22.01.2022 INTERMITTENT FASTING At some point in your post-surgery journey you may find that rapid weight loss slows, or may even stall for a short time. Our Bariatric Physician, Dr Daiva, recommends a part-day fasting program known as Intermittent Fasting to help patients get back on track. It involves limiting consumption of food and beverages with calories to an eight-hour window, and abstaining from food for the remaining 16 hours. Some of the benefits of Intermittent Fasting includ...e: Its flexible and the times can be tailored to your lifestyle It can be more sustainable in the long term than traditional diets Rather than focusing on depravation of particular food groups like traditional diets, it encourages you to become more aware of your bodys needs and hunger cues It may help reduce junk food cravings For more information on Intermittent Fasting, call Advanced Surgicare on 1300 551 533 to book a consultation with Dr Daiva, or check out some resources including 16:8 Intermittent Fasting by Jaime Rose Chambers, or the TedX talk on YouTube, Intermittent Fasting: Transformational Technique | Cynthia Thurlow www.advancedobesitysurgery.com.au . . . . . #intermittentfasting #intermittenfasting #168fasting #168diet #fastingdiet #drkuzinkovas #sydneyweightloss #weightlosssydney #weightlosssurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgeon #australianbariatricsurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgery #weightlossaustralia #advancedsurgicare #weightlossjourney #weightlosssurgery #weightlosstransformation #sleevegastrectomy #gastricsleeve #obesitysurgery #bariatricsurgery #wlscommunity #weightlosstransformation #vsgfamily #weightlossmotivation #weightlossjourney #rnycommunity #gastricbypass #bariatriclife #gastricsleevesurgery #bariatric See more

21.01.2022 5 Tips To Eat Healthy on the Go

20.01.2022 Weve all been there when youre exercising and the lactic acid is burning, the sweat is pouring off you and you ask yourself is this really worth it? The answer is yes. A million times yes. Not only does exercise release endorphins, our feel-good brain chemicals, it also helps to reduce pain associated with being overweight. The link between Obesity and pain - particularly knee and back pain - is well established. Carrying excess weight is thought to put extra stra...in on joints, and so losing weight is key to pain management. Exercising regularly is one of the steps you can take to lose weight, build up muscle strength, improve your cardiovascular fitness and FINALLY OVERCOME your pain!! Aim for 30 mins of moderate-intensity physical activity each day, as well as strength training (using weights or resistance bands) on at least 2 days of the week. Examples of moderate-intensity physical activity include: - Brisk walking - Jogging - Swimming - Step-trainer These exercises should increase your heart and breathing rate, and make you sweat a little but you should still be able to hold a normal conversation while doing them! Remember doing any physical activity is better than none. Its important to start gradually and not overdo it. . . . . . #resistancetraining #weightlossexercise #gymtraining #muscularexercise #muscletraining #musclemass #endorphins #burnfat #cardio #painmanagement #weightlossjourney #weightlosssurgery #weightlosstransformation #sleevegastrectomy #gastricsleeve #obesitysurgery #bariatricsurgery #wlscommunity #weightlosstransformation #vsgfamily #weightlossmotivation #weightlossjourney #rnycommunity #gastricbypass #bariatriclife #gastricsleevesurgery #bariatric See more

20.01.2022 VLCD PRE-OPERATIVE / PRE-SURGERY DIET Prior to surgery, patients are required to follow a VLCD (Very Low Calorie Diet) such as Formulite or Optifast for at least 2 weeks to induce rapid weight loss. WHY IS A VLCD SO IMPORTANT? Rapid weight loss prior to bariatric surgery is crucial as it reduces liver size, improving abdominal access for Dr Kuzinkovas and decreasing the risk of complications.... VLCDs enable your body to use its fat stores as energy. It is a safe and nutrionally complete way to replace your normal food intake. HOW DO I FOLLOW A VLCD PRIOR TO SURGERY? Using meal replacement VLCD products (such as shakes, bars or soups) patients need to replace each of their 3 daily meals with a VLCD product. This can be supplemented with up to 2 cups of non-starchy vegetables or salad and plenty of low-calorie fluids. For more information, visit www.advancedobesitysurgery.com.au or call our clinic 1300 551 533 @formulite_australia Formulite offers nutritionally complete VLCD meal replacement shakes, including Gluten free and low lactose options. . . . . . #vlcd #vlcddiet #verylowcaloriediet #formulite #optifast #weightlossdiet #weightlossshake #preopdiet #drkuzinkovas #sydneyweightloss #weightlosssydney #weightlosssurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgeon #australianbariatricsurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgery #weightlossaustralia #weightlossjourney #weightlosssurgery #weightlosstransformation #sleevegastrectomy #gastricsleeve #obesitysurgery #bariatricsurgery #wlscommunity #weightlosstransformation #vsgfamily #weightlossjourney #rnycommunity #gastricbypass #bariatriclife #gastricsleevesurgery #bariatric See more

