20.01.2022 4 Symptoms of a Bad Fuel Filter We often encounter car related issues that could be symptoms of a clogged fuel filter. When the fuel filter clogs up, it starves the engine by preventing required fuel to enter the combustion chamber. Here are some warning signs that’ll help you troubleshoot the problem: 1. Acceleration feels sluggish... If you’ve owned the car for a long time and notice drop in engine power, it could be due to clogged fuel filter. The car might run fine at city speeds but when you take in on the highway and run it at high rpms for long, the dirty fuel filter will not allow the required volume of fuel to pass through. After you’ve checked the things like spark plugs, MAF sensor and air filter, it’s a good idea to check if the fuel filter is not dirty. As you accelerate, the engine demands more fuel. But a blockage in fuel line will result in engine running lean (too much air in the combustion chamber). The white deposit on the spark plug is also a tell-tale sign of lean engine combustion. Also, in modern cars, you’ll most likely get engine running lean warning when you use an ECU scanner to find trouble codes. 2. Engine Misfires under Load When the engine fuel starvation can also lead to misfires when you accelerate. Some cars will also make it dramatic with pops and bangs coming out of the exhaust. As a driver of the misfiring vehicle, you’ll notice when engine loosing power when you try to accelerate. The misfire might not happen when you’re just accelerating smoothly. So putting pedal to the metal in higher gear is good way to check how engine performs under load. 3. Engine Stalls When the blockage is severe, the car might not even be driveable. It might idle fine but as soon as you put it in gear and try to move, it’ll stall. You’ll experience this only if you ignore the above-mentioned symptoms of a dirty fuel filter. Learn what to do when engine overheats 4. Noisy Fuel Pump When there is blockage in the fuel line, the fuel pump has to work extra hard to circulate the fuel. The increased pressure in the fuel line due to clogged fuel filter, make the fuel pump struggle. Most of the times the fuel pump will make a whining sound that clearly audible if you put your ear near the fuel cap. Some cars won’t show symptoms of a bad fuel filter Car manufacturers know that most people ignore servicing the fuel filter. Therefore, some cars comes with a mechanism that bypasses fuel filter if it’s blocked. The result is that the fuel pressure is maintained at the fuel injectors even though the fuel is not filtered properly. Source: motoringjunction.com.au

04.01.2022 When you look at your total car running costs, fuel is up there as one of the most significant ongoing expenses. Checking FuelWatch and educating yourself on fuel facts will help you save, but there are also some simple driving habits that reduce your car’s fuel consumption and therefore your overall cost. Plus, by using less fuel your car is producing less emissions so you’re helping your wallet and the environment.... 1. Minimise accelerating and braking. Hard accelerating increases fuel use dramatically, and braking wastes the energy that has been used to get the car up to speed. 2. Where possible and safe, use cruise control on higher speed highways to help maintain a more consistent speed. Also consider travelling at a reduced speed, as wind resistance, and therefore fuel use, increases quickly when your car is travelling at a higher speed. 3. Change up through the gears. Driving in a lower gear than necessary and revving the engine hard wastes fuel. An automatic transmission will shift up through the gears quicker if you ease back on the accelerator once the car has gained enough speed. 4. Use air conditioning only when necessary. Air conditioners increase fuel use by about 10 per cent. However, at speeds of more than 80km/hr, light use of air conditioning is better for fuel consumption than an open window that increases wind resistance. Image of person adjusting air con 5. Don't warm up or idle your engine. By switching off the engine, even for a short period, you'll save more fuel than is used to restart the engine. 6. Fill your fuel tank only to the first click of the fuel nozzle. Any extra fuel can be spilled or lost from the tank's overflow. 7. Keep your tyre pressure up to the recommended level. Low pressure increases rolling resistance and fuel use. Find out your car's optimum tyre pressure. 8. Remove unnecessary weight and roof racks. Unnecessary weight increases fuel consumption. Roof racks and spoilers increase wind resistance and fuel consumption. 9. Service your car regularly. Keeping your car properly serviced and tuned will minimise its emissions and fuel use. Here's how to do a basic car check. 10. When possible and practical, consider sharing some car journeys with others or reducing your personal car use.
