25.01.2022 Nicole thought it was time to show you some ideas with a massage ball. NB - a trap for young players is using the ball against a gyprock wall. It will dent it nicely if you do! These are a cheap device but effective for getting into tight areas!

25.01.2022 Love this. For any Spinal Tap fans. And fans of tendinitis. #spinaltap #spinaltapmoment #spinaltapband #tendinopathy #tendinitis #adelaidewestphysio #awp

25.01.2022 Do you have a spikey ball? What do you use yours for? If you have a favourite use case for your spikey ball, leave a comment! Nicole shows you a couple of uses for your spikey ball in this video NB: dont use it on a gyprock wall unless you want little dimples in it! Ask me how I know...

21.01.2022 Have you ever been told that you MUST drink water after you have a massage? If you have been given a reason, have you ever wondered if it were actually true? This blog is bound to ruffle a few feathers, but it needed to be said!... https://www.adelaidewestphysio.com.au/water-massage/

21.01.2022 I know how to give myself a migraine - it isn't the first time, but I plan on making it the last time. A great lesson for anyone that is prone to headaches or migraines, and food for thought for people that work, rest or play in fairly static positions. It wasn't cricket's fault.

20.01.2022 Great news for SA! A quick update for Adelaide West

20.01.2022 We had a special visit last week from Lisa and Anna. We werent quick enough to capture Nicole holding Lisa, but this is Nicole holding Anna. Do you think this pic is worthy of a caption? Just a reminder, Lisa is back on Tuesday afternoon/evenings and more announcements to follow ...

20.01.2022 Matthea Malcolm is a legend. She posted this on the private Henley Surf Life Saving Club page, and she gave me permission to share it. I thought that lots of people could benefit from this right now! Good morning Henley Surf Sports people... Checking in to see how you are all going... what a thing hey one minute to be planning for the great weather, competitions, training, and the next minute walk to the letter box and back I am aware that there can be a dilemma in how to process this. There is the gratefulness approach we are lucky, most of us we have our health, food on the table, a roof over our heads all true. And yet, we can be upset, sad, frustrated... also true. THE RISK TO OUR WELLBEING COMES IF WE FORCE OURSELVES TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THESE TWO APPROACHES. My day job is in mental health, and the magical word here is AND... we can be grateful and aware that we are amongst the most privileged in the world, AND be ticked off that we cannot go out on our surf ski or that our trip away has been cancelled. We can be thankful we have family and can enjoy our time cooking AND be concerned that we will lose fitness and conditioning for our sports goals. The science is in: feeling anger, sadness or grief is not the problem it is human. But the chemical activity of guilt, shame, denial... this is the breeding ground for chronic distress. So, I suggest we let it all be choose appropriate times, places and people to share this with, or just be honest with yourself alone. Use the word AND... and be Ok with others having their AND’s too For me? I am highly conscious that I have all I really need, I am privileged and lucky to have the sort of life that I usually have AND, I have moments of being super ticked off that I had planned 2 weeks leave in some of the best weather we have seen for ages, and I cannot cycle, swim, go to the beach, paddle my ski, or compete in the 2 competitions I had planned. Grrrr.... Take care all

20.01.2022 There are loads of things you can do with your spikey ball. Here are 3 great ones for your legs - hamstrings, glutes and sole of the foot (this one feels great!)

17.01.2022 Lockleys U12, U13, U14 - it wasnt meant to be ... However, what an amazing year it has been, and I bet everyone is super proud of your efforts this year. We certainly are! @lockleysfootball

16.01.2022 Given that it is National Pain Week, I thought I would take the opportunity to talk about persistent pain. There is an enormous population of people that are living with persistent pain and have just accepted that is as good as it gets. The reality is that physios can help provide REAL improvements with persistent pain, BUT it often doesnt involve hands-on type therapies. ... The GLA:D programme has shown again and again of the improvement that people can have with pain, even in longstanding osteoarthritis provided: 1. the education and the messages are correct and 2. the exercises are targeted and are specific to the person and their capabilities. The first step is often an adjustment - an adjustment in understanding of what pain actually represents and how to work with it and not against it. I would love your comments! If anyone wants to talk further, feel free to call us on 1300 730 574 and we can chat about how we can help you.

16.01.2022 A really cool email last week made my day! Someone downloaded the Ultimate Guide to Low Back Pain Myths, and she clearly got it. Ill tell you what she said that got me so excited... Click here for your copy. Its free!! http://bit.ly/lbpmyths

15.01.2022 Nicole recently completed the #explainpain course with Tim Cocks from @noigroup. As part of our weekly continuing education programme, Nicole presented some of the ideas to the rest of the group. Nicole is talking about how pain is emergent, not linear, which is a really important idea to really get if you want to understand pain.

14.01.2022 So you've got your foam roller. You've lovingly whacked your partner with it. What else can you do? This exercise is a great progression from the all 4s exercise that is done in Pilates mat classes - add some challenge to your balance! #physiotherapy #physio #physiotherapist #physiotherapists #Physios #physiopilates #adelaidewestphysio #awp #foamroller #foamrollers #foamrollerhomepilates #foamrollertime

14.01.2022 Knowing how to talk with someone about their persistent pain is no less a skill as knowing how to perform a manual therapy technique.