18.01.2022 Hidden Chemicals and Sugars in Processed Food

17.01.2022 C H E W Y O U R F O O D When you eat, it usually takes at least 20 minutes for your stomach to tell your brain to feel full. Chewing thoroughly, and slowing down your eating can help to prevent overeating. There are so many other benefits to chewing your food well: - can actually burn extra calories - allows your body to absorb more nutrients and energy from food... - reduces food into smaller particles, which reduces stress on your esophagus and helps your stomach to metabolise food - releases more saliva, which contains digestive enzymes to make food easier to digest - promotes mindful eating - heightens taste - good for teeth So remember: 1. Chew slowly, steadily and thoroughly 2. Chew until the food has lost its texture 3. Finish chewing and swallowing completely before taking another bite 4. Wait to drink fluids until you've finished swallowing 1300 551 533 or (02) 9553 0012 www.advancedobesitysurgery.com.au . . . . . #drkuzinkovas #sydneyweightloss #weightlosssydney #weightlosssurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgeon #australianbariatricsurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgery #weightlossaustralia #advancedsurgicare #weightlossjourney #weightlosssurgery #weightlosstransformation #sleevegastrectomy #gastricsleeve #obesitysurgery #bariatricsurgery #wlscommunity #weightlosstransformation #vsgfamily #weightlossmotivation #weightlossjourney #rnycommunity #gastricbypass #bariatriclife #gastricsleevesurgery #bariatric #weightlosstips #weightlossadvice See more

16.01.2022 Here at Advanced Surgicare we regularly have new patients come to us who have had Gastric Band (commonly known as Lap Band) surgery, performed elsewhere in the past. After many years without sufficient monitoring of their Gastric Band, some patients arrive at our clinic with a myriad of problems including band intolerances, reflux or vomiting, loss of restriction, and occasionally more serious symptoms. When patients contact our clinic with these issues, their stomach and Gas...tric Band will generally need to be assessed. Dr Kuzinkovas can then adjust or remove the band as necessary and discuss options for moving forward. There is no need to suffer in silence. 16.01.2022 If youve already had weight loss surgery, then youll know our practitioners talk a lot about the importance of protein in your diet! Protein is a vital part of everybodys health and can be found in both animal and plant products. Some of the benefits of protein include: reduces appetite and hunger increases and preserves muscle mass... boosts metabolism can help suppress cravings helps maintain weight loss After weight loss surgery, your food intake is dramatically reduced, and your protein intake is naturally limited. It is therefore crucial that you know how to include adequate protein in your diet. For more information, visit www.advancedobesitysurgery.com.au and check out our blog in the About Us section! 13.01.2022 In some cases, a Gastric Bypass may be recommended for weight loss surgery, instead of a Gastric Sleeve. A Gastric Bypass could be the best option if you have additional serious health factors related to your weight. A consultation with Dr Kuzinkovas is the best way to determine which surgery is most suitable to your individual needs. A Gastric Bypass is a life changing operation. It involves creating a small pouch from the stomach (about the size of an egg), and connectin...g this new pouch directly to the small intestine. Food therefore bypasses most of your stomach as it moves from the new pouch, directly to the small intestine. A Gastric Bypass helps Obese patients lose weight in three different ways: - restricts amount of food ingested (restrictive component) - alters the gut hormones to help with feelings of satiety and satisfaction (metabolic component) - limits amount of calories and nutrients absorbed (malabsorption component) Call 1300 551 533 or visit www.advancedobesitysurgery.com.au to book a consultation with Dr Kuzinkovas and find out which surgery may suit your weight loss needs! . . . . . #gastricbypass #rouxeny #rny #rnycommunity #rnysurgery #rnytransformation #rnylife #gastricbypasssurgery #drkuzinkovas #sydneyweightloss #obesitysurgery #weightlosssydney #weightlosssurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgeon #australianbariatricsurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgery #weightlossaustralia #advancedsurgicare #weightlossjourney #weightlosssurgery #weightlosstransformation #sleevegastrectomy #gastricsleeve #obesitysurgery #bariatricsurgery #wlscommunity #weightlosstransformation #vsgfamily #weightlossmotivation #weightlossjourney #rnycommunity #gastricbypass #bariatriclife #gastricsleevesurgery #bariatric See more

