18.01.2022 AdsumDad and I are cleaning up/reorganising his shed while we’re between jobs. Over the course of 60 years, AdsumDad has built up quite the collection of hand tools. . To help me remember (and because it’s interesting!) I’m planning to set aside Friday IG posts as #flashbackfriday and documenting what we find. . First up, this little beauty. It’s called a router plane, tooth plane or a granny’s tooth. Before power tools, this was used to create grooves in timber for shelves,... slats and the like. The blade depth can be adjusted (which is how you cut deeper into the timber - you take a few passes at it, just like a power router.) Want a different width groove? Change the width of the blade. . Depending on your project, you can use a saw to cut the sides of the channel, and then clean up with the plane. I’ve also used it to clean out dovetails. . Woodworkers - do you have one of these? 17.01.2022 On the first day of Christmas, my body gave to me... Four doc appointments/ Three ultrasounds/ Two injections/ And an MRI on my knee...... . . . . . What a time for the body to pack up. guides cortisone injections in each shoulder, scan on my wrist shows up a rather large ganglion, and I’ve somehow managed to screw the medial meniscus in my knee. Doc’s orders were to stay off my feet and not list anything heavy for the next few days. BAHAHAHAHAHA... . So, hopefully in the next day or two the cortisone kicks in because I’ve got work to do. 09.01.2022 Our old and venerable almond tree, that’s been next to the shed for as long as the shed has been standing - Nay, longer than I’ve been alive - did not survive this last heatwave. . 07.01.2022 My favourite bit of making charcuterie boards is what AdsumDad calls teaching them to swim . The tub has food-grade mineral oil in it - I use that rather than nut or seed oils because I want to avoid triggering anyone’s allergies. . I let them soak for a while so the oil really gets into the fibres, and gives it a measure of water resistance. Once they’ve soaked long enough, I let them drain, then wipe off any excess oil and apply a little food safe wax to bring out the ...shine. . The one on the left is getting shipped to a client tomorrow (blackwood, with a maple and cherry accent stripe). The other two were a fun exercise in using scrap timber (Queensland Silver Ash, with accents of maple, cherry and walnut). 01.01.2022 Weekend work: I sanded the side that was getting stripped in the last post, and stripped the varnish from the other side. The cup of what looks like molasses is what I’ve stripped off of *just* these two bits...there’s still half a dozen boards to go. . Today I’ll sand the remaining side on these pieces, and strip the next piece. (After stripping the varnish I’m using water-based turps to clean off any residue, and I like my surfaces to dry completely before I commence sandi...ng.) . AdsumDad says the veneer on this desk is American Oak, which then got stained down to the shade you saw originally. It’s a beautiful grain...I think the original stain has remained in the grain lines and made them stand out more. 01.01.2022 JACKPOT! These three unassuming pieces of timber were packing in a shipment of timber at my lumber supplier. My tame lumber guy set them aside and gave them to me when I came by for another order, because he had a feeling. . They’re all about 1m long, and about 40x40 square.
