25.01.2022 It's NAIDOC Week and the Aboriginal Learning on Country (ALoC) team have been hard at work planting native foods in the Ngeragi Ya:yun garden at our sister site Monarto Safari Park. Designed, built and planted entirely by the team, this garden helps to educate school groups about the uses and importance of native bush foods. Running since 2010 and supported by our partners Santos: Proudly Australian and Murraylands and Riverland Landscape Board, the ALoC program provides... training for local Aboriginal students in the areas of conservation and land management. Our school-based trainees also use their training towards achievement of the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE). Through this program, members of the ALoC team combine the skills they have learned through their studies with their own traditional knowledge of the land, helping to play a major role in managing the natural asset we’ve been entrusted with. We're so proud of the 26 students who have graduated from the program since its inception. See more

23.01.2022 Mwahahaha.... we have some frighteningly great news! Our friends at Adelaide Haunted Horizons Ghost Tours - the team behind Adelaide's Z-Ward Tours will be conducting ‘Adelaide Zoo After Dark’ tours and paranormal investigations starting on Sunday 27th December! As well as tours, Alison, Kag and team will also be conducting paranormal investigations in Minchin House, the Rotunda and the Noctornal House. So the big question is, are you brave enough? Rather than grisly, the... tours will be an intriguing journey through the history of Adelaide Zoo, where you'll learn about the former residents both human and animal, and hear the haunting stories and mysterious goings-on as told by the keepers past and present. The Paranormal Investigations will see you explore Minchin House, the Rotunda and the old Nocturnal House with state of the art paranormal equipment to uncover the mysterious and tell the stories behind the zoo and its animals. To find out more, head to: www.adelaidezoo.com.au/afterdark See more

23.01.2022 It's Fan Photo Friday - we love sharing your images so thank you so much to all of you who pop them onto our community page. Thank you to Leighton Cassebohm for sharing this fantastic 3-D image of Adelaide Zoo's meerkats on sentry duty. When it comes to meerkats it's a real case of teamwork - they work together to keep a lookout, gather food and take care of their young - so it's no wonder they are always so busy! Thinking of visiting the meerkats this weekend? Please make sure to book in advance to avoid disappointment www.adelaidezoo.com.au/tickets

22.01.2022 What a year it's been! Although the period since our last impact report saw us through another COVID-19 closure and plenty of ups and downs, we've still been working hard to make a difference and save species from extinction. And let's not forget that none of this would have been possible without YOU, our amazing visitors, members, partners and supporters. From the bottom of our paw-shaped hearts, we want to say thank you for helping us to save species and connect people with nature.

20.01.2022 What a great day for South Australia as we lead the country in saying ‘goodbye and good riddance’ to items in the first phase of South Australia’s single-use plastics ban. From today, the supply of single-use plastic straws, cutlery and stirrers (including bioplastic options) ends throughout the state. We are working closely in our store and the operators of our function and café facilities at Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park to ensure we roll out this and other plastic...-free initiatives (COVID-19 considerations permitting). And, let's not forget that the impact of plastics on wildlife is of great concern. For example, Australian sea lions like Adelaide Zoo’s Ady and Tasko and Pelicans are often victims of plastic bags which are mistakenly digested as a cuttlefish or squid. Some simple ways we can all help to avoid plastics harming wildlife is to take care of the way that we dispose of them. Cut any loops on items such as facemasks and bags to avoid them hooking onto an animal Secure your garbage tightly to avoid it blowing away or washing into waterways Clean up rubbish and avoid littering As a leading conservation charity, we always want to achieve more and we’re excited to say that we are currently working with Plastic Free SA to become a Plastic Free Champion. Watch this space for more updates on this in the near future. In the meantime, well done SA. See more

16.01.2022 There's always one... How sweet are these Emperor Tamarins? Usually weighing less than 500 grams, these mini monkeys are playful and friendly, with a speckled brown body that ends in a long, orange tail. And who can look past that magnificent moustache? What are your favourite facts about these tiny tamarins?

16.01.2022 Thanks to all those who voted to rewatch our Panda Live with keeper Connie and, of course, the lovely Wang Wang and Fu Ni. Enjoy and take care all.

15.01.2022 Friends, it's been a cr*ppy year and we're sure everyone is in need of a laugh! Now, we're sure you've heard of Black Friday but tomorrow we're announcing something a bit different. Stay tuned! #giveacrap

15.01.2022 Many of you might know that Puspa the Sumatran Orangutan is very tidy by nature. Keepers will often find her cleaning up around her exhibit or mimicking keepers by packing away her enrichment once she's finished with it. Not one to miss a tidying opportunity, in the video below Puspa chose to come inside and join Keeper Pij while he was cleaning indoor areas of the enclosure. You can hear Pij in the background encouraging Puspa as she takes to the floor with a bucket of soapy water and a broom. Who else needs someone like Puspa to help around at their house? A big thanks to corporate sponsors LaDonna Hygiene for helping to keep Adelaide Zoo's bathrooms up to Puspa's standard.

