24.01.2022 Throwback to life before Covid. My poor fluffy dogs are in Isolation. Thanks Gus (the real dog - spot him if you can) for modelling. #petcpr #petfirstaid #dogs #doggydaycare #cats #isolation
23.01.2022 If you know me or my dog you can imagine my surprise when I stayed at this holiday unit in Sassafras (before lockdown) and saw this above the bed. The whole ceiling had marks and images not drawn but ingrained in the wood. Freaky that it looks just like Harley. #freaky #harley #dogs #woodimages #surprise

20.01.2022 "Xylitol is estimated to be 100 times as toxic as chocolate to dogs." How much xylitol is poisonous to a dog? The dose of xylitol that can cause hypoglycemia in... the dog has been reported between 50 milligrams (mg) of xylitol per pound of body weight (100 mg per kg). The higher the dose ingested, the more the risk of liver failure. The most common source of xylitol poisoning that Pet Poison Helpline gets called about comes from sugar-free gum. With certain brands of gum, only 9 pieces of gum can result in severe hypoglycemia in a 45 pound (20kg) dog, while 45 pieces would need to be ingested to result in liver failure. With other common brands of gum (which contain 1 g/piece of gum), only 2 pieces would result in severe hypoglycemia, while 10 pieces can result in liver failure. As there is a large range of xylitol in each different brand and flavor of gum, it is important to identify whether a toxic amount has been ingested. If Xylitol is listed as the first three ingredients on the packet, the toxicity is high. The following Wrigley brands in Australia contain Xylitol EXTRA Professional Strongmint and Spearmint (recently discontinued) EXTRAWhite Lemon Lime (previously known as EXTRA Professional White Lemon Lime) FIVE Electro and Tempest Intake of very high doses of xylitol (225mg/lb or 500 mg/kg body weight) has been implicated in liver failure in dogs. What should I do if my dog eats something containing xylitol? If you suspect that your pet has eaten a xylitol-containing product, please contact your Veterinarian or Animal Emergency Centre immediately. Do not induce vomiting or give anything orally to your dog unless specifically directed to do so by your veterinarian. It is important to get treatment for your dog as quickly as possible. As some dogs may already be hypoglycemic, inducing vomiting can make them worse! Give your Vet or AEC the following information: *How much was ingested (if known) *What time (if known) *Dogs symptoms *The source of Xylitol (Xylitol is a sugar alcohol extracted from corn and corn fiber, birch, raspberries and plums. It is used to sweeten many products, including: Sugar-free gum, mints and other candy, Nicotine gum, Chewable vitamins, Certain prescription drugs, Dental hygiene products, Baked goods and now certain Peanut Butter) *Take the suspected packet or container with you *If the dog has vomited or had diarrhoea- take a sample Is there an antidote for xylitol toxicity? No. There is no antidote for xylitol toxicity, although treatment with sugar supplementation, IV fluids, and liver protective drugs are beneficial. The toxicity of xylitol for cats and other species is not documented at this time, although there has been some concern that other non-primate species (e.g., cats, ferrets, etc.) may react to xylitol in a similar manner as dogs.

16.01.2022 This is a Donutbandage! As the name suggests its in the shape of a donut; but does not contain chocolate (which is lucky cause that is bad for dogs) It just has the shape of donut and is used in case of punctured wounds, where a foreign object is protruding from the wound or body.... NEVER remove an imbedded object. Place a donut bandage over the object and secure with a further bandage usually tied in a figure 8. Try to keep the animal as still as possible and seek veterinary care immediately. 08.01.2022 Last year in the US there was a Salmonella outbreak with Pigs Ears. Please use caution when purchasing these treats. I do not recommend Pigs Ears at all as they are high in fat, have a strong chance of causing choking and have no nutritional value. Always do your research on what is best for your pooch.

05.01.2022 Snakes and the fear of your dog or cat being bitten is one of the top reasons for taking a Pet First Aid Class. But what are your legal rights when a snake is on your property or in your path. The Law States:... "Snakes are protected by law in all states and territories of Australia and may not be killed unless they threaten life. Offences under the Nature Conservation Act 2014 carry severe penalties. It is an offence under the National Parks and Wildlife Act to kill or remove a snake from its environment, with fines of up to $10,000 and two years imprisonment enforceable." If you find a snake on your property please call a snake catcher immediately. DO NOT KILL THE SNAKE! Unless you, your family or pets are in danger. If you think you wont be fined.... I am aware of a $5000 fine being enforced to a property owner who reported a snake to Council but ended up killing it before they arrived. What a shock when that fine came in the mail. If your pet is bitten DO NOT KILL the snake and take it to the vet...just get your Pet to an emergency centre immediately.