12.01.2022 As we farewell a challenging year, Dr Kuzinkovas and the Advanced Surgicare team would like to wish everyone a happy and healthier New Year in 2021. It’s the question keeping our phone lines busy over this period - can you drink alcohol after weight loss surgery? Whilst patients must wait at least 4-6 weeks after surgery before consuming alcohol, ideally alcohol should be avoided altogether for at least the first year after surgery. Generally, alcohol consumption can be a...ssociated with a range of health issues, and for bariatric patients there are additional risks to be aware of: Alcohol is absorbed differently after weight loss surgery - you are likely to be more affected by alcohol after surgery as your stomach is smaller and metabolises alcohol very differently. You are likely to become drunk more quickly, for longer, and from far fewer drinks Alcohol can lead to weight regain - most alcohols are basically sugar and carbohydrates with no nutritional value. You are consuming calories with no nutritional return for your body, and the carbs can raise your blood sugar levels, causing weight regain. If you are going to have ONE drink for NYE, you may prefer to chose a dry wine, or a small amount of a spirit mixed with a low calorie mixer (such as soda water). Remember, be mindful and drink safely - or don’t drink at all! HAPPY NEW YEAR! See more

12.01.2022 Have you met our wonderful practice Dietitian, Kerryn? We are so lucky to have Kerryn as a primary source of patient support in our clinic! In addition to her vast wealth of knowledge and understanding of Bariatric nutrition and dietary support, as our patients will tell you, Kerryn is an incredibly warm, understanding and supportive clinician! She sets our patients up for success, and helps them get them back on track if they need any extra assistance post-operatively. When... do you see her? Generally, your first Dietary consult happens before surgery, to prepare you for the pre-op diet and give a run through of the post-op diet phases. Youll have another two Dietary consults in the weeks and months following surgery. We also encourage patients to ask their GPs for an Enhanced Primary Care plan (EPC), which allows you to access up to five additional consultations with Kerryn each year, partially subsidised by Medicare. You can access this service for as long as you need! If you are a past patient looking for some additional diet support, call our clinic on 1300 551 533 for more information on obtaining an EPC plan to see Kerryn. --> Kerryn Chisholm (MSc, Grad Dip Diet) is an accredited practising dietitian with extensive experience in counselling individuals and families in weight management. She has worked with children and adults at several hospitals and private practices including the Childrens Hospital at Westmead for the past 21 years. She is a leading specialist in weight management and obesity with 20 peer reviewed published papers and has presented both nationally and internationally at Obesity conferences. . . . . . . . . . #weightlossdietitian #weightlosssupport #bariatricdietitian #preopdiet #postopdiet #dietphases #weightlossnutrition #sydneyweightloss #weightlosssydney #weightlosssurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgeon #australianbariatricsurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgery #weightlossaustralia #weightlossjourney #weightlosssurgery #weightlosstransformation #sleevegastrectomy #gastricsleeve #obesitysurgery #bariatricsurgery #wlscommunity #weightlosstransformation #vsgfamily #weightlossmotivation #weightlossjourney #rnycommunity #gastricbypass See more

11.01.2022 Tips To Exercise in the Morning If You Arent a Morning Person

11.01.2022 Obesity is one of the risk factors for the insufficient human bodys immune response to fight the Covid-19 virus.

