01.01.2022 Recently radio station 3BA asked to interview me about ADHD in light of recent events in Melbourne, where a 27 year old man, Henry Hammond, murdered 25 year old Courtney Herron in Royal Park, Parkville. Hammond’s lawyer is attempting to use ADHD as part of his defence which has our ADHD community up in arms as it slurs all the positive things about being ADHD. There was also mention of Hammond possibly being on the Autism Spectrum [AS]. Another negative for our community a...s many families have both ADHD & AS in family members. The part that has me concerned is the possibility of a delusional disorder. What symptoms did he exhibit to have this said? Was he hearing voices? Has he in fact been misdiagnosed or has a comorbidity alongside ADHD? So many unclear answers. There is ONE thing abundantly clear regarding this horrid situation for both Henry Hammond & Courtney Herron ... Society has failed them. Both had, at minimum, severe mental health issues. At least for Hammond, he has either untreated neurological issues & possibly chemical imbalances. They have both slipped through the cracks in society as there is not enough help to cater for the explosion of mental health, neurological & addictive issues pervading our society. In recent days people have contacted me about their families or themselves. They need Hope & Education about themselves & not many people are able to quickly get to crux of individual issues as ADHD & AS is subjective & very personal in how it affects each person. Unfortunately, the funding is not there to help the ones that need it most, those in the lower socio-economic groups. In this link, written by Gabrielle Hodson, a woman I have known for many years [hence why she called me about this as we are both trained journalists too], you will find a lot of strategies I wrote about over the years. I have to say Gabe ‘researched me’ well! Probably one of the better & more positive articles written about ADHD & myself over the years!
