24.01.2022 Holwegner Quantas This is the second of our 2 original imported sires. A big powerful ram, and line bred to Huff Ranch/Heggemeier bloodlines and Huff Ranch ‘Extra Special’ in particulat. The breeders, Otis & Sylvia Holwegner were unfamiliar with the history behind the Qantas name, so inserted a ‘u’ in it as you would in normal English grammar. This ram obviously had a big influence right through the APS flock upon release, simply because we were locked into using both in the ...8 year quarantine program. For all his many caracse and growth attributes, there was no issue with that, but unfortunately, he ultimately proved to be a ‘Spider Syndrome’ carrier. This compromised our ongoing program somewhat, until the gene marker was identified. He had an outstanding son in 2440/85 (ET), which unfortunately, also proved to be a carrier. This ram was lost at Torrens Island due to very poor animal health/nutrition management, but we had semen stocks to try to produce clean descendants and then be in a position to gain the great carcase and growth attributes within this bloodline. Success came in the 1992 drop with Advancer 920016 (ET). This direct sire-line grandson of Holwegner Quantas was the first clean progeny to enter our breeding program. He was also entered in the National Sire Progeny Test Scheme in its last year (this scheme assisted in the successful setting up of Lambplan) and came out the clear leader in this last test group. We used him in this year’s AI mating program. The second clean son of Advancer 2440/85 was Advancer 960359 (ET). As we advanced, this ram wasn’t used as much as we could have used him, but we were trying to outcross more initially to broaden our bloodline mix, but we also brought him back for this year’s AI mating program. The photos here show 1. Holwegner Quantas just before going into pre-embarkation quarantine in the USA. 2. The pedigree of Holwegner Quantas. 3. Holwegner Quantas 51 (closest) and BYU Supreme 21T3 (at back) at Torrens Island Quarantine Station after arrival from Cocos Island. 4. (A very small and poor quality shot) These two ram lambs from our ET first program at Torrens Island are just 10 weeks of age and are with their recipient Corriedale mothers. They are Advancer 2440/85 (closest top son of Quantas) and Advancer 2439/85 (more on him soon). 5. Pedigree of Advancer 160092 (ET) grandson of Quantas. See more

24.01.2022 Through an association we set up with USA Suffolk breeders, Steve & Shirley Cloud, we were successful in importing the 3rd top USA Suffolk ram, Mohawk Valley 'John' via semen in 2003 (last post). After undergoing the necessary protocols for Scrapie, we were then able to follow with 2 more outstanding rams in 2004. These were Wilt Suffolks 'The Ticket', and 'The Brick' from Batt Suffolks. Both these rams were strong in Brigham Young University bloodlines. They were proven perf...ormers away from the show scene, with 'The Brick' coming from a line of high performance within feed conversion trials. By this stage, the USA breeding and animal health authorities were moving on research results that showed certain blood types were less prone to Scrapie, whereas our authorities required us to test on the susceptible bloodlines, which were now getting harder to find. We used both these rams, plus 'John' in a big 2004 AI & ET breeding program that also included the first UK semen & embryo importations. More on them next post, but these are the pedigrees on ' The Ticket' & 'The Brick'. Both were used in this year's AI program. See more

10.01.2022 We have a date and time for the dispersal - 8th April, 10am WA Time. This equates to 11.30am SA time; 12noon for the eastern states, and 3pm in New Zealand. More updates soon.

06.01.2022 Here is the pedigree of one of our original import sires from the USA, Brigham Young Uni 21T3. His sire, Treasure Valley 'Colt' would be the best headed Suffolk I have ever seen - sire power personified with great style, showing all the indications of a prepotent sire. BYU 21T3 more than lived up to our expectations and bred exceptionally well in our flock. We reintroduced him into this year's AI program, so there will hopefully be ewes in lamb to him. They'd be a great infusion into any flock.

04.01.2022 This is the pedigree of the 3rd USA sire we imported, Mohawk Valley 'John' from New York. A different bloodline from our earlier introductions, strong in Buckeye Acres and RDN (Roger Nicholls) blood - recognised top performing studs in the States at that time. John was used in this year's AI program..