14.01.2022 Masks announcement A bit contradictory that we have to increase our precautions with masks on the same day that a whole lot of other restrictions are loosened but anyway... Buy a mask for $1 if you haven't got one, we will put that in the Movember donation box.... Disposable surgical masks only since late yesterday, QR codes on the way, so download your mySA GOV app in preparation If you have a respiratory issue or a mental health issue that makes it genuinely impossible to wear a mask (not just 'I don't want to wear a mask") then CALL US BEFOREHAND and we will discuss it on the phone.

13.01.2022 We’ll try again! A quick message to our Adelaide West crew!

13.01.2022 Some good news about knee arthritis (and applies for all forms of arthritis) from 2018, but still very relevant As Christian Barton says. there is a lot of money being wasted in the health care system on joint replacement when there are other options that should be explored first Exercise is an important component, but it MUST be the right exercise and it MUST be at the right intensity, which is individualised for the person ... If you are interested in learning more, shoot us a message via Messenger or call us on 1300 730 574 https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1949028918461087

13.01.2022 Happy World Physio Day! Though a lot of the media focus is on our musculoskeletal work, it is important to remember that there is an important role for physio in respiratory care, and more widely, in all acute and rehab areas in hospitals. There are many physios all over the world showing up for work every day in the front line. Thanks to you all for your work!

12.01.2022 If you havent been in lately, it is looking a little different inside ...

12.01.2022 Lockleys Football Club are having a great year! Grand new clubrooms, first year with a womens team, the first year of fielding a Ds team. Plus top of the ladder in As, Bs and Cs! ... They are going to feature heavily in the finals, so get ready for some home finals over the next few weeks!!

12.01.2022 To celebrate our 10 year anniversary, I made a wish list of some incredible people that we have got to know over the last 10 years. I emailed them one question. This was the result. Its profound and thought-provoking. Thanks so much to everyone who gave their time to respond!! I am indebted to David Butler and Tim Cocks from Noigroup, Helen Clare from McKenzie Institute International, Nicole DalPiva, Ian Gifford, Mark Harrity, Dr Richard Hetzel, Sonya Keenan, Rae Lawson, Lorimer Moseley from UniSA City East Campus, Molly Pittman, Kirsty Prior, Mike Rhodes, Ash Roy, Peter Schoch, Alison Swannell, Dr Dean Watson - Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist, Cassandra Zaina https://www.adelaidewestphysio.com.au/decade-lessons/

11.01.2022 Who knew there were so many things you could do on a foam roller? And were just getting started! We might demonstrate some ideas on exercise balls, booty bands or massage balls next. Any preferences? Let us know in the comments.

11.01.2022 Another foam roller exercise, another great stretch for your middle back Your thoracic spine craves extension or the backwards movement because there arent stacks of things that take you there in an average day. It feels great to move this way, - another use case for that foam roller!

11.01.2022 A quick message about what I have seen lately, and probably everyone else is seeing. It is easy to give it lip service, but we have to do it!

11.01.2022 UPDATE: Hes been found!! Local friends, PLEASE keep an eye out for Jons gorgeous dog, Arlo. He decided to take himself for a walk late yesterday.

10.01.2022 Who said these had to be in numerical order? Exercise #7 last time, exercise #6 with Nicole today A lovely little move for shoulder blades, shoulders and the lumbar spine!

10.01.2022 HOT OFF THE PRESS. **Disposable masks for staff AND patients from midnight tomorrow** If you don't have any disposable masks, we have them in the clinic, we will charge a nominal amount per mask and donate it to the Movember fund. There will be QR codes as well at some point soon (it didn't look like this would involve us about 30 minutes ago!!)... It is worth downloading the mySA GOV app if you have a smartphone. If you don't, don't worry, we will record analog as a backup. There are some exceptions ie certain breathing difficulties, but if you just don't want to wear one, it's too bad! It's nice to be ahead of the curve, therapists have been wearing masks for 2 weeks now! Additional note: while we are in this phase, it would make sense to keep numbers of anyone that isn't having treatment to a minimum

09.01.2022 Good crowd a Lockleys Oval for Round 1, a chance to use the fantastic new facilities. Half time, leading by 9 goals

09.01.2022 These results are pretty astounding! To see reduction in pain that is maintained or improved at 12 months is so encouraging. 06.01.2022 Don't focus on the lying muppet. Be grateful that things are better than they looked. Nicola Spurrier, Grant Stevens and Steven Marshall have been fantastic IMHO (how Grant Stevens didn't lose it with that journalist called Andrew in the press conferences, I'll never know)

