03.01.2022 Shared with permission from the family. A few weeks ago I caught up with Kyuss and his family at Allowyn Gardens. It was great to see them all again as it has been a while. In 2015 Kyuss was 2 1/2 when I photographed him. He was the child of a guy that used to work for us.... Kyuss was like most 2-year-olds, laughed played, and interacted. At 18 months Kyuss was diagnosed with Sanfilippoa terminal disease that attacks the central nervous system, causing fatal brain damage and eventually death. It is motor neuron degenerative and life expectancy is between 10-20 years. Basically, Kyuss is missing an enzyme that breaks down the complex sugar molecules throughout the body's cells, and without this enzyme, toxic waste builds up within each cell, eventually causing it serious damage. Heartbreakingly, there is no cure for this hideous disease. There are 4 types, A, B, C, D. Kyuss has type A, which is the most severe, yet the most common. Kyuss is almost 8 years old now and the disease has really progressed. He hasn't laughed, talked, or cried in almost 2 years. Walking is getting difficult. Despite Kyuss's difficulties, he had absolutely no difficulties showing his love and devotion to his family. Thank you for allowing me to share Kyuss's journey, Nikki Harris. https://www.sanfilippo.org.au/campaigns-for-/hope-for-kyuss
