25.01.2022 A powerful and moving experience. And that’s just some of the reviews - a must see if you are in the area.

24.01.2022 If only we could! I am sure many of us are missing our international travel

24.01.2022 For those of you disappointed that we are going to be missing out on costume historian Kate Strasdins visit this month with her lecture on dress and textiles in the 1920s - we hope you are pleased to hear it will be our next online lecture! This was such a huge era of fashion, with designers influencing style and changing the way people thought about clothes. Kates talk is also a look behind the scenes of the much-loved TV show, creating Phryne Fishers world and the flapper style - a style still very much admired today.

24.01.2022 Just stunning! An inspiration for Narrabri?

23.01.2022 Stunning photo of local student Leslie Fuller, a powerful homage to NAIDOC Week.

22.01.2022 The committee still get together every month or so, and at the moment we are trying to work out what path to take with lectures or non-lectures next year. Trying is the operative word!! Once we have come to a conclusion, we will let members and friends of Adfas know. The committee is very aware that the decision needs to be remunerative, logical, and a practical conclusion for everyone. Here are some of the committee, conducting a meeting in style!

22.01.2022 Jenny and Bones Falkiner were lucky enough to visit Van Gogh Alive at the Royal Hall of Industries, Moore Park today. This magnificent exhibition has been hailed as the most visited multi-sensory experience in the world, and critiqued as "the most anticipated exhibition of the year ... venture into a sensory journey like no other of its kind". Some wonderful quotations here too. (*Season extended until 20 December!)

21.01.2022 When Opera singer Alex Aldren returned to medicine to support the NHS during the COVID-19 pandemic, he wasnt expecting his musical talents to go viral at the same time. Alex has since teamed up with Barts Choir to release a single in support of their emergency COVID-19 appeal. When Alex was growing up, he decided to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a doctor. Music had always been a huge passion of Alexs but as a Junior Doctor he did not have any time to practic...e, so he decided to resign from his role at the hospital to put all of his efforts into becoming an opera singer. His opera career took off immediately and he travelled across the world to perform, but when COVID-19 hit, the entertainment industry closed down. With no upcoming performances, Alex spoke to his old manager to see if they needed an extra pair of hands on the wards. They immediately took him up on the offer, and Alex started working shifts at The Royal London, Whipps Cross and Newham Hospitals where he works in the A&E departments. On returning to the hospital, Alex met some of his old colleagues who knew that he had become an opera singer. When they had a quick break, a couple of them asked him to perform one of his favourite songs, Puccinis Nessun Dorma. Alex really missed performing so he was happy to oblige. Alex says: Although its an extremely stressful time in the NHS right now, the support and comradery between colleagues has been amazing. Im really enjoying being back to support Barts Health during the pandemic and Im glad I could give my colleagues a welcome distraction during our shift. Alex has since made a charity single with the Barts Choir, one of Londons largest professionally rehearsed choirs which was founded by nurses at Barts Hospital in 1965. 18.01.2022 Sculptures in the Scrub, a picnic area camping ground and walking track in Timallallie National Park near Baradine, takes in the award-winning Sculptures in the Scrub, a project that was four years in the making. Each sculpture is the result of an artist collaborating with local Aboriginal Elders and young people on a piece that tells a story of local Aboriginal history and culture. This image pictured here - if anyone remembers Bob Garling - Bob was principal of Baradine P...rimary school in the 70s - his son designed and sculpted this statue in bronze. It now takes pride of place as one of the sculptures in the scrub. #arts #culture #learning #sculpturesinthescrub #nswnationalparks #repost #baradine2020

Thoroughly enjoyable talk, beautiful images, and now itching to travel again! Thank you Ian! And thank you ADFAS Brisbane for your generous gift #artandcultureandalucia

17.01.2022 Congratulations to Bellata Public School who are just about to start their very own Picasso Cows project! They are the lucky recipients of this years ADFAS Narrabri Young Arts award. Each year we select a school or arts related student group to receive this award. Bellata School are putting the funds towards decorating and painting a life-size fibreglass cow model. Picasso Cows is a creative initiative taken up by many schools across Australia. It is a curriculum program designed to educate primary school children about the Australian dairy industry and the health and nutrition benefits of dairy foods as part of a balanced diet. We cant wait to see the end result! #arts #culture #learning #adfasyoungarts

16.01.2022 Its official! Lazy Daisy has been given a name, a hat and a bell, and is ready to embark on an adventure with the students at Bellata School. 15.01.2022 So disappointed to be missing out this month on Charlotte Natteys lecture! However, we hope to see her later in the yearif things go to plan! A little taste of whats to come: From a shaky start in the new penal colony, the discovery of gold in Australia in the 19th Century led to great prosperity, wealth and, of course, population growth. The distinct and often unique jewellery that was created from our Australian goldfields is a fascinating part of our history. Many of these pieces are now highly sought after both here and overseas. #arts #culture #goldfields

13.01.2022 These local sandstone caves and formations have been formed over many thousands of years. In these photos you can see the rocks have bands of a material rich in quartz layered in the sandstone and this has been left behind as the softer sandstone succumbs to the wear and tear of wind, rain, heat and cold. The Sandstone Caves are an Aboriginal site for the local Gamilaraay people. We are lucky to have this as a local visiting spot!