11.01.2022 F I T N E S S F R I D A Y With gyms closed, restrictions on venturing outside, and the challenges of juggling working from home with home schooling, its no surprise our patients are reporting that exercise has been put on the back burner. Weve put together some tips to make exercising at home more manageable, and ensure you can stay on track with your weight loss progress: . Set aside some time in your day. If you allocate the time, youre more likely to commit and pa...rticipate. First thing in the morning is a great time, before your day gets too chaotic. Go for a walk in the afternoon or evening. You could also use quick challenges or 5min workouts to break up your day. . Download an app or jump on YouTube. How great is technology?! There are a huge number of FREE apps (or paid if youre keen) that you can download on your phone to guide you through home workouts. Alternatively, YouTube is also a great source of exercise videos. . Utilise things you have around the house. Need some weights, but dont have any dumbells? Old 3L milk bottles filled with water can be used, or sacks of rice. You could even indoor plants in their pots (remember to use safe lifting techniques!). Chairs, sofas and other furniture items can be incorporated in your workout. . Set up exercise stations around the house - a different activity in each room. . Involve the kids. Most kids love a challenge! Race them to complete 15 Jumping Jacks or Leg Raises. Who can Plank the longest? . Most importantly, KEEP IT FUN! 08.01.2022 C H I A P U D D I N G Patients sometimes struggle for puree-phase recipes that dont look and feel like baby food. We got you covered! Our wonderful Dietitian Kerryn put together this mango and blueberry chia pudding recipe and its been made, tried and tested by Liz on our front desk who reports back with two thumbs up! (Liz is our fussiest eater, so it must be good!) Whilst its perfect for the puree-phase of the post-op diet, this chia pudding can really be eaten as ...a great snack at any stage after surgery. Swipe for the recipe For some other great puree recipes, tips and guides, check your copy of Your Complete Guide to Nutrition for Weight Loss Surgery by Sally Johnston provided in your post-op pack. Chia Seeds Chia is a high protein edible seed, and when prepared the right way can be a great option for a healthy breakfast or snack. Chia is also high in Omega 3 fatty acids, which help fight inflammation. According to Harvards School of Public Health, The Nutrition Source, chia seeds contain several components that, when eaten as part of a balanced plant-rich diet, may prevent the development of various chronic diseases. Two tablespoons of chia seeds contain about 140 calories, 4 grams of protein, 11 grams of fibre, 7 grams of unsaturated fat, 18% RDA for calcium (US guidelines), and trace minerals including zinc and copper. They are the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acids. Chia seeds are a complete protein, containing all nine essential amino acids that cannot be made by the body. 08.01.2022 Have you wondered what a Gastric Sleeve, also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery, or Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, looks like? A Gastric Sleeve is type of bariatric surgery that involves both a restrictive and metabolic approach to weight loss. Patients can expect to lose between 55% and 85% of their excess weight in the first 12-18 months. Excess weight loss of 100% is not uncommon in patients who eat healthily and do intensive exercise! By making your stomach smaller, the a...mount of food that a person can consume is limited. In this surgery, approximately 70-80% of the stomach is removed, leaving it as a narrow, banana shaped tube (sleeve). Additionally, after a sleeve gastrectomy, the stomach produces less of the hunger hormone, Ghrelin, so patients experience a substantial reduction in the hunger sensation between meals. Dr Kuzinkovas performs a Sleeve Gastrectomy laparoscopically, commonly known as keyhole surgery. This surgery is permanent, irreversible, and is designed for patients who are committed to losing excess weight and maintaining their healthy body weight for years to come. As with all major surgery, this procedure has some risks. You should discuss these with a qualified medical professional. The amount of weight a patient is able to lose and keep off after surgery will depend on the lifestyle changes they make, including exercise and healthy eating . It is important to know that this procedure will not stop you craving certain foods, or from choosing unhealthy options, therefore a focus on your journey and self-discipline are of a paramount importance. Only an expert in this field such as bariatric surgeon, Dr Kuzinkovas, can properly establish if you are a suitable candidate for a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy. Call us on 1300 551 533 today to book a consultation and discuss your suitability for a Sleeve Gastrectomy. Your new tomorrow starts today! . . . . . #drkuzinkovas #sydneyweightloss #weightlosssydney #weightlosssurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgeon #australianbariatricsurgeon #sydneybariatricsurgery #weightlossaustralia #advancedsurgicare

