25.01.2022 I love all of Lucy's videos and how lovely this one is to see how happy she is for the family and the teacher involved on their progress and awesome idea from the teacher!

25.01.2022 As promised, blog post on preparing for Moving Up Morning. Probably the last one for this year. Who else suddenly feels panicked about Christmas?!

23.01.2022 Hi everyone, sorry that I have not got around to posting for a long time...I was on summer break and then have been very busy with postnatal clients since school went back... At this stage I am probably at about maximum capacity for postnatal clients until about the beginning of Term 3. Therefore I don't feel that I can take on a child for classroom support until then. However, I am currently remotely supporting a parent of a child with SM and this has been going well - slowl...y but surely! Coaching a parent takes much less time than supporting a child in class so I could possibly take on another parent for support between now and Term 3. Please be aware however that I am overseas for most of June and won't be responding to e mails in that time, but will set up clients with action plans for whilst I am away and book in calls / visits for as soon as I return. Thanks See more

23.01.2022 New SM blog post is up on the site. Hope you find it helpful.

14.01.2022 I am thinking of running a SEMINAR IN ADELAIDE for parents of children with SM aged 3-6 years old. Over the last few weeks I have spoken to a few potential clients who I can support in advocating for their child with SM and some of my discussions have been covering the same topics. There is a shortage of psychs experienced in SM in SA and it's shocking and saddening to me that as a non qualified person I seem to know a vast amount more about SM treatment than the 'profession...Continue reading

12.01.2022 I'm just popping this video up for a remote client who would like to see a video of my puppy when he was little. FB is the easiest way to share videos that can be too large to send by e mail or text and I don't suppose it is a hardship to see a puppy video in your feed!

12.01.2022 I spent half of yesterday updating my daughter’s SM info pack for her new teacher. It’s getting faster every year and if she didn’t also have epilepsy it would only take an hour. Tomorrow we meet up with the new extended Ed. teacher and the new class teacher. Time spent in preparation is never wasted. This year I could give no SM info and hope for the best but I would rather prepare for a regression than firefight problems later. Don’t wait until day one or week two to set ...this year’s teacher up for a successful start with your SM child. Being annoyed that the teacher doesn’t understand SM or isn’t making the time to meet with you or respond to your emails in week 1 when every other special needs parent wants their attention is a bit unfair. Any school which isn’t proactive in agreeing to meet with you before school goes back should be setting your alarm bells ringing. See more

10.01.2022 Hi everyone, Just a reminder that if you need phone calls to get tips for end of year events, class placement requests next year, transition visits for next year, school holidays visits to school etc, please don't leave it til the last minute as although I am working over the summer I do have limited hours and also need to allow time for postnatal clients. I have plenty of availability to do phone calls over the next 2-3 weeks but it's getting busier after that.... I will be closed for SM clients between 19th Dec & 10th Jan. Thanks Susannah

09.01.2022 Hello, just wanted to let you all know that I am heading off travelling with my family for a few months from approx July/ August. This won't affect my availability for remote support for SM as I will still continue to do phone consults, e mails etc from the road. I may even pass through your town and be able to meet up in person! We are heading up through the red centre to Darwin, Kakadu and then across to Townsville via Mount Isa & Winton then back to Adelaide along the coas...t as far as Sydney then cross country back to Adelaide. It does mean however that it wouldn't be fair to start a new relationship providing in person classroom support to a child as they need the security of knowing that support can continue for as long as it is needed. Prior to the trip I will be working as many hours as possible, filling in any gaps in my schedule with some extra domestic help to existing/former postnatal clients. Postnatal and SM consults will take priority over this but it would be really helpful if you can book your SM phone consults about 7-10 days in advance so that I don't end up messing everyone about with schedule changes. Thanks guys and good luck for school going back! x

09.01.2022 Guess what? I started writing my SM book! Given my previous track record of 11 years and still counting working on my baby sleep book, don't hold your breath that it will be finished before your child starts uni....BUT I have around 40 chapters to write and have already written three. It is actually easier to write than for new Mums and babies so I may surprise myself and get this one done in 1-2 years.

05.01.2022 I have been given the gift of time!! I no longer have to do school run (new school bus- awesome ) so as of next year I will be increasing my work hours. This means I can now take on 3 clients at any one time for in person support (generally 2 postnatal, 1 SM or 3 PN) and another two families for remote SM support. ... Even if you live in Adelaide you may not need in person classroom support or it may not be suitable for your child's situation. Remote support is also a great way to keep costs down. Remote support is currently charged at an hourly rate of only $40 per hour and is calculated like a 'tab'. I just send a bill each time you accumulate $150-200 worth of billable hours. Prices may go up next year but not significantly. Remote support is not a replacement for but is complementary to getting support from a psychologist. It can also help to keep your psych costs down, plus is a valuable support for you as a parent. You may end up putting off your own need to talk at $150-200 per hour psych sessions and focus solely on your child's need for therapy. It can be done at any time during the school day and there is no need for you to attend a time consuming appointment or try to talk about your own feelings in your child's appointment whilst hoping your anxious little one can be persuaded to sit outside for five minutes! I'm not increasing my hours just yet so that I don't overload myself just before the summer break, but I do currently have availability to take on one child for in class support or one more remote support family.

05.01.2022 Just a quick thought that I wanted to share with you this morning about keeping the balance between pressure and patience when dealing with Selective Mutism. I am really saddened by the number of people who have contacted me in the last few weeks who have been utterly failed by education, medical and allied health professionals. These people have been told again and again that there is either nothing wrong with their child, or that their child is 'just quiet' and will grow o...Continue reading

05.01.2022 Just a reminder that I will be abroad for all of June and will not be responding to e mails in that time, nor checking facebook. I am not taking my phone so please don't text me. If you have an enquiry about receiving SM support, please e mail me through my website and I will reply on my return to Australia. You can also obtain my phone number from my website and call me anytime after 27th June. At this stage, first availability is from August/Sept onwards. For the coming financial year, remote parent support will continue to be charged at the same rates as postnatal phone support. I will put up a new fee schedule for classroom support when I get back from my trip.

04.01.2022 Lovely piece! Even more true for little ones with SM. Pre school is exhausting for all kids but even more so when you can't talk!

03.01.2022 I get a lot of phone calls about older children and teens with SM and I refer straight to the Selective Mutism Clinic in Sydney. SM is harder to treat in older children so there is no time to mess about with people who 'say' that they have 'experience' of treating SM. Go straight to the experts.

02.01.2022 Just a reminder that now is the time to think about planning for class placements next year. Some schools give you an opportunity to send in a letter with any special requests. If so, have this ready to go soon. Keep it clear and concise but give a reason for your requests...'it is recommended by experts in SM that children should be placed with a teacher with a gentle, sensitive personality and be sent up to new classes with at least 2-3 children that they are verbal with (i...Continue reading

02.01.2022 This is very interesting. So if language is slower to develop in bilingual children and SM more likely to occur in bilingual children, then if language is slower to develop where the child is exposed to different accents, surely there would also be an increased incidence of SM in those children also?....so in our case, Mum and Dad have english accents but different english accents to each other(East Anglian and West Country but both faded - more generic southern and a bit Australianised!) and then most other people they speak to have Adelaide accents, but not all. I can see that it would be confusing - my children hear grass, bath, castle, dance pronounced about three or four different ways!
