19.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday (it's a thing...I think?) to more blasts from the past. This time, the exit of Mt Aspiring on the descent from Bevan Col. A series of successive abseils off rusty old pitons & tat follows a raging gut of melt water, the spray kicking up in your face, the noise of raging waterfalls deafening. If it's not shitting with rain, the spray from the water will soak you from head to toe anyway. It's a game of Where's Wally; looking for the next piece of dodgy gear to ...descend from, while edging along greasy rock in mountaineering boots. It's a sensory overload that you can't wait to get out of and, yet, once it's over, leaves you kinda wishing you were back in the thick of it... classic type 2 fun! . . . @kailasgear #madetocllimb . . . 19.01.2022 This fleeting sunrise was just about the only moment of physical and mental reprieve from the calf burning push up 'The Ramp' on Mt Aspiring; a notorious icy slope with an unsurvivable fall under it that, once the sun hits, is simply not a good place to hang around. It's the most accident prone part of the mountain for a range of reasons, but by far my most memorable. Wishing @narcoleptic.adventurer and I could be back in NZ right now for prime-time climbing season... but l...ooks like we'll be waiting another year! . Unfortunately this image is really grainy, having kept the same ISO settings as earlier in the night. Oddly enough, ISO settings didn't seem a priority while going hands free with crampons on a 60 degree ice ramp . . . 10.01.2022 Been spending time recently burrowing through years of photos, discarding old ones, and finding old gems like this. So it's #ThrowbackThursday to @narcoleptic.adventurer abseiling off the Mt Aspiring North Buttress, on Christmas Eve last year! The descent feels like the weight's off your shoulders...and that it's all (metaphorically) downhill from there. In reality the descent is where most accidents happen. Mostly through complacency, but also environmental factors. If you... look closely, you'll see the ~300m wide, ~5m deep crown of an enormous avalanche that went off the morning we made our ascent. It was triggered by a cornice collapse from the early morning sun and, luckily, we were coming up The Ramp on the shaded side instead. Another group were due to ascend via this side of the mountain, and saw the slide happen roughly 30 minutes before they would have been in the firing line. Some people say this aspect of mountaineering is scary. On the contrary, I would say it's fascinating and humbling to be making crucial route decisions that put you in the right places and the right time. . . . @kailasgear #madetocllimb . . .
