23.01.2022 PROJECT SHOWCASE: Merry Beach Residence "It has an open and relaxed feel to it, particularly on the first floor where we spend most of our time. The curved spaces and striking brickwork add interest to the internal spaces, including in the main bedroom which also looks out both south and north to sea and national park." - The Owners
22.01.2022 PROJECT SHOWCASE: Mulga Street Residence "The house has been open several times on Sustainable House Day, and each time has excited great public interest because of the spectacular internal spaces that are integral to the design. The house is a joy to live in, and exceeds expectations since we came from living in a fridge in winter and an oven in summer." - The Owners

15.01.2022 PROJECT SHOWCASE: Dianella Street Studio I am very satisfied with the overall efficiency and economy of the building. It is compact and functional with everything within easy reach like a pocket Venus. It is comfortable in summer and cosy in winter: the high thermal mass, trombe wall, Solomit ceiling and other heavy insulation mean inside temperatures are relatively stable compared with outside ones. Heating has been minimal using only a Dimplex oil column. Good cross-ventilation makes overnight cooling easy in summer and the Isabella grapevine on the deciduous eave is a pretty, shady (and tasty) seasonal feature. - The Owner
14.01.2022 The house that started a legacy... Our first project in Baker Gardens This fit for purpose home offers so much in terms of liveability, with the highlight (for us and the client) being its GREAT energy efficiency by using passive house design principles
14.01.2022 PROJECT SHOWCASE: Bradbury House Transformation "The final test of any architecture must be the liveability of the result considered broadly as a habitation in an environment that has both natural and other built elements. For us, as the inhabitants of this wonderful piece of living sculpture, it passes the test with flying colours" - The Owners

12.01.2022 STUCK IN STUDIO: This week in third year architecture Jess has been working on a scale model of a reinforced concrete fire look out tower to be located on Mount Ainslie. What better way to represent precast concrete than with precast plaster. a bit messy, but a lot of fun. Below are some process photos of the panels being made. Stay tuned for images of the final project!

12.01.2022 PROJECT SHOWCASE: Horton Eco House "I am living in a house full of curves and high ceilings, every direction an interesting shape. It is filled with light, is warm in winter and cool in summer with no power bills. I wake up happy in my house everyday and I plan to live there for the rest of my life" - The Owner

10.01.2022 Greetings from the team at APA! As the festive season approaches we're reflecting on the clients and projects that have made a challenging year a memorable one for us. First up is a story from the charming Canberra neighbourhood, Baker Gardens. Our team shares a bond with the community and residents where one home went on to inspire five further projects (3 in the same street )... We'll be posting more about these beautiful, energy efficient homes before the year ends. Stay tuned!

09.01.2022 Could you envisage this design installation perched amongst the Freefall Pin Oaks at the National Arboretum Canberra? Produce a design that engages with the landform and results in modification of the sites existing ground level while encouraging some level of physical engagement from the user. It should enhance the forest experience for visitors to the Arboretum for the next century. Depict through drawings the site’s character and how you intend users to engage with the si...te and the design. - The landscape architecture assignment of third year architecture student Jessica Koeck. The initial set out for the viewing platform is based on Walter Burley Griffin’s proposed water and land axis. This works well with the established forest layout as the pathways don’t interrupt the allées. The road crossing has multiple entry and exit points evidently providing opportunities to join in with the adjacent pathway networks. The timber pathway allows the user to experience the process of a journey to the viewing platforms. As the user walks beneath the distinctive structures the perforations create a stimulating experience engaging their imagination. The aim of the viewing platforms is to give a special place to the Canberra community where celebrations can be held amongst the Freefall Pin Oaks. By including the perforation of a bluebell, the floral emblem of the Australian Capital Territory, on the structures this enhances the history of Canberra with acknowledgment to the Centenary of Canberra.
07.01.2022 2014 - Concrete Relationships We kick off the year with a pinch of black oxide, 2tbs of crushed glass, a handful of black stone, and quartz to taste. Best wishes to a year full of creativity, beauty, and success.
07.01.2022 3 years in the making, a place for the owners to live, work, and play. We revitalised a 1950's Canberra home in O'Connor with Passiv Haus principles, including an upper level addition to compliment the existing, then added a mountain hut inspired studio to the site. What a journey! A massive thank you to Mariam who was a big part of the design process...

01.01.2022 Earlier this year we completed a major renovation in O'Connor on an old Canberra home. The work involved good organisation of space, better access to natural light, maximising views, clever storage ideas, decorative joinery, and an architecture that complemented the existing. Thank you to Malin Paulsson for the support throughout the design process. Enjoy!
