22.01.2022 It won't be long before migrant waders such as this Bar-tailed Godwit depart north on their long journey to summer breeding grounds in the northern hemisphere. This individual was one of about 50 that I stumbled upon feeding in the shallow mudflats at Merimbula, NSW last week.

20.01.2022 This Eastern Yellow Robin was one of a pair, astutely studying its quarry amongst fallen timber near a small stream flowing rapidly, following a heavy downpour of rain in the Warby Ranges today.

17.01.2022 The Lace Monitor (Varanus varius) is Victoria's largest reptile but this young individual has some growing to do before reaching adult size. Lace Monitors are opportunistic predators often feeding on carrion but can be seen searching tree hollows looking for bird nestlings. This one was spotted along a roadside with some large old Grey Box adjoining the upper Gunbower Creek area.

16.01.2022 Lake Cullen is roaring with life at the moment. This pair of White-Bellied Sea-eagle are taking advantage of the changed environmental conditions feasting on a plethora of European Carp along with a host of other raptors and fish eating birds including Black Kite, Whistling Kite, Australian Pelican and Silver Gull.

15.01.2022 Whilst their numbers are secure in the north and west of Australia in south-east Australia populations of Grey-crowned babbler have reduced by more than 90% due to land clearing, habitat fragmentation and modification. GCB's live in family groups of up to 15 individuals dominated by a breeding pair with subordinate birds helping to raise young. Today I found this solitary bird in a patch of bush in Axe Creek where there used to be a healthy colony up until the start of the 2000's. I last recorded a pair in this patch in May 2006 and since then they disappeared until this lone bird returned.

13.01.2022 It's a bumper year for wetland birds. These two Australian Shelduck were among a small group on Lake Tuchewop. They took flight as I approached and managed to fire a couple of shots capturing this silhouette pose.

07.01.2022 With three hungry mouths to feed this mum has her work cut out over the next few weeks. Australian Darter feed exclusively on fish and are big consumers of the introduced carp where they are found in big numbers in our irrigation storages and wetlands.

03.01.2022 It is estimated there are less than 100 Brolga occurring in the northern Victoria irrigation area. So it was encouraging to see this pair taking flight with a sub-adult just south of Dingee yesterday on my drive back from Gunbower forest.