08.01.2022 Avoiding the Snack Traps Theres no question that practising self-isolation and/or working from home is associated with increased snacking. Some of the reasons include - increased availability (more food to hand at home than in the workplace); decreased accountability (no guilt leaving your desk to snack, and no co-workers watching your every move!); as well as increased stress factors; and perhaps a degree of procrastination!... The snacks youre reaching for are likely to be low in protein, highly-processed, and carbohydrate-based. Not ideal for sustained weight loss! Weve got some practical, and achievable, tips below to help you through this period of isolation and keep you on track on your weight loss journey. One of the easiest ways to avoid snacking on highly-processed or carb-heavy foods is to stop them entering your home! - Eat before you shop. Youve probably heard it before - food shopping when hungry makes you buy more! - Write a list of snack ideas and foods that you will actually eat! (Theres no point buying celery sticks with the best of intentions when you have no intention of eating them!) - Avoid the snack aisles. Try sticking to the first few aisles at the supermarket! Its usually where you will find all your FRESH food and proteins. If you need an item in the other aisles, leave your trolley at the end of the aisle and grab what you need by hand- if you have to carry it, youll be less likely to throw random snacks in your trolley! Make a list each day youre at home of the snacks you can have - or set them aside. It will help with accountability and your ability to monitor what youre actually eating. Dont mistake boredom (or procrastination!) for hunger. Weve all been there - feeling vaguely bored or avoiding a task and next second finding yourself in the kitchen staring blankly into the pantry! Next time you find yourself in this scenario, pour yourself a glass of water, crunch on an ice cube, or even stop and do 5 star jumps or push-ups to help reset your brain! . . . . . #stopsnacking #weightlosssnacks #snacktrap #snacktips #weightlosstips #weightlossadvice #quarantine #quarantinetips #tipsforisolation #quarantine

05.01.2022 Research shows that being obese doubles the risk of needing hospital treatment for coronavirus.

05.01.2022 No matter how hard you try to avoid it, chocolate is EVERYWHERE! This time of year can be particularly triggering for Bariatric patients. If you can resist the temptation, then well done!! But if you cant resist a nibble, then dont beat yourself up. Here are some tips to help navigate Easter: Know your habits before Easter arrives, have a think about when you are most likely to overindulge. Try to anticipate your moments of weakness, and brainstorm some strategies to pre...pare yourself for those times. Moderation be mindful of how much you are consuming. Its about sensible portions, keeping track of your consumption and padding out the cravings with other items. Pair your chocolate treat with a cup of water or mug of tea, and take a sip with each bite. Slow down and savour each bite! (Itll last longer too!). Quality over quantity aside from the nasty additives in cheap chocolate, you are more likely to enjoy the flavours and texture of a good quality chocolate and it is more likely to satisfy your cravings. Have your food and eat it too dont skip meals. Missing a meal will make you more likely to binge on a quick sugar hit. It will also play havoc with your blood sugars. Make sure you are eating well over Easter, and keep up your protein intake. Go dark and dont look back youve probably heard the benefits of dark chocolate before, and lets be clear dark chocolate is still chocolate however, its probably the better choice. Dark chocolate usually contains at least 70% cocoa, compared to only 10-20% in milk chocolate, and generally has less sugar and fat, as well as the benefit of some antioxidants. Choose Wisely and Happy Easter! . Beware of Dumping Syndrome - one of the possible side-effects after weight loss surgery. Dumping syndrome occurs when a large amount of food (especially sugary, high-fat and dairy) passes too quickly from the stomach into the small intestines, without being digested. This causes a release of hormones that affect heart rate, blood pressure and a range of symptoms that can be very uncomfortable. See more
