In the aftermath of the US Capitol being attacked by far-right insurrectionists last week, victim's rights lawyer Carrie Goldberg writes: Those of us in the field of domestic violence recognize the behavior of the insurrectionists: their need for power and control, their sense of entitlement, their appetite for destruction, and their false sense of victimhood. What abusers all have in common is how they prioritize their own desire above the safety, peace, and autonomy of their victim. Sometimes, the desire itself is to take away the other’s safety, peace and autonomy. Goldberg recognises the escalating and repetitive DV Cycle of Violence in Trump’s insurrectionist army: 1. Tension-building: the abuser engages in constant minor fights, the victim feels increasing dread 2. Explosive violence: the abuser has a violent physical outburst, making threats of further violence 3. Honeymoon period: the abuser is seemingly apologetic, remorseful and even loving, promising to change. And while US Republicans who supported the insurrection are now falling over themselves to call for peace, Goldberg says: The biggest mistake we could make right now as a country is to fool ourselves into staying in this abusive relationship.
