changes for domestic violence and sentencing.

06.01.2022 Right before lockdown, Associate Professor David Brown presented at a webinar on Wednesday 18th November on the solemn, but complex, topic of Life and Death in Bankruptcy. This involves the relationship between state succession law and Federal Bankruptcy law concerning deceased estates. This was part of the series of Personal Insolvency Forum sessions co-produced by Piper Alderman and Adelaide Law School's ROCIT Research Unit (Regulation of Corporations Insolvency and Taxation). The well-attended session was compered jointly by Professor Chris Symes of ROCIT, and Mike Hayes of Piper Alderman.

03.01.2022 Dr Sylvia Villios and Associate Professor David Brown have published an article in the most recent edition of the Australian Tax Forum journal which discusses how an insolvent corporate tax debtor is likely to be impacted as a result of the use of the ATO’s garnishee power. Given the newly announced small business restructuring procedure, this article becomes even more pertinent, addressing the conflict between the Government's corporate rescue policy, and the ATO's revenue maximisation approach, in particular its 'de facto priority' through use of garnishee notices.