13.01.2022 It's only Wednesday but we couldn't help but share this fabulous fan photo by Fran Mussared of the goregous Nolean. Thanks for sharing Fran! The little-yet not-so-little giraffe is a real favourite at Adelaide Zoo - winning the hearts of all who have the pleasure of seeing her. As an ambassador for her species Nolean, along with Kimya, helps to tell the story of the plight of giraffes in the wild. While many people believe giraffes are doing well the IUCN reports that t...he giraffe is vulnerable to extinction with its wild population continuing to decline. They are, in fact, going through a 'Silent Extinction.' However, there is a ray of light - over the last five years there has been an increase in research and conservation programs including a tracking program that Zoos SA has contributed towards. Would you like to visit Nolean and find out how conservation programs that we support are helping her wild cousins? Please book your tickets online at www.adelaidezoo.com.au/tickets We can't wait to see you! See more

12.01.2022 Now that's what you call silly billies (see what we did there). Thanks to keeper Amelia for sharing this great video of goat pranksters Kasper and Jynx having a glorious time in our Variety Children's Zoo. In truth, goats aren't that silly at all. In fact, they are highly intelligent animals who, to ensure they stay happy and mentally stimulated, receive daily fun enrichment from their keepers. The goats love to extract treats from a specially-made barrels and also love playing on balance beams and seesaws. Although it looks like play, these activities are a great way to ensure they regularly exercise their fantastic balance skills. Want to see our goats? Make sure to pop along but don't forget to book online first and to observe our COVID-19 measures so we all stay safe. www.adelaidezoo.com.au/tickets

12.01.2022 Ever seen a soggy emu? Today Keeper Amelia captured the moment Cecil the emu shakes off after enjoying a cooling bath. With weather like this, we might just join him next time!

08.01.2022 Look who's out and about! Our five-week-old giraffe calf is spending more and more time out of the Giraffe House, exploring and getting to know his fellow giraffe companions, one-year-old Nolean (pictured here for size comparison - the calf is so tiny!) and 16-year old Kimya. But one thing is missing... this boy needs a name! Our keepers are calling on you to help give this little one the perfect title. By voting for your favourite name, you could win a double pass to our Giraffe Feed experience including entry to Adelaide Zoo. Vote here. www.adelaidezoo.com.au/eve/giraffe-calf-naming-competition/

08.01.2022 Our Spotted Hyaenas are keeping cool-as during the hot spell. Keepers provide all species at Adelaide Zoo with misters, icy treats, shade and water play to help them beat the heat. Cooling enrichment is important for animals' welfare requirements. As well as allowing animals to stay cool, they are also being mentally stimulated and challenged, based on their natural behaviours and instincts. Our pets at home will also benefit from similar treatment - access to plenty of water, shade and icy treats like keeper Rachael prepared here will do the job. Thanks Rachael!

06.01.2022 Looks like these four Spinifex Hopping Mice didn't get the social distancing memo! Inhabiting the harsh arid zones of central Australia, these tiny nocturnal rodents avoid the blazing sun by sheltering in deep burrows hidden by clumps of grass. You can spot Adelaide Zoo's 22 cuties in the Nocturnal House. Make sure to book your tickets online in advance at www.adelaidezoo.com.au/tickets/. Thanks to keeper Jemma for the adorable snap!

04.01.2022 Looks like Southern Hairy-nosed Wombats Kibbar and Harriett know how to spend days like today... cuddled up together under the heat lamp in their burrow. In the wild, wombats' warrens provide shelter from the harsh Australian weather, so it's not surprising that this mother-daughter duo choose to spend the coldest parts of the day in bed! Thanks to keeper Jade for the adorable photo.

03.01.2022 Phew, it's hot! Obi the Pygmy Hippo has the right idea... splashing around in a cooling shower and resulting mud bath. Adelaide Zoo's animals receive enrichment on a daily basis to ensure their welfare and wellbeing, and that they stay nice and cool in summer! Enrichment can vary from cooling showers or baths to icy blood treats and frozen fruit and vegetables. Want to spend this summer weather relaxing in the shade at the zoo? Book your tickets online here. https://www.adelaidezoo.com.au/tickets/
