25.01.2022 Are you aged 12 to 25? Advance Diversity Services is applying for funding for an intergenerational project. The project will involve young people interviewing older people to document their stories, which will be produced as podcasts. These podcasts will then be available on the ADS website for the general public to listen to. Young people will be trained and supported by a youth worker as they work on this project. A virtual event will be held to celebrate the work the young people have done. To apply for funding, we need some information from young people. Your contribution in filling in the following questionnaire will ensure that our application is based on the opinions of young people. Scan the QR code below to fill in the survey on your phone. Or access the survey via this link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NVGMKL7

24.01.2022 Nurses Make the Difference is the theme of World Diabetes Day in 2020 highlighting the crucial role nurses play in the fight against the disease. Six million more nurses are needed worldwide to ensure prompt treatment, provide self-management training and psychological support for people with diabetes to help prevent complications, and to tackle the risk factors for type 2 diabetes to help prevent the condition. There is also a significant need for more education and funding to equip nurses to support people living with diabetes and those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. #NursesMakeTheDifference

22.01.2022 Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 in most countries to recall the end of hostilities of First World War on that date in 1918 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. The Australian War Memorial hosts our nation’s key Remembrance Day commemoration, and Australians also observe one minute’s silence, at 11 am, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

19.01.2022 Hi my name is Sharon Yuan and I’m a fourth-year social work student about to finish my placement with Advance Diversity Services (ADS)! During my time here at ADS, I have learnt so much about culture, diversity and the extraordinary work ADS does with CALD communities. As a soon to be social work graduate, I am passionate about social justice, inclusivity and working with women and children. Through this placement, I have been blessed with so many different opportunities to d...evelop my skills and build my network. At ADS, I have been working closely with the Settlement team under the Specialised and Intensive Services (SIS) and the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS). Through the SIS program, I have learnt about the barriers and challenges refugees face from their journey to their settlement in Australia. Coming into placement during Covid, has brought on many unprecedented challenges in the way we work with people and communities. I have been providing support to our Community Officers in the SETS program to co-facilitate online Zoom sessions with their community reference groups and provide any technical assistance. Because of Covid, I have had to quickly learn and adapt to reimagining different ways of communicating and engaging with communities. I have also been leading the Emergency Relief (ER) Program and have witnessed the direct impacts of Covid on families and how this has led to increased complexity and need of support for those affected. I have felt so welcomed by the ADS team since day one and have had such great experiences being a part of this team that I will be staying on as a volunteer after my placement ends. 14.01.2022 Thank you to Hannah who has done such great work since she started volunteering with ADS as a homework tutor in September 2020. Hannah (whose full name is Khanddorj Uranchimeg) came to Australia in 2016 to study college and is now studying her master’s degree at University of Wollongong. She says: ‘I work as a volunteer in The Kogarah Storehouse and Advance Diversity Services and recently I established a not-for-profit organisation called Aus-Mon Community Services & Develo...pment Inc. to help the Mongolian community in Australia. ‘COVID has meant I’ve had to do most of my meetings and study through online platforms, and I’ve been unable to visit my family back in Mongolia. On the other hand, it has given me opportunity to see how people can support each other and how we can handle difficult situations together. ‘Working with dear children and encouraging them to study and express themselves is the most fascinating thing I’ve ever done. Their imaginations and kind hearts always touch my heart and I feel privileged to do this work with ADS. ‘I would say to newly arrived migrants that, when you are staying in Australia, ADS will always back up you as a family. They are always keen to find the best way forward and the right solutions for you.’ See more

14.01.2022 The International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to highlight and appreciate the important contributions that older people make to society and to raise awareness of the challenges related to ageing in today’s world such as senescence and elder abuse. Older people have always played a significant role in society as leaders, caretakers and custodians of tradition. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted vulnerabilities in our elderly populations and the inadequacies of systems that claim to care for them. Celebrate an older person you know and love today by sending them a card or a gift or by visiting them if it is safe to do so.

13.01.2022 Today, via Zoom, ADS staff will hear about World AIDS Day from Nicolas Gonzalez, Health Promotion Officer | HIV & Related Programs (HARP) Unit, SESLHD. Tim, from Positive Life NSW, will also share his story as an Aboriginal man of the Kamilaroi Nation who has lived with HIV since 2000. A former enrolled nurse and community worker, he now advocates for vulnerable groups. Tim says being part of the brotherhood and sisterhood of humankind means we need to look out for each other. ‘We have a personal responsibility to look out for someone - and that can make a big difference to that person’s life.’ This year’s World AIDS Day theme is Global solidarity, shared responsibility. Rocking a red ribbon shows everyone especially people living with HIV and their families your support! #rocktheribbon

11.01.2022 Sri Lankan refugee Premakumar Subramaniam has achieved so much since February after being granted his Temporary Protection Visa (TPV), despite the onset of Covid-19 closures. After donating his long ponytail to a cancer charity earlier this year, he’s now doing his 510 hours of English classes at TAFE, with marked improvement in both speaking and listening skills. Prem is also keen to work. He completed three certified training courses, obtaining his National WHS General Cons...truction Induction Training with a white card to work in construction, Traffic Control Work training and another for Implementing a Traffic and Management Plan. Prem stays healthy by running five kilometres each day, riding his bike and walking in nature ... and he only takes cold showers, which may give us a clue to his dynamo energy. 10.01.2022 ‘Shaping Peace Together’ is the 2020 theme for International Day of Peace (IDP) observed around the world on September 21. It is relevant, given how COVID-19 has thrown our world into turmoil and forcibly reminded us that what happens in one part of the planet can impact people everywhere. The UN General Assembly has declared IDP as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. It also calls us to recognise the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote harmony and to celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic. Please join people around the world as we can shape peace together.

05.01.2022 On October 14, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, told the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly: We will recover from COVID-19. We must use this opportunity to build back better. We must work together to build a more equal, inclusive, sustainable, safer, healthier planet that respects all human rights. Any recovery that fails to address the root causes of inequality, political and economic instability and displacement condemns us to future crises. Today is Human Rights Day. Let’s use this opportunity to help our nation and our world prioritise human rights, ensure a vibrant civil society and free media, and create more accountable institutions. Know your rights and help spread the word.