06.01.2022 Lockleys Football Club are having a great year! Grand new clubrooms, first year with a women's team, the first year of fielding a Ds team. Plus top of the ladder in As, Bs and Cs! ... 06.01.2022 Never heard of Charles Bonnet syndrome? So many things that can be drawn from this and applied to understanding how pain works. Charles Bonnet Syndrome is when someone has become blind or has deteriorating eyesight, and they see phantom visual images. This isnt dementia or mental illness (though it is often assumed to be). The person knows the visions arent real. Its not like a dream. They describe it as watching a high definition movie with no sound. ... The scenes are quite detailed, and they sound quite happy and intriguing. One example given was people in beautiful Eastern dress going up and down a staircase. Some are quite weird, like goats in overcoats walking across the lounge room. It is estimated that more than 25% of people with significant eyesight deterioration have at least one episode of Charles Bonnet Syndrome! The point here is that you dont actually need to have the infrastructure - whether it is fully functioning eyes, or a limb - to have convincing sensations or experiences in a part of the body. Similarly, you dont need to have tissue damage to feel pain in a body part. You dont even need to have the body part to feel pain in it. If you want to listen to that podcast, you can access it right here: https://www.abc.net.au//a/seeing-when-youre-blind/12503398 I can highly recommend it, it is fascinating stuff!

06.01.2022 Recent professional development session on shoulder testing and the validity of all the hundreds of shoulder special tests. Ed, you dont have to look so guilty!

06.01.2022 It's MOVEMBER aka dirty moustache month. It turns out that since accepting the mo challenge in 2012, we have raised over $3.5K which is fabulous! Thanks to all of your generosity over the years. My main motivation is men's mental health and suicide prevention, as I explain in the video.... It is quite stunning what Movember have done since the inception in 2003, and how much they have invested in men's health initiatives - you can read more here: https://au.movember.com/ The link to my donation page is here if anyone is interested in donating: https://movember.com/m/russellmackenzie007?mc=1 Thankyou in advance if you do! You may well be saving a life.

06.01.2022 Some big wins there, Carl Mickan kicked 10 I do believe.

04.01.2022 We're back! We are very grateful to be opening up again on Monday 23/11/20. Most unexpected, but we're not knocking it! Just to clarify: - we will be returning to regular services, including exercise groups and remedial massage therapy as we were in the first half of last week.... - we are able to provide well in excess of 4 square metres per customer in the exercise area. - our therapists will be wearing masks during exercise groups and treatment sessions. - wearing masks is not mandatory but recommended as per the SA Health guidelines USING HAND SANITISER ON ENTRY AND SOCIAL DISTANCING REMAINS MANDATORY Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 or suspicion that they might be infected must not enter the clinic and ring us instead. Anyone that has had COVID-19 test but hasn’t received the result must not attend. Other infection control protocols are unchanged as they have been in place since March, that is: wiping down all beds / pillows / furniture after every patient regular cleaning of surfaces and door handles limiting the number of people in the waiting area if you prefer to wait in your car, call or text us that you have arrived and we will call you when your physio is ready for you ensuring that there is time for one group of people to leave before the next group enters maintaining social distancing We must all individually make sure that we are adhering to our best infection control practices. The health and safety of our staff, customers and the wider community is our top priority. We will continue to take all of the necessary precautions to minimise the risk of transmission whilst providing ongoing care to families as safe and appropriate based upon current Department of Health advice. You can do this via our website www.adelaidewestphysio.com.au and clicking on "Online Bookings". NB: this is only for people that have already gone through the initial process with a physio!

03.01.2022 This is professional development in December 2020 on day one of increased precautions for health care settings and relaxing of restrictions everywhere else! Go figure! However, a great session on neuropathic pain and manual therapy from Kimberley

03.01.2022 Back to work, South Australia! A big thanks for the work from Nicola Spurrier, Grant Stevens and Steven Marshall. No matter what some people say, I would much rather SA was in this position than an extended lockdown for acting too late.... We are back to work as normal with full infection control protocols - we continue to take it very seriously. All exercise groups are back on. Physio appointments are filling fast for the week, and we have a couple of spots for remedial massage available on Wednesday which will be snapped up quickly. Take care, y'all!

02.01.2022 KNEE AND HIP OSTEOARTHRITIS - are there solutions that actually work apart from medication? Is it possible to delay or avoid a hip or knee replacement? The research says YES! It may surprise you to know that (despite all the advertising), the medical guidelines say that the first treatment option SHOULD NOT be medication. And it certainly shouldnt be joint replacement surgery! Best of all, the first stop for treating osteoarthritis is DRUG-FREE and SURGERY-FREE.... However, these recommended guidelines often arent followed. There are three reasons: it is much quicker and easier to prescribe medication and reduce pain, even if the result is temporary the thought of a surgery to fix the pain is attractive it is a challenge to find somewhere that offers trustworthy, effective and research-backed treatment options This is where the GLA:D programme comes in! Research from 2017 into the GLA:D program showed a significant reduction in pain in the 18 000 participants. In fact, the study reported an average of 32% reduction. That is pretty good, you would have to agree! Other outcomes include: reduced use of joint-related pain killers less sick leave related to the joint an increase in strength high satisfaction ratings from those who have completed the programme increased levels of physical activity 12 months after starting the program If you would like more information about how GLA:D can help you, just message us via Messenger, or call us on 1300 730 574. This programme excites us because we have seen how it can help!

We would like to wish you guys well for tomorrow and the weeks to come. No pressure but we are expecting great things!!
