12.01.2022 Last week our students went to Mars! We spent a whole day at Hamilton Space School, a designated facility and specialist curriculum to lead space education. Hamilton Secondary College is one of the two institutions in Australia (the other is Strathmore College in Melbourne) able to run the Mission to Mars STEM activity. The Space Centre has four main areas which support our space science program a simulated Martian crater and landscape with seven different geological zone...s, a Mission Control Room, a Briefing Room, and a space laboratory. It has been designed to provide an immersive, hands-on learning experience. The briefing room is an audio-visual experience where students watch an introductory video about some of the issues that they need to overcome in moving humans to Mars. Students role-play space scenarios with teams taking turns to operate as astronauts dressed in full space suits collecting samples on the Mars surface, and scientists monitoring data and problem-solving in Mission Control. The design simulates real-life Martian explorations in the same way that NASA sends space probes to land in craters, as they are prime locations to gather samples. After the mission, they go to the laboratory and analyse the rock samples they collected on the surface. Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/jmnlJU1uRtg Note to parents: if your child missed out on the excursion, there will be another one in Term 1/2021.

02.01.2022 Dear parents, As you know, every year we organise several excursions for our students. In 2020 because of COVID-19, we will only be able to arrange one, but we promise it will be memorable. This year we plan to take our learners to Mars! Well, maybe not the planet, but to the Mission to Mars activity at Hamilton Secondary College. ... Hamilton Secondary College is the only school in South Australia with a designated facility and specialist curriculum to lead space education. The Space Centre has four main areas which support the space science program a simulated Martian crater and landscape with seven different geological zones, a Mission Control Room, a Briefing Room, and a space laboratory. It has been designed to provide an immersive, hands-on learning experience. The briefing room is an audio-visual experience where students watch an introductory video about some of the issues that they need to overcome in moving humans to Mars. Students will role-play space scenarios with teams taking turns to operate as astronauts dressed in full space suits collecting samples on the Mars surface, and scientists monitoring data and problem-solving in Mission Control. The design simulates real-life Martian explorations in the same way that NASA sends space probes to land in craters, as they are prime locations to gather samples. We will organise the excursion on Wednesday 28 October 2020. The activity will start at 9.30 am and will finish at 3 pm. That means the students will not be able to attend their mainstream school on that day, so you will have to inform the school that they will attend a STEM activity at Hamilton College. We will pay Hamilton College $150 for the entire group, so if we split the fees, you will pay around $6. The maximum number of attendees is 24, so if the activity is booked out, we will run a second one on Friday 20 November. To enrol, please send us an email or a text message by 1 September. The address is Hamilton Secondary College, 815 Marion Rd, Mitchell Park. Please download the Mission to Mars brochure for more information: https://www.hamcoll.sa.edu.au//Mission-to-Mars-Updated-Com