13.01.2022 Farewell Barb, such a tireless worker and a beautiful soul we wish to convey our deepest condolences to Barbs family, friends and the Moree community.

12.01.2022 And to follow up on this mornings inspiring story, here is Alex Aldrens charity recording with the Barts Choir, one of Londons largest professionally rehearsed choirs which was founded by nurses at Barts Hospital in 1965. Together they decided on the song Panis Angelicus by Cesar Frank, because of its timeless beauty and message of hope. (Please see this mornings earlier post - a wonderful story!).

10.01.2022 Its official! Lazy Daisy is now complete and today she kicked off on a tour of Bellata. Meanwhile local Georgia Kirkby gave the children at Bellata School an insight into the Australian dairy industry and the handling of dairy cows, with the help of Blossom and her 5 day old calf. The children had plenty of questions to ask, including where did the calf come from! Theres no doubt about it, the children and teachers have done a magnificent job with their painting. The next stage will be entering the 2020 Picasso Cows competition - and we wish them the best of luck! ADFAS Narrabri are proud to have been able to fund such an exciting project with our 2020 Young Arts donation to the school.

08.01.2022 The phenomenal success of the Miss Fishers Murder Mysteries has a great deal to do with the aesthetic of the TV show 1920s Melbourne and a glamourous protagonist! This lecture looks at dress in the 1920s, the designers who were influencing style and the developments that were changing the way people thought about clothes. It is also a look behind the scenes, creating Phryne Fishers world and the flapper style so synonymous with the decade. It was a period that began to em...brace sportswear, leisurewear, shortened hems as well as outrageous parties. Our speaker Kate Strasdin, a UK Arts Society lecturer, has worked with objects of dress and textiles in museums for almost twenty years in curatorial positions. 04.01.2022 Completed in 1998, Antony Gormleys huge Angel of the North, situated at Gateshead, England, is 20 metres tall with wings spanning 54 metres across. The angel, like many of Gormleys sculptures, is based on a cast of his own body. Our next ADFAS@HOME lecture centres around Gormleys other magnificent works - and some of these are situated at our very own Lake Ballard in Western Australia. The Arts Society lecturer Rosalind Whyte will take us on this journey soon ... more to come! #arts #culture #learning #adfasnarrabri

03.01.2022 Under a blazing Western Australian sun in December 2002, British installation artist Antony Gormley gazed out upon the brilliant white expanse of Lake Ballard, an ancient salt lake 55km west of the small outback town of Menzies. The celebrated sculptor had hit upon of a very curious plan. North of Kalgoorlie, Menzies was part of the frenetic gold rush of the late 1890s and is now a virtual ghost town. When Gormley arrived, he had an ambitious sculpture project in mind to mark... the 50th anniversary of the Perth International Arts Festival. First he sought permission from local Aboriginal people for the use of almost 10 square kilometres of the barren salt lake. Then he approached the citizens of Menzies and, after some persuading, spent the next six months capturing digital scans of 51 of them. These scans were then reduced in size by two thirds, cast into moulds, and transformed into 51 bizarre stainless steel sculptures that somehow contrived to represent their subjects innards. The strangely extraterrestrial figures were then placed at intervals across the blank canvas of the million-year-old salt lake, making for an extremely eerie and effective installation, especially at dawn and dusk. ADFAS@HOME Members will have received the link this week (via email) to Rosalind Whytes fascinating lecture of Antony Gormleys achievements. We hope you can get together and watch it with friends!

03.01.2022 Counting down to our Christmas lunch this Sunday 6 December at the home of Jenny and Bones Falkiner, Murrumbilla, Killarney Gap Road. With an 11am start we will be running through a quick AGM. (No need to avoid that bit, all positions are filled!) We would really appreciate members’ input into the way forward next year, along with your vote on a special renewal membership rate for 2021. We will be excited to fill you in on our new 2021 lecture program which is almost finalised. RSVPs to [email protected]. We hope you can join fellow ADFAS members and friends for a festive lunch and a glass of champagne!

02.01.2022 We are missing our fabulous cinema lecture venue at The Crossing Theatre, Narrabri. While social restrictions have kept the cinemas closed, renovations have been taking place inside and will be completed next month. Fingers crossed for a return to normality, either at the end of this year or early next year. The arts and entertainment industry have suffered in this pandemic - financially, productively, and socially. Heres to a better 2021! Meanwhile, click on t...his TryBooking link to view our latest ADFAS@HOME fabulous online lecture - Dress Detective - Miss Fishers Wardrobe - presented by Kate Strasdin! https://www.trybooking.com/BKVMP Available to view anytime up until 20 August. #arts #culture #adfasnarrabri #lecturesonline

01.01.2022 Had a lovely time last week with visiting Association of ADFAS National Treasurer (and Chair of ADFAS Byron Bay) John Griffiths and his wife Carol, pictured here at our iconic Sawn Rocks visiting spot.
