25.01.2022 Testing at public COVID-19 clinics is free. No Medicare card is required. Get tested even if you have mild symptoms. You must self-isolate until you get your result.

25.01.2022 The Chinese and Nepalese grandparents had a special visitor to yesterdays weekly English class. Labor MP, Chris Minns, Member for Kogarah, visited the Zoom class to let the communities know they can contact him if they have any issues or concerns, especially during these unprecedented times. Chris is no stranger to the St George area, having grown up here. He acknowledged that isolation during the Covid-19 health crisis is especially hard for recently arrived people who are ...still trying to feel connected. He also expressed hope that the economic development of St George will return stronger when the crisis is over and create vital job opportunities. Following this, there was a happy coincidence, when volunteer teachers Subhash and Ajita reminded Chris that he went to school with their son. Chris Minns closing message to the grandparents was Stay Safe! 22.01.2022 Today, via Zoom, ADS staff will hear about World AIDS Day from Nicolas Gonzalez, Health Promotion Officer | HIV & Related Programs (HARP) Unit, SESLHD. Tim, from Positive Life NSW, will also share his story as an Aboriginal man of the Kamilaroi Nation who has lived with HIV since 2000. A former enrolled nurse and community worker, he now advocates for vulnerable groups. Tim says being part of the brotherhood and sisterhood of humankind means we need to look out for each other. ‘We have a personal responsibility to look out for someone - and that can make a big difference to that person’s life.’ This year’s World AIDS Day theme is Global solidarity, shared responsibility. Rocking a red ribbon shows everyone especially people living with HIV and their families your support! #rocktheribbon

19.01.2022 Hi my name is Sharon Yuan and I’m a fourth-year social work student about to finish my placement with Advance Diversity Services (ADS)! During my time here at ADS, I have learnt so much about culture, diversity and the extraordinary work ADS does with CALD communities. As a soon to be social work graduate, I am passionate about social justice, inclusivity and working with women and children. Through this placement, I have been blessed with so many different opportunities to d...evelop my skills and build my network. At ADS, I have been working closely with the Settlement team under the Specialised and Intensive Services (SIS) and the Settlement Engagement and Transition Support (SETS). Through the SIS program, I have learnt about the barriers and challenges refugees face from their journey to their settlement in Australia. Coming into placement during Covid, has brought on many unprecedented challenges in the way we work with people and communities. I have been providing support to our Community Officers in the SETS program to co-facilitate online Zoom sessions with their community reference groups and provide any technical assistance. Because of Covid, I have had to quickly learn and adapt to reimagining different ways of communicating and engaging with communities. I have also been leading the Emergency Relief (ER) Program and have witnessed the direct impacts of Covid on families and how this has led to increased complexity and need of support for those affected. I have felt so welcomed by the ADS team since day one and have had such great experiences being a part of this team that I will be staying on as a volunteer after my placement ends. It is celebrated on September 23 every year. On this day, LGBTIQ+ organisations conduct education programs and also hold public outreach, workshops, conferences and lobbying events where they inform the public, local government and representatives about the rights of and issues facing bisexual people.

18.01.2022 Rishi Acharya, our Nepalese Community officer, received a surprise award as "NSW Volunteer of the Year" from "The Centre for Volunteering", after being nominated for South Sydney. Rishi has been working with the Nepalese community for a decade and has made major contributions to the communitys sense of belonging and safety in the Australian context, including through community based journalism and media work. Since Covid Rishi has been both proactive and responsive to the nu...merous needs of his community - sharing all the updates on Covid to stay safe, helping hundreds of stranded Nepalese return to Nepal on repatriation flights, booking the essential Covid tests for them beforehand, and ensuring those financially impacted by Covid are assisted with emergency relief. And behind the scenes he has maintained a long standing support group for Nepalese families with disabilities to access NDIS. It is no wonder he received this well deserved award. Congratulations Rishi and thanks for your ongoing passion for volunteering and community cohesion. 12.01.2022 In 2020, World Teachers Day celebrates teachers with the theme Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future. The day helps us to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, take stock of achievements, and draw attention to the voices of teachers, who are at the heart of efforts to attain the global education target of leaving no one behind. The COVID-19 pandemic has also significantly added to the challenges faced by already over-extended education systems and teachers throughout the world. Internationally, World Teachers Day is held on October 5 but, as this is usually during the school holidays in Australia, we celebrate teachers on the last Friday in October (October 30, this year). Lets use the day as a wonderful opportunity to thank teachers for the important role they play in the learning journey of students!

02.01.2022 Shaping Peace Together is the 2020 theme for International Day of Peace (IDP) observed around the world on September 21. It is relevant, given how COVID-19 has thrown our world into turmoil and forcibly reminded us that what happens in one part of the planet can impact people everywhere. The UN General Assembly has declared IDP as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. It also calls us to recognise the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote harmony and to celebrate the day by spreading compassion, kindness and hope in the face of the pandemic. Please join people around the world as we can shape peace together.
