In light of the recent news reports you may have questions regarding the safety of using UV nail lamps and the claims its a potential cancer risk. So we believe its important to make sure you have the facts so that you can come to your own conclusions and make your own decisions about your gel mani or pedi. T H E . C L A I M UV light used to cure gel and shellac manicures are reported to emit e...nough concentrated light to cause serious skin damage, going as far as to compare them to tanning beds. T H E . F A C T S The UV light used to cure polish contains only a fraction of the wavelengths found in natural sunlight. Gel polish is also designed to polymerize using only a small fraction of UVA light therefore curing does not require a large quantity of full spectrum UV. T H E . B L U R R Y . P A R T UV nail lamps have not been studied in the needed controlled environment necessary to draw a more black and white conclusion. However the exposure and quantity of UVA waves emitted by a nail lamp signify low risk. I N . S U M M A R Y According to a comprehensive study, Photobiological Safety Evaluation of UV Nail Lamps (Dowdy & Sayre, 2013), it would take over 25 minutes of daily nail lamp exposure to exceed safe levels of UVA exposure. As most of us go to the salon bi-weekly at most, exceeding this range would be extremely unlikely. The study tested six major brands of nail lamps and found that all brands emitted below what should be considered hazardous UVA amounts. The study determined that the risk factor for developing melanoma from nail lamps is 11-46 times less than naturally occurring afternoon sun exposure. However, if the concept of UV light still makes you uncomfortable, a good UV-free alternative is the dipping system.
